I'm gonna use Sound Studio to record those sounds and see for myself... Is there any sort of byte in the game that goes from 0 (Wart is not defeated) to 1 (Wart is defeated)? In the meantime, I'm going to keep looking for what I was looking for in the first place: A glitch, similar to the glitch used later in the level to go to the Birdo stage, but that is used early in the level on the first vine. If my theory is correct, I'll pop up in Wart's domain.

I don't think so. I used to dabble in SMB2 romhacking ages ago, though I wouldn't call myself an expert on it. But I THINK the ending can only be triggered in 7-2. Wart being defeated really isn't anything special, the way he actually dies is different from the other bosses, but like all the other bosses his defeat just triggers the exit door, in this case it leads to the ending. And that exit door has to be in 7-2 for it to work. In other words, if you planted Wart in another stage and defeated him, then nothing would probably happen. (He'd certainly look messed up, since his graphics are only in the World 7 tileset) The Minus World movie is different. Though you don't get the actual ending at the end, the game treats it as such, more or less, and brings you back to the title screen. Which is where the difference here is. Even if your glitch did flag something as 'Wart being defeated' (the game doesn't work like that, but for arguements sake let's say it did) you still wouldn't get thrown into the ending. You have to enter the exit door leading to the ending to get there, and that door is only flagged to appear in Wart's room in 7-2, after he's defeated. And as Bisqwit said, even if that was the case, and Wart was recorded as being 'defeated' there in 1-1, he'd still be there again in 7-2. Say you die after defeating one of the other bosses (throw yourself into the pit in Triclyde's room in 6-3), you still need to fight that boss again after returning to the room because the data has been reset when you reenter. Anyway, I'm not trying to rain on your parade or anything, it's still an amusing glitch, and I really have no idea what IS happening. It's at least worth looking into, even if the end result won't be what you initially thought.

You're right. I had sounds muted when I watched this the first time. It is the "ouch, suffer" sound effect of all minibosses.

Look at my hand, I just threw something! \O_ Bisqwit should rewrite some NES instruction booklets :)

I have an argument about the statement in the filename and the false claim before it, but this movie is cool. I don't understand how that works though. Also, it is 71 frames slower than the previous TAS...

It's sad that it is too much slower. Here is another one. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4983/Kill%20a%20veggie.fcm

Dang... My revised theory is now that Birdo is hit and dies, but respawns anyway. But maybe it's possible to ride the Shyguys to the Birdo stage. Better yet, maybe there's a vine glitch to get to the Birdo stage.

I don't think it hits any boss at all. It's just a bug.

I'll stick to the hypothesis that due some bug, the dying boss attribute is assigned to the flying shyguys (flashing + crying), and because of the perpetual collision between them, they'll continue receiving damage from each others and hence continuously crying.

Killing Birdo is immaterial; you just need to collect the pearl (or whatever) at the end. And Birdo respawns if you go off the screen anyway, so there's nothing special about that. Unless the "stairway" glitch is going to transport you to another level or part of the same level, it's pretty useless. Killing things offscreen is amusing, but not very useful to a speed run.

That's the point... maybe it's possible to kill Birdo and then glitch to the end of the level.

Maybe I should have started a new topic, but here's a level of peach only action: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/5517/alden-peach-only-smb2.fcm It was fun to record. Obviously it's easy to beat genisto's ancient fmv timewise, but I tried to do other neat floaty things in the spirit of his run.

I still hope either a new any%, or new warpless run will obsolete the current peach run... but it seems like Bisqwit decided to keep it the last time a new SMB2 run was submitted... So if it's not gonna be obsoleted by another SMB2 movie, I'd say go for it!

Does anyone know what frame we need to get to birdo's area to get the previous egg in 1-1 ? Here's a WIP 10 frames faster than Alden's WIP (He's at 2288 where I'm at 2278) just after the ladder glitch. It probably doesn't matter since I get the same egg anyways but here it is... (I tried a few time to improve Alden's Birdo fight without succes... didn't try for long though I'll try it thoroughly tomorrow, so this is where it stops). http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/522295710/GLOBE-peach-only-smb2.fcm In case someone is still working on obsoleting Genisto's Peach only run ?? *shrugs* -Should this be in a Peach Only thread or in the SMB 2 thread it's fine?

What's the memory address for y location? I've spent hours and 5,000 rerecords trying to execute this one glitch I'm beginning to doubt is possible.

Unfortunately, it seems the glitch I spent hours looking for doesn't work! Rather than warp you to the last level, it warps you to the start of level 1-1. So I'll stop this run, leaving behind the gem that if you press up+down on a door over a vase you'll enter the vase in Subcon one frame faster. Now that this is off the pile o' five, I'll start working on Tom and Jerry.

I would still like to see an fceu version... I got a little discouraged/distracted though. Watched your WIP and it looks nice! I'll go over it carefully to see what the improvements were (1/6 of a second is hard to catch on a casual watch ;) IMO this movie should definitely focus on style/superplay; speed is not as much of an issue, since if you really want to go fast you shouldn't be using peach anyways :P Not to say that it's not important at all but I think that sacrificing a few frames to see something "cooler" is definitely worth it. Oh, and I guess we should start a separate topic at some point ;)

I was playing SMB2 on the Wii this morning, and I encountered a very strange glitch. When I entered Mouser's room, I was holding a gray snift for no apparent reason. I was playing as Mario, and I didn't do anything unusual like the hold-2-items trick. I tried it on an emu this morning, but I can't seem to reproduce it. I imagine if this were to be reproduced, it would save some time in a full run.

Yeah, through the Virtual Console. It also has a SNES, N64, TurboGraphx-16, and Sega Genesis emulator.

It might be just a bug with the Wii emulation. However, it could be very useful. It could also be used in a warping run, particularly against Wart.

The only known bugs that I know through Wii emulation is the music/sound based stuff, but Nintendo has made it possible to download patches for futures sake.
