Gonna be hard to argue with Kriole's 100% Aria of Sorrow run.

I think that the Breath of Fire II TAS have heavy luck manipulation, aswell the Aria of Sorrow "all souls" too.

I also think Genesis Phantasy Star IV (USA) by janus in 1:35:58.8 ought to get a shot at this one. The luck manipulation wasn't perfect or approached mathematically like Shining Force has been in the past, but it avoids all encounters and beats enemies at ridiculously low levels. EDIT: Heh, I forgot there was a Shining Force update this year too. Seems weird for same author/same game from a previous year to be in this, but it's definitely lucky! Genesis Shining Force (USA) by DarkKobold in 1:59:59.05.

You all forgot this one: SNES Romancing SaGa (JPN v1.0) in 02:14.77 by T.M. (aka. knbnitkr) According to the submission comments, the author was lucky enough to beat a RPG in about 2 minutes.

Voted for Aria of Sorrow because the luck manipulation was insane.

AoS, obviously. Manipulating more than a hundred drops is really something that deserves an award.

Shinning Force, its a 2 hours long tas, and played by a lua bot (that does manipulate luck), to me AoS look ridiculous in term of luck manipulation compared to that, as in, not impressive at all.

this is NOT the Best Lua Bot Award. this is the No-Life TASer Award.

Yeah well i can easly tell it took way more efforts/time to bot up shinning force than dropping all souls.

I voted for All-Souls, the reason it took so many years to make was from the the ridiculous luck manipulation needed. And Kriole did it in impressive fashion.

All Souls 4tw. Mind you, I do NOT agree with PS's statement about this being the No-Life TASer award. Joking or not.. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

No offense here, but you guys lack consistency. Comparisons in fastism: 2009's: [1428] Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow (USA) "100% souls" by Kriole in 28:01.58 vs [1397] SNES Romancing SaGa (JPN v1.0) by knbnitkr in 02:14.77 (others probably wouldn't have nominated this run) 2008's: 1145 Genesis King's Bounty in 00:09.93 by gia & Aqfaq vs 1227 NES Wizardry - Proving Grounds of the Mad Overloard by TaoTao in 00:45.82 Comparisons in botism: 2009's: [1428] Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow (USA) "100% souls" by Kriole in 28:01.58 vs [1312] Genesis Shining Force (USA) by DarkKobold in 1:59:59.05 2008's: 1145 Genesis King's Bounty in 00:09.93 by gia & Aqfaq vs Some runs we forgot to (or decided not to) nominate at all because they were not made with bots

It is true that there isn't much consistency here. The thing is, I feel that the luck in AoS is very obvious and visually impressive to people who don't know the game, whereas it's not as sensational in Shining Force for those who haven't played it.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

Bump for final vote. I voted for Shining Force. All Souls is an impressive feat with the random drops. However, Shining Force is the most brutal on that poor RNG. The luck manipulation done is off the carts.

Which TAS do you think manipulated luck the best in 2009?
The question is specially questionable for this category: man vs. bot? The bot won last time. Thus this time we shall balance light and darkness.

That gave me the idea that maybe we should have a separate award for the heaviest use of bots or other programmed tools which automate the creation of the TAS as much as possible? After all, the use of scripts and other tas-by-programming has been clearly on the increase during the past years.

I agree with Warp (whoa, never thought I'd say that.) I think, instead of being directly attached to a published TAS, it should be independent. I.E. best Lua Coder of the Year, or best Lua Script of the Year. The best Lua script might have a caveat of requiring posting to TAStools. That would encourage open source sharing of Lua Scripts!
