Our initial estimate was just under 5:30, and in progress we managed to get the time even lower.

Comments

For the BLJ into BitDW, we used the JRB stairs instead of the BoB stairs, because we discovered a new technique that can bounce off walls from backwards momentum, and if you press A and B together on one frame, you jump kick backwards in a certain direction.
In BitDW, instead of waiting for the elevator we land on at first to get to the top, we just ran to the very edge and BLJed off right away, and then BLJed on an earlier elevator, saving a lot of time. In the movement, we used a new strategy, utilizing the new technique to bounce off the wall. We didn't have to jump kick this time, because when you fall off an edge after bouncing, you gain control again. We then dove like normal onto the next platform, and then dove on the pyramid shaped platform, but not to roll; we slid along the edge until we got close to the wall and jumped to cancel the speed very close to the wall. This saves some time as well. We then finished with the slope jump dives, followed by a new strat for getting to the pipe.
In BitFS, BLJing is way faster. This allowed us to save quite a number of frames. It resulted in worse positions for all moving things at the third tier, but we still got through it quickly enough.
At the end of BitS, we used a different way to get past the elevators, and a different strat before the pipe. The slope jump dives are also improved.
The final Bowser battle is also improved, due to optimisation and a different third throw.

Frame improvements

  • BLJ to BitDW: 10
  • BitDW: 62
  • BitFS: 59
  • BitS: 13
  • Final Bowser battle: 12

Thanks to:

  • bobmario511, for telling us that BLJing in BitFS is definitely faster.
  • rikku and mr_roberts_z - their m64 helped us improve the final Bowser battle.

mmbossman: Accepting as an improvement to the published movie. The current submission file truncates the ending of the movie, resulting in a pause screen. This movie file seems to fix the problem, and should be used for encoding purposes.
Johannes: The submission file does not truncate the ending of the movie. It's a bug in Mupen 64, which causes garbage input when M64 playback ends. I worked around the bug by jumping into the star, which hits the star earlier, making the garbage input happen too late to make a difference.

Is watching an encode "not allowed" to judge it?

I'll offer a beer to the first one who goes below 5:00 minutes. Seriously.
If you could find a way to open the door in the moat, (which isn't possible) then you could break 5 mins.

An encoder needs a fully functioning .m64 to correctly encode the movie, along with the need for a correctly functioning .m64 for publication purposes (i.e. the movie file linked to on the publication page). We all know the quality of the run is good, which is why I'm just going to let zOMG and SilentSlayers find a workaround, instead of outright rejecting the submission due to the file not completing the game.

Well, I downloaded the fixed .m64 some days ago and it ran and encoded perfectly fine for me. I don't know what causes this utter strangeness, but in my eyes some people just seem to have this problem, some (like me, obviously as of the encoding) don't. Maybe I didn't run into this because I watched/encoded the run under Linux and that the Windows build has some changed code to trigger this?

I'm not sure. I just downloaded the zipped file linked to from the submission, and played it with the same Mupen I've used for every other Mario 64 submission prior to this. If there is some fixed movie file that hasn't been updated on the submission page that I'm not aware of, please link it to me so that I can take another look.

I avoided the pause caused by the input termination bug by replacing the ZA with an A, making Mario hit the star earlier. http://www.box.net/shared/mpyrglgdsg
If this still doesn't fix it, check your PM box.

That file works fine, I'll set this to accepted with a link to that for whoever formally encodes this for publication.

Holy crap this is awesome! I love the route through Bowser 2 and Bowser 3. Getting Mario into the lava without getting hurt in Bowser 2 was a cool surprise. I enjoyed every second of this. This is the best SM64 any% run yet.

Wow, that run was awesome, especially BitFS. Great job, I really don't see any way of possibly improving the run. Give yourselves a pat on the back.

Looks like this is almost fully optimised, some BLJs I wonder about though. 1.Someone had found that you can BLJ off the side of the ramp at 2:49-2:50. 2.BLJ off the rotating platforms at 4:33, though the height difference between the peak of elevation and the next floor is a bit high. 3.BLJ off the rotating platforms at 4:46 to the tube.

Just asking for a change in the image because sm64 0 stars (and maybe similar to the 1 and 16) have relatively the same "item" being used in the screenshot (that rotating thingy). My random 3 from this tas rather than this: Note: I'm just asking if these should be updated to other things to tas runs with the same game.

I recommend you double-check the date of this run.

Ugh, when are you gonna star thinking about how to do it without keys? (ive already been explained that its not possible, but think, guys. You're TASers. You will find a way, and I'm 0-star-ed out on watching the 0-star runs. -.- )

This run is ancient. Like, from 2000 BC.

This is impressive, but I gave it a no vote because I'm tired of all the one star runs. Sorry. Super Mario 64 TAS'es just need something more, y'know, new. Edit: I just noticed someone say this run is ancient. My point is blunt now *facepalm* -.-'

Yeah, but i still wanted to vote just to get my opinion in, y'know? Not trying to force it on anyone, but I just GOTTA vote for some of these movies, even if it's already published. I'm not a lurker, I just like to press buttons :P that, and I like to see how many people voted which option.
