Fred and Barney are out there platforming, racing and throwing rocks so that Fred can become Bedrock's new Grand Poobah. Since there's nothing in it for Barney, he takes it easy and leaves all the action for his pal.

Game description

In this game, one throws rocks to determine the number of steps to advance on the map. I manipulate the throws and get the result I want by holding the X button. This also sends me sliding in a preferred direction on stage 3.

Stage 1 - Bedrock

We start by going to the bonus level which has a fixed duration of 10 seconds. Fred then picks a fight with two gorillae while Barney goes to the amusement park. I finish one of the gorillae a bit slowly to get 89 on the timer and a shorter bingo sequence at the end, since this is the only area where I will end with the timer ending in 9. Then it's time for a foot race. Turboing Y keeps Fred running as fast as he can, and I jump a lot to avoid losing speed in the mud. I manipulate Betty away so that Barney can sneak past her and onward to stage 2.

Stage 2 - Magmarock

Fred stops at the cafe, but finds out that he isn't hungry. Meanwhile, Barney decides to take a hot bath. Unfortunately, the bathing technology in the stone age isn't so advanced, so he develops a sixth degree burn. Next we see some platforming action. Jumping gradually reduces the speed, so I try to minimize the time spent jumping. But I jump at the bottom of the two slopes to get some extra speed. Then, after some maneuvering to get over the lava pit on the rock, there's another race up ahead. I use two different turning techniques here. One involves releasing the D-pad every 8th frame, and the other is more complicated but turns faster with a slightly lower forward driving speed. It consists of not pressing Y for a frame, and releasing the D-pad 8 frames later while pressing Y twice in a row and then releasing it twice before switching to turbo again and then repeating this pattern every 16 frames.

Stage 3 - Snowrock

This stage begins with another race, this time on skates. There's nothing new here, it's a very straightforward race after I sneak past the other guy and it works just like the car race. Fred wins a hammer which he has to give to the guy standing at the beginning, and then they can go on.

Stage 4 - Junglerock

I go to a log jumping area and an area with some rocks you have to use to get over the water, and then there is a boss. Then both Fred and Barney have to go to the bottom of the map to complete it. Barney turns around and takes the left path since there is a normal level where the boss was.

Stage 5 - Caverock

This map has two parts. In the first part, I go to area 4, 7 and 10. The first has a lot of waiting, but nothing can be done about that. Then there is a area with deadly rocks. I tried to zip past them, but it's impossible. The last of the bunch is a long vertical level. Once again, both Fred and Barney have to reach the end of the map to continue. I could have saved around 17 seconds of in-game time by going to area 3, 6, 8 and 11 but testing showed that it's slower in real time. In the second part, I go to area 1 and then area 4 which are the shortest ones. With some careful jumps I barely get past the rising platforms and don't have to wait for them. I get some speed from running downhill in area 1 but I can't keep it because the ceiling is too low. The game ends when both people get to the left side.

a weak yes vote, I don't think that it was a good game choice. It was barely entertaining and it just seems that I could have done almost the same thing without frameadvance. I mainly watch it in fast foward.

This has got to be one of my favorite SNES games. However I was a little disapointed to find that there was almost no game play involved in this movie. It's like watching Mario Party without the mini games. The levels you did play, you played well, but most of them are very short and very straight forward, and just like ZeXr0 stated, most could have probably been done without frame advance. I'm going to have to say "Meh" leaning towards No.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of the time is spent walking on the map. The levels probably look easier than they really are, though. The sharp turns in the races are impossible in real time, and certain jumps are very hard to pull off without frame advance. The timing of jumps also matters a lot in achieving a decent overall horizontal speed.

Heh. Yeah, after watching the latest Rockman & Forte run, I was expecting Fred to violate some walls in those first cave levels. It wasn't bad, but I can't imagine wanting to sit through this again, so I give it a Meh.

I tried running this game, a while ago, but got bored at some point. The gameplay was not bad and luck manipulation looked good. This movie does seem slow but it is close to be the fastest way to do it so i'll put a yes on it. Nice run!

I'm going to have to agree on the meh vote - the optimal solution does not appear to be particularly challenging to achieve (even with luck manipulating the dice rolls, etc.)

Who cares if it was challenging or not. The guy did the game as fast as possible. Do we really have to break the game to have it published? I say there was enough effort on this run. Give the guy some creds!

What I'm getting at is that the final result does not look particularly impressive given the nature of the game - the ways to get through the game as quickly as possible are obvious and therefore there's nothing particularly unexpected about the run.

True but it is also often that nothing unexpected happens but still the run gets published? I think that if we publish this run then it will be easier to have something unexpected happening for the reason that if someone beats this run, he will have to do something pretty spectacular i think. Anyway, still voted yes on this one :)

I went and put myself up to watching this... And while the run itself was done well, I do not think an 'as fast as possible' movie would be best for this game. In fact, I doubt that this game can make for a sufficiently entertaining TAS at all. I can't exactly place my finger on why. Maybe the amount of delay where there's no control to actually MAKE funny things possible (I'm assuming no input display here)? Considering this, I'm going to have to give this a Meh vote. If you decide to try the game again to make a run more entertaining, I suggest a 'playaround' video with the strangest things you can come up with, rather than going for pure speed. (TAS does not have to mean 'tool-assisted SPEEDRUN' - it can also mean 'tool-assisted SILLINESS', and in some games that's a better option.)

So true! This could work since the ingame is more based on speed. But i was wondering without derailing. Why is there a Meh vote? Shouldnt there only be a Yes & NO vote? What happens if the Meh wins? Its taken as a No? Anyway... What Frosty said.

I think the 'meh' vote is like putting in a white ballot. It shows that you're choosing not to vote rather than just being lazy.

Not to further derail it, but I think the 'meh' votes are there for the sake of the confidence equation. 'Yes' or 'No' being a confident vote, and 'Meh' meaning that the voter is not confident they can make a decision. Since I can't yet follow the equation listed on the bottom of the page listing submissions well, I base this meaning of 'Meh' on how low the confidence rating for THIS run is. Consider that the run's votes at the time of this post are evenly split between 'Yes/No' and 'Meh'. The 50-50 split between confident decision and not is very close to what the formula gave in this case. I'll stop now.

The map parts not interesting at all, and seem to dominate the movie content. The platforming parts are nice & entertaining. I wish there were more of them. I loved that you managed to lap the guy at the last second in the 1st race. Other than that though, the races were uninteresting. Racing games of that nature tend to not be successful TASes because the optimal solution is to simply hug corners which is obvious to the viewer. I didn't understand Barney's role in the game at all. Is he a 2nd player? controlled by the 1st player? Whatever his purpose was, it wasn't entertainment. Also, I am sad that this isn't a 2-player simultaneous game. That might have had some interesting results in the (few) platforming levels. Overall, I have to vote no. There wasn't enough good TAS content in this movie.

I also vote no. I loved Mario Kart, but this doesn't come close. The platforming sequences weren't great either.
