In a never-ending quest to find games that I've never played before, decided to try this one out.
  • TAS Timing = Power On = 6:31.75/6:12.75
  • RTA Timing = Starts @ "New Game" Selection = 6:30.90
Comparison using RTA WR timing sits this run currently 18.16s ahead of RTA WR.

Top Gear 2 All Tracks Beaten in under 2 Hours!
This is the first ever proof of this game being beaten in under 2 hrs! This has been a goal of mine for the past 3 years, and now I can finally show it off.
Game Objectives:
  • Uses Bizhawk 2.9.1 (BSNES v115+)
  • Aims for fastest Completion Time
  • Abuses Programming Erros (Speed Glitch)
  • Heavy Glitch Abuse (Wall Glitches)
  • Takes Damage to save time (car Armor Diagram)
  • Uses a Game Restart Sequence (usual frame 33 soft restart)
  • Genre: Racing
This movie is one that I've been dreaming of for 3 years. This took many trials and tribulations through rigorous effort to exploit and abuse the games mechanics to get a time below 2 hrs. Such a goal was thought impossible, but alas, has now been proven to be possible. Over the course of testing around 438 branches to quantify this goal I made sure that this was going to happen whether I wanted it or not. I really hope you end up enjoying it as I did make it, it's one of my biggest passion projects and I don't say that lightly.
Tricks, Glitches, Techniques
Hyper Reverse Super Speed (HRSS)
When getting the car in a speed state that is greater than a value of 238, you can frame perfectly gear back down into Reverse and whatever speed was kept over it can't go down quickly enough to quantify a slower speed rate. By allowing the car to hit another car from the backend and also gearing up past 1st gear, the car will go past the intended speed calculation of 262 and break into the upper 400's. While going this fast, the car doesn't actually have a turning animation so to keep it from spinning/crashing I have to meticulously calculate a speed value of 342 or lower *in some instances* to have a better chance at gaining control.
Hyper Extended Super Speed (HESS)
This is a trick is used on long straight aways and allows the car to keep a speed value of 355 MPH. In order to keep this speed, the car needs to have a nitro boost active, otherwise the speed glitch will soft cap at 342 and lower drastically back to its normal rate. This makes races that would otherwise be 4 or 5 seconds longer now shorter.
Backwards Momentum Wall Glitch (BMWG)
Some tracks have a mirrored version a wall on the opposite side of a tunnel it occupies. This means that whatever side the intended glitch works on will give me a wall glitch like a normal one would. By gearing up past 238 MPH and gearing back down to reverse and gearing back up again, it will keep whatever speed is left over and go past the intended 95 MPH backwards rate the game allows. This makes the wall glitches work otherwise the speed at which you travel backwards is too low to clip.
Object Displacement Clip (ODC)
When a wall and an object such as a turn merger or a light post collide with one another and the car at the same time the car will get displaced due to the object being way to close to a wall and skips any intended area that would otherwise be unskippable. Take Toronto as an example.
Nitro Timer Extension (NTE)
Under normal conditions, the game will forcibly slow the car down to its intended rate after a nitro has been used. By timing the nitro usage at specific points, the car can't slow down past 228 MPH. This is particularly useful when going down or up a sloped surface. Take Chile as an example.
Computer Bump Speed Up (CBSU)
This is a technique used at the beginning of the run and a tiny bit later, to gain an advantage by beating the track quicker. When a computer car bumps the car from the back, you'll gain whatever speed they had at the time of the bump and jump up in speed rate for a short amount of time.
Off-Road Timer Manipulation (O-RTM)
By pin-pointing the finish line point some frames can be saved by driving off the road and into the grass. This will change how the timer behaves and will give a lower time than if the car stayed on the road.

previously published movie from 3 years ago which stood at: 2:11:59.62 @60.0988
Current Movie Frames: 1:57:21.52 @60.0988 <- actual frame rate (not 60.00)
Time Difference: 14:36 (14 Minutes, 36 Seconds) faster than 2:11:59.62

Possible Improvements: I'm sure there may be some frames here and there, but as of now I just want to be done and leave it off on a good note and not sour the moment. If someone wants to improve this sometime down the line (not me) feel free to.

