This movie clears the B mode of Tetris at level 19 and height 5. At this mode 25 lines must be cleared to finish the game. The goal of this movie is to finish the game as fast as possible, without leaving any blocks on the screen. It is a 701 frame (11.68 second) improvement of Chef Stef's run.
  • B mode
  • Completes the game without any blocks left
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Manipulates luck
  • Genre: Puzzle
The main improvement is a better strategy, where more lines are completed at once. Initially, I was about 10 seconds faster, but then I noticed the number of blocks the level started with was an odd number, so it wasn't possible to clear all lines. This was very frustrating. It did mean that the actual number of blocks that you start out with was also manipulatable, which could be used in my advantage too. This is why in this movie, the tetris at the end actually clears four lines. Due to this, my second attempt was faster than my first, ending up with a 11.68 second improvement.
Enjoy :) Baxter

Very nice! Much higher score too since you completed more lines at once... I bet you can beat it though :)

Yes! I like how the luck manipulation is almost transparent to the viewer now, too.

That wasn't very nice, my movie was only just published :P I'm actually not that surprised that an improvement like this was found... This was such a simple game that I felt sure I was overlooking something. This makes me wonder, is a "4 lines at once" strategy possible? Or is it simply impossible to clear out all the garbage blocks using this process? I'm giving this a yes vote because 1) it looks cleaner, and 2) it's a great improvement (read: it crushes my movie). It's great to see this game pushed to its limits.

Simply, well done. It's a great improvement to such a short run. I really respect yours and Chef Stef's work solely. Yes vote.

Thanks for the good response :) The movie file was updated, it's 2 frames faster. Only the last few blocks are different.

Quick question here, as there doesn't seem to be a tetris thread: What memory address is score stored in?

I'll be honest with you here, I didn't use a score memory adress. I can't imagine it being more useful than the actual score that is displayed. There where two things that attributed to score (making tetrisses and holding down), and I knew for both exactly how much score would be added (see submission text). I can imagine though that there need to be at least 3 adresses to store the score.

The score addresses (plural because it would be 3 bytes long), would be useful for running basicbot on tetris.

Just wondering - how does this have speed/entertainment tradeoffs (as listed in its categories)?

It doesn't, it completes the goals that are set as fast as possible. Thanks for noticing, speed/entertainment tradeoffs category removed for this movie.

No probs. :-) I'll let you know if I notice any other mislabels. Btw, it is a good TAS and even though I'd only just watched the 40-line Tetris DX movie, I was still shocked when it started - wondering what you were up to. I guess it's the presence of things like that that separates TASs from human speedruns. I also liked the luck manipulation, made obvious by the ingame counter. Around the half-way mark though (in terms of score) I found it started to get repetitive - obviously there's micro-variation in how the pieces are placed but it wasn't viscerally exciting like seeing big combos in another game that I can just keep up with. I liked the colour changes when levels changed at the end.

Level 19 on the PAL version is actually faster than on the NTSC version. Can't wait for the next run to be played on the PAL version.
