Hi. I tried searching for "Gyruss" in both the forums and the Search page, but there hasn't been any official time attack made by anyone yet. It also doesn't seem to be a serious work in progress by anyone. Are there any plans to make a time attack of this game in the future? After watching the Gradius video, which was one of the best I've seen so far, I feel that maybe Gyruss could look very nice too (from a different perspective than a normal side-scroller).

It is spelled Gyrus... but yeah, there doesn't seem to be any mention. But it being a space shooter, I don't think it's a very good game to TAS. Much like Zanac.

It is definately Gyruss. I had the game, maybe even still do. :3 I might have beaten it once, using a 30 Lives Cheat though. >.> That game is HARD! One of my favorites. I would definately be interested in seeing a TAS. :3

I decided to give this a bump to post a short movie I made of the first "planet": http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1798970337/GyrussTest.fcm The movie stops after the Neptune bonus level. I think this game has enough action to warrent a TAS, but there is one factor that may make a run of this game less entertaining; it seems that a group of enemies will only spawn after the previous group has either been destroyed or flown to the center. Since the first option is much faster, a TAS of this game aiming for speed would have to destroy enemies as quickly as possible, reducing potential for "playaround" entertainment. (You can delay killing enemies for a short time without losing any frames, but they all have to be destroyed by the time the last one flies in.) Note that I do waste time in the bonus level to make it more entertaining. An optimal (speed-wise) version would kill all the enemies as soon as they fly in... but I did want to give an idea of what possibilities there are for entertainment in this game.

Yeah a TAS in this game wil involve precision, efficiency, and luck manipulation in the bonus level to get more super shots. (i think you can get more super shots in the bonus levels!) The game will look VERY EASY whiel being TASed.

Note, the game does loop over and over and goes till about 9,999,990 or so. [Can't recall if all 9's or just that] It took over 6 hours to do it... but a 1 loop tour may illicit SOME interest. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

After watching this TAS (http://tasvideos.org/3758S.html) recently, I realised that there is a tier system for videos, and I was wondering if Gyruss could have a chance of being in the Vault tier. Are there any TAS runners/creators who are fans of this game? It's one of my all-time favourite games and I would just like to see what happens if it's played in theoretically the best way possible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r2OTTddOaY My questions are mainly regarding the mechanics of the "bomb" attack. It's been a long time since I've played Gyruss, so I can't remember all the rules regarding the bomb attack. 1. Is the bomb attack able to destroy the "pod" bosses' pods even when the pods are closed (which makes them immune to normal attacks)? If yes, then more time could have been saved in this speedrun by using 1 bomb to take out 2 pods (for the later pod bosses with more/adjacent pods) as long as there is sufficient bomb ammo. 2. Is it also possible to destroy all 3 spaceship bosses (Stage 27 at 17:20 in the video) with 1 bomb? 3. Also, I noticed that even when playing near-perfectly, the player only accumulated so little bomb ammo in total. Is there a way to manipulate more bomb powerups spawning (at the cost of some time) in order to acquire more bomb charges to kill some of the later (more difficult) bosses more quickly (thereby saving time overall)?

There is up to one supershot powerup per stage. some do not have any, though (they will either give a smart bomb, or just a third spinny thing). Note that collecting the double shot does not prevent you from collecting the supershot powerup if you stall. So on stage 1 you can collect both the double shot and a supershot if you stall enough (but it may lose too much time). but on stages where none are collected, IF a supershot powerup is available on the stage, a small stall to get it may be worthwhile. you can get also supershot powerups by manipulating one during the bonus stage. but only the first one collected counts. this was proven in the existing video. also, if you die with no supershots, you will be given one on your next life. This may be of use during a boss fight if you run out of super shots. it is never possibly any use otherwise, because you will have manipulated one out of the chance stage. super shots take a long time to fire, so i believe they are only worthwhile when used on stuff that becomes invulnerable to normal shots but not to them. (like turrets) I could be wrong, though. You can have four by the time of the first turret boss if you delay enough on all three levels. this lets you use one on each turret. but it may be faster to not stall on level 1, and take out one with normal shots, taking turns between supershots. you should easily get back to four without much delay for second turret boss. again you can use four, but also test using only three to see if it's faster. I'm pretty sure it's possible to get at least four by each turret boss. i also believe that it may help to use some on the final boss and tag it just before the eye closes. I'm positive that TAS can be improved, and that super shots are the key. You can NOT destroy all three spaceships with one super shot, in my experience. At most one will explode, and they are near enough to you that normal shots are faster overall i think. but this sort of stuff needs to be tested. super shots should be tested against bosses to see when they save time.

