If nobody is working on Metal Slug 3, I will work on it now (any objections?). My only concern is the final boss which seem to have massive amount of HP. Looks very ugly too. I'll play on the hardest difficulty, 1-player but I am unsure of my goal/s. If I pick the hardest difficulty, I bet it will take a looooong time to kill all enemies if your aim is to kill everything knowing you are playing on the hardest difficulty. Though normal difficulty would probably be much more suited. Well, thats my opinion. Then there is the final bosses massive HP to consider. Also, I asked this before I started my Metal Slug X run thread, is there any advice I should be aware of? Speak now or forever hold your breathe!
I'd say just go all out like you did for the Metal Slug X run. It was fun/enjoyable.
I did a test run of a 100% Metal Slug a long time ago and it turned out to be pretty good. The only parts that were really boring/cut the flow were when 20 or so enemies would spawn in a row and I'd have to wait and kill them one at a time.
Oh, a pointer that I think you might have missed for Metal Slug X: crouching increases firing rate of all weapons, especially while fat.
I am just a silhouette, a silhouette of a memory of a solitary night .. nothing more.
That's definitely not on the highest difficulty, considering he's able to take out the alien spider bot things with a single melee attack and the braincase aliens (that shoot the green rings you have to jump through) die to a handful of heavy machinegun rounds.
Edit: duh! It even says "level 4" on the bottom of the screen. Way to go there, Der.

level 8 is bullshit made for people without a life.
Stay with level 4, dude.

Ya think so? Because not only do I prefer making this in "regular" level, but I also agree that it will take a lot of shizzle time to especially beat the final boss. Just take a look at the SDA speedrun of this game that plays at the hardest difficulty.

I have some sad news :( I am certainly not a quitter but I haven't managed to tas a single frame. I can start recording and all, but if I save, end movie, replay, load a savestate and then frame advance, it gives me that guru error message and stops working. Never had this problem while tasing Metal Slug X. Would be glad if anyone can verify this. Hope someone can make this work because I endured the random desyncs and crashes with X so I don't mind it at all.
I had that problem with msx, I found that not pausing the game then letting the move play for a few sec then loading the save state let it play for a few sec, then pause and reload seemed to sove the problem.

Yeah I know of this method and used it when I recorded my Metal Slug X run. However, applying this method for Slug 3 didnt work. It crashes or freezes instantly the second you pause and use frame advance :( Please verify this.

I must say, I cannot wait for a Metal Slug 3 TAS. My friend and I randomly bought it for original Xbox, and it was an amazingly hard game. The Xbox version has a harder difficulty than the arcade version, which made some bosses nearly impossible (I forget which level it is, but the boss that shoots ghost dogs or whatever). The last level was insane for obvious reasons. Like I said, totally looking forward to this.

I would like to make a run of it, if the emulator wouldn't go wrong every time.

I really don't like the Mission 4 boss (the one that shoots the ghost wolves), mostly because he has this tiny hitbox that you can't hit with grenades, and if you're standing under him to shoot him, then odds are good later in the fight that you won't be able to get into the safe zone for his sweeping laser attack fast enough.
A hint for dodging the ghosts, though: they speed up right before they dive. If you just jump vertically right before they hit, you should dodge them.

Non-assisted speedruns SUCK, especially if it's a neo geo game at level 8..

AngerFist, I am going to challenge you. I'm also working on Metal Slug 3 now, using Level-8 and 1-player. Good luck to you, my friend.

Excellent. But did you get passed the crashes? I had and still have trouble using frame advance without it crashing. Though I havent used the new version of Finalburn Alpha (V.04 something).
I'm using FBA-RR v0.0.3.01. It could avoid crashing. By the way, how was your progress?
Wait, I've got an idea, why don't we make a run together?

Sure it would be fun working with you :) Get the latest FBA here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7234&start=120 If you want, we can take turns working on each stage. So if you dont mind, finish the first stage, send the file to me and I'll work on the second stage. Also, have you heard of IRC? Its basically a program where you can chatt with other happy friends! So if you can, install IRC, come to #tasvideos and lets have a word there. If not, simply send me the file when you are done with the first stage. Good luck Mr HappyLee!
Edit: Is there any chance we can do this choosing level 4? Before you say no, watch the current speedrun of Metal Slug 3 from SDA. Look at how incredibly long it took to kill the final boss. Sure, this is a TAS but it still would take a lot of time to kill it. Think about it Mr. Happy Happy Happiest Lee!
You can also use IRC without installing anything if you go here: http://webchat.freenode.net/. Type "HappyLee" as your name and #tasvideos as the channel.
Also, a vote in favor of level 4. As much as I love Metal Slug 3, the only notable difference level 8 is going to bring is 5+ surplus minutes of repetitive shooting at bosses. Which is something I, and possibly many others, could do without.
