Maybe the run could start from SRAM in order to do it on Hard Mode, so that you get Hellfire at the end?
The problem with this game is that the collected souls and items are transfered from the first play through, no way to start a clean Hard Mode without hacking the save-file. Which is probably questionable if it is to be allowed for this game.
Isn't there a way to basically drop all of your souls, items, and money prior to starting the Hard Mode run? It wouldn't require hacking, just special preparation.
You cannot drop the boss souls.

I might have bothered with the Hellfire soul if it was needed for any sort of completion, but it isn't. You don't need it for 100% souls, nor for Chaos Ring. You don't even collect it, it's given to you. I've been trying to establish a feeling for the game and how luck manipulation works, luckily it works pretty much identical to Aria of Sorrow (even the enemies change RNG at the same rate they did in the original). I also noted something interesting during the movement pattern - if you attack or cast a bullet soul after a duck, the animation only lasts for 1 frame, so you don't have to cancel your autoattack with a backdash. This is awesome for saving frames. Also, during the golem fight in the opening, you can cancel a normal attack into a special attack, so the special attack connects twice. Pretty cool. Hopefully it syncs, I've noticed that the modern emulators have a bad habit of desyncing alot for people.

Thank you, I'll try. Even though this game is fairly similar to Aria of Sorrow, I still feel like an amateur when TASing it. I'll keep the WIPs short so hopefully people can point out mistakes more often, heh. I just finished Flying Armor, and I'm about to find out how to do Magic Seals, so I figured it might be a good idea to WIP. Flying Pie

About the seals: You will find out that they are not so picky about how they are drawn, I don't know the exact limits of how off you can be before the seal is considered incorrect, while it's most likely so that the any% TASes enter the seals optimally it may be possible to save frames here. And before I forget (I just remembered) in case you did not notice: The pause menu responds to taps on the touch screen, you may want to test various taps as well as pad-navigation for each pause menu entry to see if the fastest method for navigation changes depending on the current state of the game. I will watch your second WIP tomorrow.

I actually did think of this while doing the pause screen, luckily. It saved 1 frame for each item/soul equipped, which is really neat-o.

Finally sampled the flying pie, it was really nice. I cannot think of any improvements to the recipe.

I'm looking forward to seeing this on the workbench, far-off though that date may be. Good luck!

Aff, did a pretty big mistake on the Warg's, apparently you can take damage much earlier and still be propelled to the right, gonna redo from there =/. Edit: And I also found out that glitched level-up/soul screens works in this aswell. Cool stuff. 101 frames saved at the Flying Armor door, really nice.

I redid Flying Armor which took longer than I thought it would... I needed him to swing either left, stay in place, or swing down, and this is apparently determined when you enter the room, so I had to redo until I got a favorable RNG. Also, I had him swing much lower, which allowed me to throw the last axe earlier. Also, I noticed that it's possible, much like in Aria of Sorrow, to move for 1 frame after a soul screen message. I used this to glide, backdashing caused a lot more lag than the glide, and glide reaches a teensy tiny bit farther. I was surprised how smooth the Ouija Table went, it took me seriously like 300 revisits when I played it unassisted, so I was a little worried. But well, it wasn't too bad after all. Not sure if I should switch back to Armor Knight directly after using the Flying Armor... it's probably faster, so I should look to redo that, unless I should just wait out for a better guardian soul and save myself a pause screen. Great fresh pie. Hoping it to be close to AoS in terms of goodness by the end.

Hopefully it will be, atleast the bossfights in DoS are more entertaining, thanks to the Katanas... Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to take a small break from actually working on the run to planning a route. The Manticore I'm fighting currently has a huge delay arc on his soul, so I need to see if there are any other Manticores en route which have a smaller soul arc. I noticed that this game really really lacks weapons. I know there's a Kotetsu in the Dark Chapel which you can reach by jumping on the Imps but it's still only a tier 3 weapon... feels like I'm going to have to rely a lot on spells, or Devil soul most likely. That's some really nice pie you're making there. Keep up the good work.

I'm done with the planning and it was much easier than I thought (although still took me pretty much an entire day), since there's is virtually no clean-up. Unfortunately there are 2 souls which are really out of the way, Yeti and Wakwak tree... I'm thinking of saving them for very last so I can use Black Panther. This may or may not be faster, especially considering the Wakwak tree - there is no doubt in my mind that Yeti is faster with Black Panther, since you have to warp to it anyways. The Wakwak tree however can be gotten on the way to the Pinnacle, with a fairly large detour. I'm going to have to test this after I'm done with Zephyr. But everything else has been accounted for and I can carry on as I used to. Sadly there are no Manticores on my route, but I believe it's possible to collect the soul very early by taking damage. No pie today =(.

I've made a little progress today, mainly Balore and the 2 Golem souls. There was nothing I could do about the Manticore it seems, I wanted to pick it up the same way as the Bomber Armor soul... but the soul never arced the way I wanted it to, which I guess is due to the Manticore's big hitbox. Somewhat of a shame, but I still improved it by 5 frames, making it look a look more acceptable. Pie <3

I've been trying to watch your wips but for some reason the movie descync right in the beginning. I'm using the 0.9.8 version of the emulator and the (U) version of the rom. Do i have to enable/disable any option for it ro work?

I haven't tampered with any of the settings, and all other DoS videos on the site sync with my rom, so I don't know what might be the problem. Where exactly does it desync? I've noticed wrong version of the emulator pretty much always desync at the first Armor Knight.

I think the run only syncs with "Enable Advanced Bus Timing Emulation" checked under Emulation settings. I have been getting desyncs so either, but I've been using 0.9.7 until now. The run made it a lot farther with the option enabled.

Check that you have Advanced Bus-Level Timing on in Emulation settings.

I've made quite a lot of progress, but I can't say I'm happy with it. I had to skip The Creature cause I couldn't even find the soul after like 3 hours of work. Luckily there's another encounter on the way to Subterranean Hell. Also, it should be possible to skip any of the Catoblepas, probably kill both but get the soul from the 2nd one. The issue is that I had to use both to manipulate the Skeleton Farmer. I'll try more tomorrow, but I'm done for the day. Pie

The creature soul has one of the rarest droprates in the game to my knowledge. To the point where I never actually picked it up in any of my playthroughs. I think you should be approaching it when you're stronger so the fight takes less long. I've also just now come to see your WIP, and I must say, really great work so far. Keep it going.

After some hexediting, I managed to add a potion to the Blunt Sword pause screen, this allows me to take damage from the Catoblepas' instead of killing them, a huge timesaver no doubt, since there are more places to take damage up ahead.

A full minute done since the last WIP - everything up to Dimitrii. The Mandragora looks kinda of slow, but that's not because I'm trying to manipulate, it's because I'm waiting for the axe to connect. If I had moved any earlier the axe would've disappeared. I'm fairly content with that trio of souls, I had a few ideas in mind and this one was the fastest one as it turned out, which is really nice. I'm not sure if I should pick up Valkyrie where I do, while it is pretty damn rare there might be other places where there is less delay. I'll have to check that. Pie

Random question -- are the souls in DoS on average more rare than the ones in AoS? I always had that impression but as far as I can tell there's no numbers published for AoS so I can't do a direct comparison. DoS just felt really stingy with powerups in general, and getting any non-boss/key soul was a horrible grind.