Travel to Any Country

  • Travel to Any Country is a developer intended way to travel from the start of the game to the end using a stored password in memory to access its content. The game has multiple different passwords, some known and some hidden. This password is to skip to The United States allows the player to only play the last 4 race to beat the game. The game initially has 64 tracks, that of which 61 1/2 are skipped to obtain victory. The Password is: 3V53-<GPG-V<34-2H2TP-HDC33

Why the Fully Stocked Car?

  • Unlike the movie for demonstration purposes, this movie aims to beat the game in the shortest amount of time possible aka Fastest Completion. The fully stocked car allows maximum speed gain in the shortest amount of time possible.

Car Details:

  • Engine Class: 4
  • Tire Class: Wet 4
  • Tire Class: Dry 0
  • Gearbox Class: 4
  • Nitro Class: 3 (later upgraded to 4)
  • 4 = bottom right of each Class

Why Should I Care About this Run?

  • This run is a culmination of 10 years of hard work boiled down into 8 minutes of gameplay. While on the surface this doesn't seem meaningful, it means something to me. I've spent countless years trying to perfect what I consider my "Magnum Opus." All Tracks will always be a separate importance which undoubtedly is still being perfected to this day.

What is so special about this? I thought this was humanly doable.

  • Well in that regard yes, in the short answer, no. Why not? Well, RNG has to be manipulated on a frame for 1/60th of a second that of which each individual frames must follow a sequence of inputs nearly impossible for humans to accomplish. If a certain RNG pattern lands on the 4th frame of the Start press that follows, it must be pressed on the 4th frame, same with the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st possible frame prior and any other frames after.

What is this glitch I see on Race #2?

  • Race 2's glitch is what is called a "wall glitch" in the game's memory their certain flags that need to occur in a short amount of time, and if the rendered position is considered too far out of bounds the region of the wall gets its flag set to the "finish the race" position, in this case 1st. Not all walls and position act the same, some require special setups and this one requires precise timing, speed and position. This glitch was initially found by a community member by Yoschimidstu

How Come you Drive Using Manual?

  • Driving in Manual allows me to take advantage of increasing speed of the car in a faster amount of time compared to letting the game automatically do it for me using the Automatic Transmission. If I use Automatic, I can't control my speed variables and makes it, so the speed gain is significantly slower.

Where is the Money Coming From?

  • The money amount of $150,000 is coming from the password glitch which places me from a "continued" placement, despite never racing in the United States the fake placement is from identifying where the game needs to be at a current state in order to compete against the CPU cars.

Why is The United States Only Completed?

  • The United States is the 16th country in the game and the final country to beat in order to finish the game by reaching the credits.

I See You Fazing Through Objects, this seems like Cheating!

  • In fact, it's not! The game has some objects like Road Mergers to tell the player where to turn next. What the game doesn't tell you is that if you drive very carefully in-between these mergers you can go on the outside of them. Doing this, makes the turn that would have been too sharp initially, to allow me to keep speed throughout.

How Come you are Losing Frames on the Start Press?

  • I did this due to manipulating the Opponent RNG so I could have a faster Nitro start. If I were to press it on the first available frame, I would get blocked and have to drive slower. So I went through and made sure I could find the fastest possible start to a race.

How come you slow down at the end of San Fransisco? Wouldn't it be faster to keep pressing X?

  • This is where the stylistic choice comes into play. Unlike the previous movies before it, the time the game gives me will still end up being the same regardless of if I hold or release X. Cutting off holding X guarantees a faster movie, even if the initial thought would be the opposite.

I thought the movie for All Tracks "Had" to have to the A press on the final textbox where the money is counted, and the player position is shown!

  • While this is an opinion, it's not exactly required. All this does is allows the movie to be longer for no reason and makes the arbitrary input to exist. The overall difference is stopping at a "Stylistic Choice" rather than a required one. Yes, the movie for All Tracks has this and didn't include the additional point I bring up here.

Why Not 2 Players?

  • I've had the idea to try it, but, ultimately, decided against it. The game becomes less enjoyable due to sound overload and the lag is crazy to control. In Hindsight this would be a cool one-off thing, it's something that could be done sometime if I so choose.

How Come you Play on the Hardest Difficulty?

