Does the timer in SMBD count slower than the timer in the original SMB for NES? Because I've beaten the first level in with 371 left and the record for the first level is 370, but I know I'm not doing it faster.

Just tested it by running the lastest NES SMB1 TAS and a TAS I just made side by side. It seems that the coin area that you find after going down the first pipe is shorter height-wise in SMBDX than the NES version. Also, at the end of the level, there are seven stairs to climb in the DX version as opposed to eight in the original. I suppose this change was made because of the screen height (the seventh stairs in the DX version just barely touches the top of the viewable screen). http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/324668083/SMBDX-Test2.vbm My ROM is "Super Mario Bros. DX (V1.0) (U) [C][!]". Here is a video comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0FaKwcB4As

The height of the stairs doesn't matter, because you can still have unbroken horizontal speed going up. What matters is that the stairs are closer in SMB Deluxe.

So, because I don't want to create a new topic (with what is pretty much a request); has anyone thought of doing a TAS of the challenge levels? Where you have to get a certain high score, 5 red coins, and a hidden yoshi egg? Even though I can almost max out the score meter on the bottom of the stage select screen, nothing is perfect until it is TASd, you know?

The height of the stairs dictates the length of the stairs though.

Yeah for a full TAS... In the Original mode, First quest use warps to worlds 4 and 8 and beat the game, Second quest don't use warps but defeat every enemy and defeat ALL Bowser's, get all secrets (hidden 1-up, beanstalk to coin heaven, firework show, etc.) Get at least 300,000 points. Challenge mode get all red coins, Yoshi eggs, and target scores. Maybe do You vs. Boo for the fastest times? And do the lost levels for last.

Well would it be target scores, or highest possible scores? The target scores are usually a little less than what you could get if you were perfect, and I think highest scores would be more impressive and give more to compete over, maybe.

However, the end of the staircase is closer to the flagpole and that's what matters.

It should be noted that on some levels, highest score means skipping red coins. So a 100% run would not be the same as a high score run, unless levels were repeated. High Score run of first 4 Bowser Castles from PersonOnEarth; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU9G-o1Jvqs He has a You vs Boo 1-3 and 2-1 run too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_dp150r7x8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLjA4Uzwizw

Oh, I forgot to think of that. I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing levels repeated, but other people might.

Well, as far as 100% goes, to get the Toad Medal, you need to fill up the Challenge Meter, which would include going above and beyond the minimum high score - this would probably only mean that a few levels would need repeating, as I think the skills of a TAS would generally put the score wayy up there. Then again, there are some hard to do/impossible things for a TAS, if you want all the medals/pictures - like trading high scores with another player or playing Vs. mode. Glad to see some TASing done here, though...I love this game.

I can't imagine actually integrating linking into a TAS like this without it breaking the pace horrifically...Personally I think getting all 3 medallions on all 24 levels (red coins, score, yoshi egg) is complete enough, and would make for a very entertaining TAS.

As I'm sure most of you know, The Toad High Score medal for Challenge Mode can be acquired several times over. The Bowser Castle levels are rather minimalistic, containing very little to intract with, so the score for these levels would not be much higher than the expectancy score. The most interesting and entertaining TAS of this game for me would be one attempting to achieve the highest score possible for every level in Challenge Mode. Making it a requirement to find the 5 Red Coins and getting the Yoshi Egg for each level would give it more of a walthrough-feel for me. Locating the items isn't really all that difficult.

That said, this games equvilant of that infinate Koopa Shell Stomping trick could get old very fast... Besides, even if that trick can not be abused in the majority of levels, would pure high scores not be beter in the original SMB? If you are going to run a port, why not highlight its additions? You would not run the GBA version of Yoshi's island and not do the extra levels would you?

Oh right, maybe you could earn the highest score for a full game completion in the process of unlocking challenge mode.

A dull point to make is that the Challenge Mode is an addition in itself. Finding the coins and the eggs in the levels isn't particularly taxing. The same can be said for the matching the pre-defined high scores, but tweaking out the route for maximising points and attempting to combine all the elements into one score-perfect run for each level is fairly challenging, and something I would like to see done. Granted, many levels won't go without the fair amount of repetitive routines, but on the whole I think it offers a creative, different approach to the levels we are so familiar with. I would much rather see excessive turtle stomping and whatnot done here, where it's actually accounted for and encouraged, than in any other mode. It is likely be more interesting for those who have attempted this themselves, of course. Seeing how this is a Mario game I'm still somewhat surprised that this type of run hasn't already seen the light of day. ;-)

I myself would actually like to see all the You vs Boo levels get a TAS, but challenge mode is fine too. As far as 100% goes, you could always just call all the medals/pictures that don't require linking and go for some sort of consolation category, such as "all single cart medals/pictures"...
This is only a little obsessive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWGOrmBRie0 GBC Super Mario Bros. in 4:52.33 I made this at the time I made my PAL SMB TAS. I just stumbled across this topic so I'm posting about it now.

Maybe do a TAS on getting to the Lost Levels quicker and getting to the credits. Warp to world 3, do the 1UP trick, but this time for the 300,000 points. I recommend using the Japanese version as the Lost Levels is not unlocked until getting Game Over in the American version. It would save you about 45 seconds in the long run and be completed in under 12 minutes.

If you want to make an improvement of this game, you have to compare your input with this publication. Your input mustn't be slower! Use information in that submission to make an improvement and try to find new tricks. Good luck!
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

You should use the same emulator that the published TAS used. You can find it here (VBA v24 svn480).
