Post subject: How much new material is left?

We currently have 200+ NES movies, ~100 SNES movies, ~70 Genesis movies, and about 70 movies for the remaining 4 consoles. Except for GBA, which still has some games being produced for it (not to mention a HUGE untapped library of TASable games), how many movies of new, unique games do you think are out there for each console? Since the NES is the oldest console format supported here, it would probably be easiest to estimate how many publish-worthy games are left undone, but I'm not quite sure how the best way to arrive at this estimate would be. I would assume that since they are newer platforms, the SNES and Genesis would have some percentage more, with SMS, GB/GBA and N64 having the greatest amount. Given that there are some truly crap-tastic games available for each system, what would a reasonable estimate be for new material for each console? (assuming the quality of runs published does not decrease in the future).

Reasonably, most games TASed so far have been released in US and/or Europe. Consider the amount of very weakly explored Japan-only games library for each system. I'd say there are at least 50, most likely more, games to be TASed on NES alone.

I'm surprised there are half as many SNES movies as there are NES. Both systems have comparably sized libraries. I'm also surprised that apparently, out of some 800 NES games, nearly a quarter have been worth TASing. So, I'd expect another 20-40 NES, but it would be reasonable to expect around 100 for SNES... Unless there's an appreciable difference in overall quality between the two libraries, that is.

Indeed! For example, here are some VERY awesome Japan-only Genesis games: King Colossus (J) Magical Taruruuto-Kun (J) Mamono Hunter Yohko - Makai Kara no Tenkosei (J) Monster World IV (J) Super Fantasy Zone (J) Twinkle Tale (J) None of those would fail at Workbench. For Genesis, there are still at least 100 games worth a try, but some of them have better SNES counterparts. I don't know about the other systems, but I believe they have more games worth TASing than Genesis.

NES TASing has existed for longer and thus has an older history. I suppose that an additional reason might be that SNES games tend to be much longer and be much more difficult to TAS (because of all the possible variation). SNES games also usually have less bugs and glitches to exploit.

Does anyone have any statistics on how many movies are 'new' as in, do not obsolete an old movie, vs. the number of obsoleting movies? It seems to me, that the majority of submissions and publications are on 'old' material. Thus, it isn't a lack of new games, its a lack of interest in doing them.

I think the next logical step is support for arcade TASes. The arcade has a huge library of great games to be tapped. But of course, talk is cheap.

Part of the benefit of arcade games is that they're meant to be very fast-paced and quick. I'm honestly suprised better support hasn't been out, but I'm not sure if the MAME license allows it. (I hear a lot of bad things about it...) To that end, I'm suprised at the general lack of GB/C TASes. There are a few, but it just seems like there really isn't a lot of variation in them (Oh look, more Rockman/Megaman TASes...), and it had plenty of games. GBA, especially, seems really under-utilized.
