78 frames saved in Jungle Jinxes, the bonus is way improved and I was able to do some things that I couldn't do in V8 (namely try some tire shortcuts.) I lost a little bit of time in some places due to the placements of the tires and from doing those shortcuts, but the new techniques/shortcuts I do save more time than is lost, which is apparent by the large number of frames saved.

I know I'd say I wouldn't give anything away so as not to spoil anything, however I will tell a sad little story with Lava lagoon... (which actually desynched for me twice, I have no idea why since those stopped when I switched to 1.0 ROM *shrug*) I watched Snapdragon's 102% SS and I found that yes you can use Enguarde in the section before the bonus, and that while you have to backtrack a little to get him and then dismount in order to hit clapper, that it was still lightning fast to zoom through the levels. But of course, I have to test whether this is faster or not.... and it's not it's slower by 100 frames than the method in V8 which is just leave him and swim normally. :'( poor Enguarde. Here's a halfway mark spoiler, halfway done with Lava Lagoon and halfway done with Crocodile Cauldron (normally I hate giving WIPs with incomplete levels) but this is to showcase what it would look like if I used Enguarde, plus show the first 3 stages of Crocodile Cauldron done (Hothead Hop, Kannon's Klaim, Jungle Jinxes.) When Lava Lagoon is done it won't have that Enguarde section. Crocodile Cauldron midway spoiler, Enguarde test run in Lava Lagoon

This run is not only faster in a matter of frames, but it's even notably faster. And the JJ bonus was fantastic! Sad, that Enguarde is slower. He/she/it makes water levels less boring.

Jungle Jinx bonus I was about to do it the same way, but as I hit the first dragonfly and Dixie was coming back I simply set up a team throw double jump to see what would happen, and saved nearly a second because of it. Enguarde is a he, and is french as well. Ellie is the only recognized female animal buddy in the DKC series, and it's presumed Enguarde is french due to his name. Lava Lagoon is done, and drumroll... 251 FRAMES SAVED wowee. I think only Mainbrace Mayhem comes close to that. Yes, I remembered to dismount Enguarde in the bonus. It's the fastest because I was able to cancel the upwards velocity by... dismounting right into the ceiling, which cancelled all verticalup speed and let me glide downwards to the coin.

Hi, i'm new here and I wonder how bkDJ made this vid?

I'm not sure, you can PM him and he'll gladly explain. It took a lot of work though, especially since he had to pause both of my runs at different times to get them to start at the same time. And the codecs didn't come out right, for instance water was invisible, and I think there was one more graphical problem that I can't remember. Sorry that I haven't worked any further on V9, Super Smas Bros. is taking up my time, but fortunately it's a much shorter run so within the month hopefully I'll be able to work on this again.

oh hey, v9 progress. it's been a while since I checked this thread. Holy crap that's some impressive improvements.

I recorded both versions to avi. then I figured out when to sync them and when to insert black frames. I used avisynth to put them side by side and got the encoded video using x264.exe. The only real dissapointment/glitch was that the rainy level looked like crap. I also had avisynth deal with the sound. I had mplayer rip the sound from the video one channel at a time because I couldn't figure out avisynth's channel thing. and this made the sound syncing not a problem at all. then I threw both channels into sonic foundry and got a wav, and encoded it to mp3 using LAME. then I threw the video and mp3 into mkvtoolnix which muxed them together. I'm sure there are much easier ways of doing the same thing but I'm lazy and that didn't require much thinking on my part. :P

V9 progress is halted until Super Smash Bros High Score Timeattack is done. But the improvements are good enough that I'm excited to bring V9 to a finish. I'm glad that you liked the improvements. I was impressed myself that each level could have saved that many frames, but my figuring is that, besides the tiny mistakes that I have noticed that are improvable, the later levels won't have as much, since my TASing skill increases over time for anything that I do (as is probably the case for anyone) the later levels were better done. However, towards the very end I think I forgot to check on some very small things (like in Screech's Sprint, after the second Barrel Blast I start flapping on first possible frame, which is slower than letting the barrel blast carry me a good ways, and I realized that the restart screen can be skipped very quickly, and I can go straight to the game menu, saving about 8-10 seconds. Both of which I discovered post-publication.

How do you use avisynth? For me avisynth isn't a program just 3 plugins. TCPDeliver.dll, DirectShowSource.dll, colors_rgb.avsi.

there are many howto guides like http://neuron2.net/LVG/avisynth.html I had a huge hardware failure not too long ago so I can't dig up the final code used in the .avs I made for the movie, but all the functions used were default ones in the nice html documentation that came with avisynth.

