I agree with this. I think anything directly derived from whatever statistics is just that, and really undiscussable. Who had the most TASes this year? Who had the highest rated TAS total using formula X? Etc..
Here is a list of TASes of 2007, sorted by author.
So I will now write the ideas I had for more "discussable" categories, to try and get the ball rolling. I'm hoping that others come up with more or better categories/nominees than I have so far.

Ideally, after some discussion (and after 2007 is over), the desired categories could be made into individual threads with a poll, and then voting could be opened for a period of time.
None of these categories or nominees are final - I'll add any nominee or category ideas here. I'm not too worried about a minimum or maximum number of nominees or categories, so fire away!
Please comment about any aspect of this. I am trying hard to make it something many people will enjoy participating in, rather than just something I like, but I may be doing things wrong. If so, please let me know!
Hopefully this turns out to be fun :)

I would nominate nitsujas Sonic 3 % Knuckles run to Glitchy TASes of 2007. I would also like to see these categories: Best TASer of 2007, Best rookie of 2007 and maybe best runs for each console.
Edit: Alden suggested that we should call this The Tazzie Awards :)

One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn't the same....
Seriously, to be grouped in with those runs is a total honor. Thanks for just making my night JXQ!
For overall TASes, I think the winner from each catergory could be nominated. Overall TASers should be nominated separately because there are some big ones who don't necessarily shine on a single system.
Also, for the system dependant nominees, could you list their runs on that system. It would make it easier to decide.

JXQ, your list is beginning to look better and better my man :) By the way, when do you want/think the voting to get started? Before 2008 or after? Maybe its better to do this like in january or february. Also, maybe a final category could be Best TAS of 2007. I was thinking this category would show up after when the voters have voted on which run on each system they considered to be the best and then put the winners on each system in a final poll for the Best TAS of 2007 (Im sorry if that did not make sense, Im so tired these days ^_^). What do you think?
Edit: I am really looking forward to see who wins the best rookie award because all of them are really good! :)
Edit 2: May I suggest adding Fractalfusion, Arne The Great, Samhain-Grim, Parrot14green and yourself for the SNES TASers of 2007.
-''- Rikku to the N64 TASers of 2007.
-''- Nitsuja to the Genesis TASers of 2007.
-''- Phil to the NES TASers of 2007 (his involvement in the zelda and castlevania run made me think of him).
About Overall TASers of 2007, maybe we can do the same as I suggested earlier for Best TAS of 2007? Also, I can offer sticky the voting thread if its needed.
arkiandruski, I think listing the runs is a good idea, but maybe not on this post..? You can see a list by-author here. I think when the actual voting threads are made, this information should be copied into that initial post for all author categories. I'll add this author-list link to the first post as well.
Angerfist, I'll add those nominations, thanks. I didn't have many ideas for SNES TASer because no one specifically focused on it as much as other systems. hero had the most SNES runs, with 3.
I think voting could start a few days after 2007 ends. I also agree that "overall TAS" could be a "second round" vote that is based on the system-winners of the first round. However, I think arkiandruski made a good point about doing a similar thing for "overall TASer", but I would be okay with either method. Either way, I think the vote for that should be later than the other categories (at the same time as "overall TAS of the year").
Hopefully we're not dominating the discussion here (it's easy to do that when trying to get things started). The other possibility is that a small group is selecting well the view of many. Hopefully that is the case. Or maybe a lot of people haven't seen this thread yet :)

I nominate Myself, as being the the lazyest TAS'er of 2007. since I have been working on the same room on rockman 3 for like 6 months.
anyway, Best TAS'er of 2007, my vote goes to Adelikat, who added many many tases this year.
Best glitch discovery would make a good catagory since its not the same as glitchest TAS. I think getting past the 30 star door in SM64 would strongly rival your claim.
Does "Best glitch" mean the coolest looking glitch, or the coolest concept?
Looking at the currently listed glitches, I think it's more about the concept, and about what is skipped than about the looks... In this case I would also nominate the SMW2 glitch, which warps to a level that corresponds to the amount of gathered coins.
(I am wondering though, that BLJ through the 30-star door... was that really something new? It looks like using a glitch that was already known at a place where it wasn't used before.)
Could say the same about the SMB flagpole glitch, it's merely a well placed wall jump
I'm sciencing as fast as I can !

