After 13 straight hours of brawl, I have concluded that it is everything I hoped it would be. The only real disappointment is seeing marth still in the game!

I'm bored of brawl already. It was, in my opinion, a letdown.

TEM: Yeah, I know. I wasn't counting on him being in anyway. He seemed to be more of a gag character in Melee. As such, I might pick up ROB for the same reason I played Pichu: I loved the looks I got. Nothing quite beats the reaction of going into an informal tournament signed up as him. "You're playing PICHU?!" ROB seems to be in the same standing. Although I might go with Lucario. He looks pretty cool to play as. And to qualify my statement about Lucario, compare: Ferret is from the manga Peach Fuzz.

I'm still glad I imported a Wii. Mwahahahaha. My copy should be arriving in about three million years due to the "awesome" postal service here. But it'll still arrive before the PAL version comes out. Yay.

Marth > Roy. I used to use Marth whenever someone would start bitching about me using Link.
Kirby said so, so it must be true. ( >'.')>

After having played it for a few hours, I agree, the game is really good. Ness and Kirby were improved to still-not-as-good-as-in-the-first-game-but-now-playable, Lucas is awesome, Luigi is even better, King Dedede is the best heavy character ever, Metaknight is really fun (but Pit not so much), Ike is much better than Marth or Roy ever were, etc. Bad things: Some of the stages have significant load times (on the order of 15-20 seconds, but most load instantly), some characters' Final Smashes are worthless while others instantly win the match (I want them all to be about as good as Metaknight's..), a lot of the new items/levels make matches really swingy (but there's more control over the rules so tournament play is not only possible but explicitly allowed for), and Sonic's special moves are all really horrible (but he's still good because his normals rock). Haven't unocked many people yet though.

The games aren't comparable anyway. Brawl is indeed funny, but competitive playing sucks! (It's not as cool as it is with Melee)

Thank you, 24-hour Wal-Mart Supercenter for selling Brawl to me at midnight (along with about 15 other customers in a sleepy college town). Lucas plays better than Ness, I'm liking Ike almost as much as Marth, Kirby is more useful than he was in Melee, and Pit is a welcome addition. With the neighbors that I have in this complex, I'll probably unlock the majority of the roster in vs matches alone. I'm not a goofy FOX ONLY, NO ITEMS, FINAL DESTINATION sort of player, so I appreciate all that's gone into this game in particular. Melee will continue to hold a special place in my heart, but I dig what they've done here. I'm also happy that Hyrule Castle is back, though I think I'm probably the only one who is.

Ganondorf seems to have given what little use he had over to Kirby. Ganondorf now has no redeeming qualities, but Kirby is doing a lot better these days. And now that I've played them both back to back, I do actually prefer Ike over Marth at the moment, but Marth's up+special is still wonderful to use on unwary opponents, and I'm sure he'll continue to be a solid backup. Revision: a tournament-level player friend of mine informs me that Ganondorf's usefulness has been shifted around, so you can't play him like you used to, but you can still make him play just as evil as he was in Melee (with the same caveats). His range is still greatly reduced, and he's still pathetically slow, so I won't be using him, anyway.

Yeah, they need to make sure there's no evil words like "spastic" or anything. God forbid they end up putting in something potentially minorly offensive and have to recall it...

