Released as part of the mostly Game Boy Mickey Mouse series, Mickey Mouse III: Dream Balloon was released in September 1992 by Kemco in Japan for the Famicom. Due to copyright issues it was changed into Kid Clown in Night Mayor World for its US NES 1993 release. It was released in the final days of the NES and it is a short but good platform game.

Movie features

  • Emulator used: FCE Ultra v0.98.16 (it'll desync with any other version)
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Contains entertainment trade offs
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Uses Left+Right

About the run

This TAS beats the previous movie by 26 seconds or 1576 frames to be exact.
In this run I don't avoid bonus levels by collecting strawberries. This change allowed me to make a much more entertaining movie than the previous one, because I jump a lot less than Dark Fulgore, and jumping is what makes Mickey go really slow for a few seconds. Those frequent speed changes were very annoying in the previous movie, so I decided to lose a few seconds by going into bonus levels, in exchange for better platform stages.
Nevertheless, my movie is faster because I also made other small changes:
  • I stand in the middle when bosses die
  • I jump less
  • I found a bug (press Left+Right in air and then press B) which allowed me to go faster on vertical stages.
  • Many optimizations here and there, better routes, etc.

About the rom

If you have a GoodMerged set, you'll find this rom inside the Kid Klown set. I decided to use the Japanese version because the American has worse enemies, story, difficulty, etc. There is an English version (Mickey Mouse Dream Balloon (U) (Prototype)), but it was dumped when I already was near the end of my run, and I'm not sure if prototype versions are accepted here.

Thanks

Dark Fulgore for his great first movie. Most of my routes were borrowed from his run, and most of the time it was really hard to even achieve his same times, so it had me really challenged and that was a big motivation for me.

Truncated: As stated before (topic of previous submission) this is a decent choice of game. Much better flow than the previous run, and positive feedback. Accepting.

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.

I have paid attention to this run for long time. And now I will vote Yes. I think the game is funny and I enjoy this run.It let me come back to my childhood. On the other hand,This TAS beats the previous movie by 26 seconds, althouge the previous movie is cancelled. PS:First I opened this run in FCEU0.98.15,and I failed:Mickey Mouse always wanted to die.It can only be replayed in FCEU0.98.16.

Yeah, seriously... I know what you mean... They went from this: To this: ... By the way, I forgot to thank Dark Fulgore for his run, so I edited my original submission.
You're just fucking stupid, everyone hates you, sorry to tell you the truth. no one likes you, you're someone pretentious and TASes only to be on speed game, but don't have any hope, you won't get there.

I like this movie because of the selection of the rom.It may be more enjoyable than the rom released in USA. The speed is fast. Yes vote.
Do the work.

what I didn't like about the previous submission was its jerkiness of fast to slow movements and it generally didn't come across as optimized as a result. This movie manages to minimize that more. I'll give it a weak yes.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

I give this a solid yes vote. It was very fun to watch, and well played. I loved how it played the "Mickey Mouse Club" theme at the beginning, and I so want an Mp3 of that version of "Small World" that played during the credits. When I first saw the Mickey Sprite, I went "awww...." He's got a major over does of cute in this game, and I don't even really like Mickey Mouse all that much. (Well, mainly just his recent crummy cartoons) I don't think I even want to SEE that U.S localization of the game. How could they replace that cute sprite? Though was it just me?, or was the end boss kinda scary for a Mickey Mouse game?

Yes vote. This game is a total farkin rip off of mega man 2. The frog jumps even make the same sound... Awesome autoscroller level.

TAS was submitted almost 10 years ago. You might as well check yourself.

If anyone is curious, this run is not very optimized. There are two main issues: 1) Picking up strawberries only saves a few frames, but costs about 5 seconds per stage for the bonus scene (Total savings: ~30 seconds) 2) The original runner didn't optimize lag frames very well. A good example is how the runner attacks the first boss with balloons while it's invuln. This game is very poorly programmed. Most of the time it runs at around 45 FPS. But with as few as 2-3 sprites on screen, including your own projectiles, it'll drop to 40 FPS, or even 30 FPS. As such, by redoing the stages while paying careful attention to lag management, you can cut seconds off each level while still avoiding the bonus stage. I did a test run of the first two levels, and finished in a total time around 2:01. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxwC37qf9g8 The current run reaches the level select screen at 2:14. The 13 seconds of savings is about ~10 seconds for skipping the bonus stages, and 3 seconds for optimizing lag. I estimate the true optimal time for this game is probably 12:10. I would suggest anyone considering this game check Kid Klown in Night Mayor World to see how it handles lag. Given that KKiNMW came out later, there is a good chance it's better optimized. The bosses are also more interesting, featuring new attacks (e.g. the owl boss now has projecile attacks, likely indicating that the game engine was optimized to not suffer the same lag issue).