<adelikat> mmmmm yummy penises
I'd like to nominate JXQ as an overall TASer of 2007.
I think we need a couple more TASes to fill out the Genesis catergory. Maybe Dynamite Headdy or Comix Zone.
I also think that Comix Zone might qualify for a glitchy TAS award.
Thank you for the suggestions.
RT-55J, I did not put yours in since you have not watched it :P
But, speaking of RPG-type games, I do not know them well, and so I have no knowledge as to which ones have more luck manipulation than the others. Pokemon? Final Fantasy? Dragon Warrior? If someone is more familiar and has some input, it would be appreciated. Thanks :)
<Swordless> Go hug a tree, you vegetarian (I bet you really are one)
I have watched this, and second the nomination -- every hit in the run is a double, critical, or double critical. Also, no damage is ever sustaned by any character except ones whose death is necessary for enhanced speed.
How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks.
One I'd like to suggest for "Lucky TAS" is...
[766] NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (USA PRG1) by adelikat in 17:50.0 (fcm,avi)
I've had this game, and played it for several years. And guess what? I STILL have not beat it. I was frustrated to see knockouts instantly, and from what I read on the authour's comments, it took a hell of a lot of Luck manipulation, and I'm not surprised either. Considering I've been trying to beat it (on and off) for 2 YEARS!, I wouldn't be surprised at how much work was involved in this. Therefore, I believe this should be a candidate for "Lucky TAS"
For Funny TAS, I suggest...
NES "2-player" Chip 'n Dale - Rescue Rangers (USA) by dragonxyk in 09:29.22 (fcm, avi)
This run cracked me up the whole way through. All of the end of level mini game scenes cracked me up, specifically the one where Chip & Dale throw the boxes at each other and keep catching them, until they finally both get hit by the boxes at the same time. The poses when the screen freezes at the end of a boss were all funny too. Another thing I found hilarious was how casually dragoxyk killed Chip and Dale, and the way they look so happy when they purposely jump down a pit and kill themselves. Another thing I found funny was how horribly he abused the balloons, often in funny ways, specifically in the level where you have to climb up a long vertical screen, in which dragonxyk killed Chip and Dale several times to save time.
I have a soft spot for RPG TASes, but I am still considering what's most lucky. Only started thinking about it when you brought it up in the other thread. I only want to make one or two suggestions... I'll make 'em soon! Maybe!
But on another note, I would like to nominate Swordless Link as an N64 TASer. You know, great contributions and all.
And I know Super Mario Kart is already in SNES TASes, but I think it should also be in "Innovative". The way the times were gotten was the most amazing part. Very unorthodox strategies were used on every track.
Unless I am misunderstanding that category, then nevermind!

For glitchy TASes I'd like to nominate:
[941] SGB Pokémon Green (JPN v1.0) by Primorial#soup in 04:24.53
This run is very confusing as the Dokashira Door glitch connects areas of the game that should not be connected. The graphics get all screwed up and the end result is just weird.
I'd also like to nominate Emu for Genesis TASer of 2007. He has made three very nice Genesis runs:
[952] Genesis Mickey Mania (USA) by emu in 20:42.37
[921] Genesis Escape From Mars Starring Taz (USA) by emu in 16:17.27
[880] Genesis Dynamite Headdy (USA) by emu in 33:22.82
I also second the nomination of Swordless Link for N64 TASer of the year. His work with Super Mario 64 has been sublime. From what I hear he has also been doing some very nice work with Ocarina of Time :)
EDIT:
For innovative TAS of 2007 I'd like to nominate:
[817] SNES "all items" Super Metroid (JPN/USA) by JXQ in 1:10:45.02
For the new and exciting concept of input animation.
I nominate a sort of "boobie prize" category -- Gruefood of the Year.
My suggestions, which were all rejected for one good reason or another but I still found rather enjoyable:
#1493: Bisqwit's PC Star Control II in 35:03.5
#1533: Weatherton's N64 USA MARIOKART64 in 06:43.23
#1672: P.DOT's N64 The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time in 1:56:04.98
#1598: Baxter's NES The Legend of Zelda: Outlands in 18:54.9
#1572: mr_roberts_z's N64 Super Mario 64 in 1:03:10.8 (ccc-less run)
#1580: BagOfMagicFood, FODA, Randil's GB Super Mario Land 2 in 18:21.73
#1502: skamastaG & thegreginator's SNES Super Mario World "walkathon" in 14:03.7
PS: There's some good ones that aren't mario or zelda related :P like YO NOID! which is the awesomest game ever

I'm not going to bother with nominating anything under the proposed categories right now, but I feel that there should be a unique award for Mukki and his Majora's Mask run (Titled either "Most persevered run" or "Most insane runner" or something similar) mainly because of the sheer amount of patience required for the run, mainly due to mupen and its trademark desyncs :)
Also, I'd nominate the new line of SMB runs (or the one that started it) for least expected improvments award.
I know neither of these awards exist, but I really don't care.
<adelikat> I am annoyed at my irc statements ending up in forums & sigs
Thank you all for more ideas.
One thing I want to avoid is having so many categories that people get sick of casting votes.
I think "most persevered/insane/patient/sexy TASer" is getting into that territory. They are all qualities that us TASers have by definition ;)
I also think "Least expected improvement" is too similar to "Best glitch discovery".
I'm wondering more opinions on "Best unpublished TAS". I see some merit but also see some downsides.
If any of the other decisions are unpopular, please let me know.