Since I just played this, I'll post impressions here. Overall, the experience was a good one. 'Tis a blast to play as virtually anyone, stages are mostly good, and the voice acting isn't as lousy when you're actually playing the darn thing instead of listening to low quality Youtube videos. Two problems I had, though. First was the controller. I was playing with the Wiimote + Chuck, and I had the darnedest time trying to get used to it. The sudden removal of some buttons and assignment to very awkwardly placed buttons ended up making my Melee/64 oriented brain do some interesting gymnastics as I tried to jump using the joystick, throw with two buttons, and use B as a trigger. Many times I ended up pressing Up + A trying to recover. Hopefully time (or a Wavebird) will remedy this. This continues to reinforce my opinion of the Wii controller: If it works and responds, it's fantastic. If it falls short of that, or it feels unnecessarily tacked on, forget it. My second problem is Norfair. I actually enjoyed the rising acid/lava Metroid levels from the past two games, but Norfair? Sorry, but that's just overkill. Also, this isn't a complaint as much as it is a nitpick, but in a way, this game feels out of place on the Wii. Yes, I can understand Sakurai's reluctance to make the game's control scheme rely heavily on the motion sensing, IR receiving nature of the controller, but there are at least eight places it would have been welcome: 1. Menus 2. Snake's final smash 3. Menus 4. The Dragoon 5. Menus 6. Character and stage selection screens 7. Menus 8. Menus Also, it would have been handy in the menus, but that's just a small thing. No biggie. Less than pleasant about the whole thing was the situation involved in playing it. My roommate has the Wii, and he said i could go ahead and play it, which I did. I was playing against random, level 3 opponents on random levels so I could get used to things. After a while, he came in and asked me how it was. I said, "I'm having a hard time getting used to it." "What are you having a hard time with?" "The controller." There was brief silence, broken with, "So you're saying you hate the game?" He said this with some irritation in his voice. Obviously I offended him somehow. "No, I'm saying I hate the controller." Which at that point I did. And probably still do. "What are you having trouble with?" "This setup just feels disjointed." "Like how do you mean?" More irritation. Can't a guy have an opinion about a controller? "Well, for example, I'm still trying to get used to using two buttons to throw." "What are you doing to throw?" He actually had me demonstrate to him what I was doing. Okay... "You know you can just use the D-pad to throw, right?" "Really? Thank you." I honestly did not know this tidbit. Tried it briefly, but that D-pad really stinks for that. Soon after this, a bat appears. I rush in to grab it and use it. "Throw the bat." I didn't see any purpose to doing so, so I kept using it. "Throw the bat." I just kept playing. "Dude, throw the bat!" His continuing irritation was really getting to me now, but I responded as calmly as I could. "I don't want to throw the bat." "Dude, I just wanna make sure you know how to throw the bat!" More irritation. Whoa, whoa, whoa, I thought to myself, what? You want to make sure that I know how to throw the bat? What the heck, man?! Who do you think you are, my Smash coach? Just let me freakin' play the freakin' thing, for Pete's sake! Not everyone is going to respond favorably to your favorite control setup! No need to be offended by any of this! Our conversation repeated as follows for about a minute before he gave up: "I just want to make sure you know how to throw the bat!" "I don't want to throw the bat!" Eventually I lost the bat, continued without it, and won the match. It was Falcon vs Luigi on New Pork City. So, in the future, I just might head over to Gamestop to get me a Wavebird so I can play the game decently. And I'll make sure he isn't the only human I'm playing against. Goodness, that was annoying. >_< Edit: To be fair, he probably thought I was being an intolerable jerk as well. Perhaps better communication will clear this up.

9. Shooting the credits The menus could have used them, but it's understandable that they were not made into a gameplay mechanic since it might create an unfair advantage to those playing with a GCN controller. I absolutely love the game so far, but here are some nitpicks I have: 1) The pace is a lot slower than Melee. Probably just takes some getting used to. 2) Controls seem a little unresponsive compared to Melee. Again, probably just takes some getting used to. 3) Item limitations. Only 3 Poke-balls on the screen at once? Only one assist trophy? 4) Lag!! Why lag, in a Wii game, when Melee had none? Try using Pikachu's down-smash on someone. The game will freeze several times during the attack sequence. The game also tends to freeze on the Ice Climber level when the iceberg is sliding down the hill. 5) Something's wrong with the randomness. Try going into Training mode and summoning a bunch of Poke-balls at once. Throw them all. most of the time, they'll all be the same Pokemon. The same with assist trophies: I once got Excitebikes six times in a row. Could this have something to do with a new seeding technique used in online play? 6) Smash balls aren't as rare as they should be, especially when items are on High. One appears at least every 60 seconds. You pretty much have to turn them off if you're playing with somebody less skilled than you.

And here I thought Mormons were super mature, and have great personal interaction skills. While you both sound silly from that description, you definitely should have thrown the bat. You know, to see if you were doing it right.

Complaints: after playing the game more, I have mostly everything unlockable unlocked (mostly) and I can no longer stand to play with assist trophies turned on. Why? there are 2 in particular that really burn my ass: Nintendogs, and this other one that looks like Mr. Potato head. They both block a large portion of the screen for a fair amount of time, and all it seems to do is piss me off. There are a few maps I really cant stand either. I like the ones that move around a bit, it makes the game more varied. But there are a few maps that have really, busy backgrounds that tend to distract from actually playing the game. New pork city mostly, but a few others are guilty of this. And also on the controller: just use the gamecube ones. I tried the wiimote+chuck, but in the end that game is just at home on a more conventional controller.