  • Hardest Difficulty aka Championship is Top Gear 2's hardest difficulty. By choosing this difficulty I eliminate any possible early cars to show up on laps 2 or 3 to change how the outcome is affected. If Normal or Easy are chosen the mode actually becomes harder the faster, you go, and not in the best outcome possible. Cars can be anywhere on lower difficulties and staying with the hardest makes the run better.

This file indicates 39 frames. What Context does this infer?

  • I labeled these 39 frames not because it's only 43 frames faster than the previous submission, but the number of frames I saved from the user file movie of 8:08.36

Possible Improvements

  • For now, none. I can't think of anything. If by some miracle that there is time save, feel free to add yourself as a co-author.
If there is anything I missed to add to this submission via text, feel free to ask.

I thought password related movies are not allowed.

  • This is where confusion comes in. You see, the game CAN allow a player to input a password if they so choose, and that alone doesn't quantify the required conditions for the rules. However, in this case, the game ALREADY stored the password for me to use, which negates any requirement to input the password manually.

This File Doesn't Have the Extra "unnecessary" inputs AFTER the credits end.
To me this makes the most sense, as the arbitrary ruling of ending on the copyright screen does not make sense.
AFTER the final textbox in which the characters are in the ocean makes more sense. This would lower the time drastically and doesn't alter the IGT as it's still 35:20

How Rolling Works:

  • Rolling is faster than running, so try to roll as much as you can. Rolling through 1 enemy only gives you a speed boost sometimes. Rolling through 2 or more enemies always gives you a speed boost though (similar to SNES).

How Ledge Rolling Works:

(video credit goes to SilentWolf444)
  • If you roll from the very edge of a platform, you will get a roll with significantly low trajectory. The window for getting these rolls is fairly tight, but it can be useful for reaching certain enemies from below, such as the Krem at the end of Barrel Cannon Canyon while rolling off the tree. It's also good to be aware of so you don't kill yourself doing it accidentally!

How Unrestricted Rolls Work:

(video credit goes to SilentWolf444)
  • While being shot out of a barrel onto regular terrain, if you initiate a roll upon landing without running prior to the roll, you can continue running after the roll rather than needing to jump before the roll ends. This can be used to chain 2 rolls in a row without needing to jump and can be used in various places in the run, such as the end of Barrel Cannon Canyon and in Tree Top Town.

How Jump Momentum Conservation Works:

(video credit goes to SilentWolf444)
  • When you jump out of a roll, your speed immediately gets snapped to regular running speed. However, if you have B released prior to jumping, your speed will more gradually decrease from whatever it was during your roll down to walking speed. With this in mind, you can conserve some of your momentum out of rolls while you jump. Ideally you will begin holding B again right before or at the time your speed drops down to around the value for regular running speed, which takes some getting used to. This can be used all throughout the run to save frames everywhere. The effects of this are more dramatic when you have more speed built up before jumping, but even doing this optimally out of a standard roll can save ~1-2 frames, which could add up over the course of the run. In scenarios where doing this would compromise your platforming in any way (e.g. make your rolls/jumps slightly less optimized) it's not worth it to go for.

How Roll Momentum Conservation Works:

(video credit goes to SilentWolf444)
  • While rolling through multiple enemies, if you release forward on the dpad during the final enemy you will conserve your momentum for a longer period of time, causing you to slide forward. This seems to primarily work while rolling through enemies while in the air but it can also be done while grounded at times (needs more testing). This can be seen done at the end of Forest Frenzy (notice how Diddy slides into the exit while standing still briefly). This is rarely used, as Jump Momentum Conservation is more practical in most situations

How Fast Shots Work:

(video credit goes to SilentWolf444)
  • When you shoot out of barrels, if you hold forward while holding B (run button, not jump!) you will actually slow down in most cases. To avoid slowing down, you will typically want to avoid holding B until near the end of being shot out of a barrel aka when you start slowing down (or when you land depending on how high you are after your momentum ends from the barrel shot). However, holding A is completely fine and can even extend Fast Shots quite a bit while bouncing off of enemies. This is used extensively in Vulture Culture but has applications pretty much everywhere there are barrels that shoot you horizontally. Note that there are other fast shots where it is alright to hold B, as long as you're not holding forward. This usually is only the case for certain blast barrels, like the one leading up to halfway in Snow Barrel Blast.

Might as well improve, currently enjoying this game. (Uses previous finished BK2 file hence the rerecord count is closer to the previous amount only slightly more).
