This interested me since I saw the CB2 TAS. Any% because I haven't got every platinum relic on regular console. This would involve just 25 crystals and beating all bosses, right? I'll start it on a few days, but we'll see what will be the result. And does PCSX support PS2 controllers via USB things? It would help doing this. Anyone else is interested? // edited the any% out of the title, as requested.

I'd watch a run of this game, however I'm unsure of how it would be received by those not familiar with it. This game has very repetitive levels which was already a problem with the previous two titles. I believe it may be more of a problem here, but I'd like to think that the occasional race/scuba level might make things more interesting. I think that 25 crystals + bosses would be a good place to start. I'm guessing that you either 1) want to use a USB controller to TAS and the answer is that you will need joy2key because I can't get newer versions of pcsx to take controller input directly; or you mean 2) that you are wondering if Crash 3 takes analogue input, which it does and I don't think that this is supported by pcsx, however I don't think that the PSX joysticks were particularly sensitive and it shouldn't cause large time loss. I'll happily watch your WIPs and provide feedback here if you post them. My Crash 2 run may provide some inspiration, but you may want to carefully test continuous-sliding v slide-jumping on different terrain gradients because that may save some time. Also, I wouldn't be at all surprised if slide-jumping was faster in Crash 3.

I'll probably start it today, I'm not sure how fast I'll proceed on it, or if it will ever be done, but I hope so. Got to test some things (like that is sliding faster than jumping etc) before running. And I meant with that USB controller that PCSX would support the controller (not most important the analogue sticks) so it would be more comfortable to do the run with original controller instead of keyboard, except the hotkeys. But we'll see how this run will go. And this will be on the NTSC-U version, I forgot to mention that.

I was wondering how the relics would be done in a 100% TAS. I mean what would be aimed for? - shortest real time (probably boring since it would be exactly the same as the level) - shortest game time - shortest time to gold - shortest time to platinum It might also be interesting to get all the relics without the running shoes, but I'm not sure if that's recommended.

It'd probably be the shortest time for platinum (shown in the game). But this isn't my problem since I don't have to get relics on any%/low% TAS which are practically the same in Crash games. And forget about that usb thing, I'll just do it with frame advance and keyboard. It'll be just easier.

Seeing the fastest box route would be interesting, but switching from 'aims for fastest time' to 'aims for fastest in game time' halfway through a run probably wouldn't do down well here. It'd probably be fastest to go through the game to get the running shoes and then back through with them. I'd watch a 100% run, but it'd never be accepted here as it would be very repetitive. Like I said above Joy2Key is a good way to go if you want to use your controller, but if keyboard suits you then that's cool. Also, you may want to record a (very half-assed) test run first to make sure that (1) the game is emulated properly/at all all the way through; and (2) you should plan a 'mask route'. Using the mask saves 1 second per use in Crash 2 so it should be the same here. If the three masks take you more than one second out of the optimal route then it is not worth it. Also, certain levels take your collected masks away automatically (it is the 'boulders' levels in Crash 2 so it may be more frequent here as there are more different types). Because of this I wasn't able to find much use for the invincibility, but it is still worth testing. Most importantly however, is that just having a mask and taking the damage can get you by certain enemies and timed objects faster (I do this in one of Crash 2's sewer levels quite often, but I can't remember which one), it may also open up different routes. A test run should only take a couple of days, alternatively you could just watch SDA's speedrun to see where the masks are placed, but I don't think that that method would be as reliable.

If the run is going to be too repetitive to be accepted on this site, then post it on Youtube. I'd love watching 100% runs.

What about 105% completion? Edit: About what MezzoDragon said... I wonder if we could have links to YouTube TAS videos that aren't published on this site in a more accessible place.

I won't do 105% since I haven't done it on even a real console (I have done 102% or 103% (I don't remember exactly) completion on PS1 real console), but I'll start with this any%/low% TAS. But I can't do this for a week from now on, not home before March 11, when I have some free days to progress. Hopefully I'll do some progression.

I'd watch this, I liked how Mukki did the 2 earlier games in the series and I think this game has the same potential. A 25 Crystals + bosses run would be the most interesting. You should definitively explore possible abuse of the whirlwind spin to skip portions of the future-themed levels etc. You should also have a look at the non-TAS run at Speed Demos Archive, it may give you some hints and tricks for this run. Sadly I will not be able to watch your wips if you don't post them on youtube or something as I have only the European game and cannot find an American. (NOTE: This is not a rom request)

I started it, but I accidentatly overwrote the save states.. should take backups. I had done almost the first level (I found out that sliding is faster than jumping, correct me if I'm wrong?), we'll see if this run will be done any time. But I try to finish it on some time.

Aw, that sucks. To properly test this you need to measure the distance you can travel, how many frames you need to travel the distance and how many frames are needed for cool down before you can jump/slide again. Considering the level layouts this may vary... I cannot exactly remember if Crash's speed was affected by uphill or downhill movement. But this may also be worth checking, because then you may wish to use different movement techniques depending on the ground.

I made TAS of Crash3 experimentally. But I don't yet run Crash3 because I'm tasing Crash2 now. However, the depth of some object is wrong because of the bug of GPU. Link to video

Can you show an example? I watched the video and didn't notice anything out of place.

An Any% run would really be comparable to the first half of a 105% run, because you aren't awarded the Crash Dash until the end of the game. You could still get the Platinum relics on all of the non-Crash-running levels during your first go-around. What techniques were you using during that TAS experiment video? It looked like you were sliding off of some edges, to get a speed boost, but how were you keeping your jump/move speed so high after that? :) Crash Bandicoot: Warped is my favorite Crash game, so I'd be very interested in seeing either an any% or a 105% run!

does anyone know about version differences in this game? I've heard people saying in JP version some techniques are faster while in others they aren't, that mixing PAL CD with NTSC PlayStation (or viceversa) makes Crash run faster, that PAL is faster on some levels and slower on others, that diagonal jumping/zigzag works with some controllers and not with others…

Spikestuff, that was impressive as hell. I hope the graphics can be fixed eventually.

We (me and my partner) hope so too as we keep going with the glitchy graphics and we will be taking our time on the glitched out levels like Under Pressure. Edit: It hit Page 2 WOO