Hello, I'm new to TAS but have been using RetroArch for over a year on PSP and Vita. I used to play Gyrus on original NES and I still have my original NES and Gyruss cartridge that still work :) I used to [probably sometime in the 90's or early 2000's] be able to consistently beat the game with no lives lost and all waves of targets, bosses and bonus targets %100 and then I would play the game through a second time which got a bit harder and the patterns changed so it can be a long gametime to do that. There were no save states back then. I guess I was pretty good at Gyruss at the time so I have been relearning the level by level strategies and hope to get good enough to do a run of the game with %100 again. It is doable. The game is fair but is is unforgiving if you are slightly off position in some of the hectic levels. That makes it more fun :) I was surprised to not see any TAS of the game so I am going to start on it. I tinkered with FCUEX and I am getting used to it. I am also going to post YU-T()be videos on how to approach each level, probably in 10 videos in groups of 'levels per planet'. I will post the links here when I get that figured out. If I should be using a different program than FCUEX for TAS please let me know. I'm not up on all the technical standards/etiquette to follow here so any advice is appreciated. Try the game out and see if you enjoy it as much as I do. FYI I'm in my late 50's and still love the classics games. I used to beat Golgo13 and played through Batman on NES [still have the cart] and I beat it a couple of times. I don't enjoy the point and shoots of today and I tend to talk too much as you can tell! :) Enjoy the day RiddleMeThis

Hi! FCEUX is a fine emulator to use. BizHawk is a bit more up-to-date with its NESHawk core, but in my personal experience, NESHawk runs a bit slow. If you're using FCEUX, I would recommend checking out the TAS Editor tool within FCEUX. It allows you to see all your inputs and generally makes it easier to organize and alter your inputs. Also, a thread about Gyruss already exists, and generally we use one thread for each game. A forum mod will probably merge the thread shortly, so you don't need to worry about that.

Hi everyone! I'm glad to see all the comments and that there is 'some' interest in doing a TAS of the game. I love the game and others mayor may not but I am working on it. It takes a while going frame by frame. I have the first 3 levels and 1st boss done. I found many ways to be more efficient at the run than my human strategy can safely do to get through the levels without getting taken out :) All the questions will be discovered as I go though it. I think it's a gem of a game. It's 35 years old and still holds up IMO. I'll be around :)

Hi all, So I did a TAS of Gyruss and it took me about 20 hours since I was learning how to use the software and that run took about 35minutes. I found lots of areas to be more efficient so I am going through it from scratch with more focus on being as frame perfect as possible. I don't think posting the original run is worth it as it's not up to the level it should be. I found some interesting things such when you shoot a target you have to wait 8,11 or 12 frames before it will allow you to shoot again. There is some pattern to that depending on how many sprites are on the screen it would seem. The frames in the TAS Editor are still green but nothing happens when I tell it to fire the B button so that can make it so you cannot do a perfect segment as you have to abandon a target to get a different one then come back to the first one. Also one of the bosses will avoid you to the right but if you fire one frame before or after it will avoid to the left. That made me chase it around for about 2 additional seconds before I could engage it again. So there seems to be a minimum time you must play the level to beat it and nothing short of that is allowed. Quite interesting to get to see that when going frame by frame. So the new run is in the works and I'll update when I think it's good enough quality to share. Enjoy the day

I finished the TAS and it ended at final boss clear at time of 27:51:40 so I'm happy with the sub 28:00. I ended up with 100384 frames so it would be nice to get the frames to sub 100k. I will read the post on how to submit and do that. It's a pretty tight run so it may be tough to lower it 6 seconds to get the sub 100k frames but that's the fun of it. Enjoy the day

Here you go: https://youtu.be/y3DpCwzQ6ls My strats are a bit different than the above TAS of Gyruss so it helps I think to show the differences that we can do. His stage 7-8 Boss is faster than I did so that's good. In my youtube channel I also did 2 videos on how to 'human play' the first 8 stages for those that care to learn. I'll do the rest of the stages when I get time. Enjoy the day Kevin