I'm sorry that I haven't done anything lately but I'd grown so sick of DKC2. But now I've started the any% again, I am for the moment on rattle battle but all the testing is driving me insane. :) The thing about DKC2 that makes me nuts is that it's too much. I find something that looks promising and then I have to test maybe a hundred things and none of it works. I'm always so close to save big time but the game seems to hate me. If the game just registrated a level as completed when you hit the goal target (it does registrate "start-select completed") I could've saved maybe 250 seconds :/ But I just wanted to tell everyone that I've started it again and later on I may try the 102% or maybe DKC 101% again. :)

Oh yeah Arne! Firist time in a while I saw you write in here :D. If you are going to work with a 100% run, please take DKC 1 instead ^^. Because I can be for some use then, lol. And as Comicalflop is working with an 102% improvement (Well... he works with any% too, lol.) Good luck!

well, good to see you posting again Arne. I'm obviously going to be improving my 102%, I was thinking about any% but even though I had saved 10 frames from inside the warps, I had absoluetely no luck with the boss. So I'm probably going to drop any%, especially since I'm also doing Jet Force Gemini which is going to take up a lot of time, so doing any% as well is a bad idea. so yeah work on any% unless you get too frustrated. (In which case I'll pick it up.) I didn't think start+select after hitting the target would work. I wonder if there's anything new that you've discovered about the game. Tompa has discovered a few things with DKC1 101%, so that'd be something to think about also.

102%: Redhot Ride, 97 frames saved. Just Sqauwk's Shaft, where I have a few ideas on where I can save time (maybe use Diddy the whole way through- something to test) then Kleaver's Kiln, then sit back patiently and wait for Arne to submit any% before I continue this.

Major Edit: Here is the improved Pirate Panic stage, 105 frames faster than the published run, 7 frames faster than Arne's attempt linked in his any% submission. This will likely be the only shown stage until submission for this new and improved version for 102%.

That was some crazy stuff. :) Shaving off 105 frames just like that is quite awesome. Keep it up.

So NxCy has been making a 102% run, here is his progress: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/243552220/DKC2-102WIP%20nxcy.smv He beats me by 4ish frames in the first level, and comes up with great strats for the rest. He stops at the first bonus in Jungle Jinx. He's uncertain at this point whether or not he will complete the entire run, but if he does, he is certainly the man to do it. I wish him luck, and I hope everyone else enjoys the improvements he has found.

Hmm, it desyncs for me after the second bonus level. Somehow, after a lot of fooling around, it still finishes the first level, but then chaos ensues :P I'm using "Snes9X v1.43+ v12 (beta12 + lua 0.05)" and version 1.1 of the ROM ("Donkey Kong Country 2 - Diddy's Kong Quest (U) (V1.1) [!].smc")

You should be using the same one I used in my movie, snes9x v1.43 v9. That or you have the wrong ROM. If you need the snes9x I used, there's a link to it in my submission text.

I'll try that, thanks :) The link in your submission text seems to be broken, so I googled it and found a copy on Saturn's website. Time to give it another go! Edit: nope, no luck with that copy either. Checked my ROM with NSRT 3.4 and it seems to be good. I'll track down a copy of the 1.0 ROM.. if that doesn't do it, then I guess your build and the one Saturn links to are different somehow, or something very strange is going on. Edit2: The v1.1 ROM was messing things up. I'm watching the WIP on a verified v1.0 ROM now and it's working fine :)

Finally watched the rest of it, very enjoyable so far! Looking forward to seeing how you handle some of the auto-scrolling levels (I can't remember how many there are in this game, or if the racing levels count) - keep it up! :)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=o4UD8Om5ngk Someone managed a "zip" with a glitch in DKC2. Is there any place in the game that this might be a useful thing to do?

IIRC there is one in the current movie in one of the castle levels. Not sure if it's the same trick, but there's definitely an upward zip.

I have an .smv recorded last year where I did this zip. You get stuck at the top, if there was a way out or to go even higher it would be immensely helpful, but as it stands it's not useful. The zip itself is the result of doing a backwards switch into the wall, as shown in Chain Link Chamber. Not every wall you get into will make you zip (you can move around inside the walls, usually you fall down); I've gotten into just about every single wall in Chain Link Chamber, and only two zipped;, one was not useful, the other is featured in the any%/102%. If you can get into the wall in, say, Toxic Tower or Castle Crush, that would be immensely helpful. I remember trying but not succeeding for both of those stages.

So I've restarted the run. The first world is finished roughly 20 seconds faster than the current published run. SMV
