Submission Text Full Submission Page
Uses FCEU rerecording v15.
This movie completes the B-mode of Tetris at level 19-5 in 51 seconds. The goal for this movie was to clear all blocks on the playing field in the shortest time. A few other notes:
  • Almost every block is manipulated (it was necessary for most of the TAS).
  • I chose music 2 because I like it a little better :)
I wasn't sure whether this run was too short to submit, but in the end I thought it might be interesting enough to publish. I'm sure some people, at least will enjoy watching this movie.

I'm setting this to cancelled because of a new trick discovered by alden to remove the pausing (and make the movie much more entertaining in the process).

NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots of this movie and placed them here. Here goes! Feel free to clean up the list.

Very nice Tetris B run, good and organized. You show great showmanship in your TASes which encourages me to progress better showmanship in my TASes. Yes vote.

The manipulation was so heavy it got pretty disturbing. Still, the run is impressive, and I don't see a reason to not publish it. Good work.

Facts: Pauses 34 times (as far as I could comprehend) Drops 53 blocks, 11 of which were █ █ █ █ blocks Clears 25 lines (if that wasn't already obvious)

I like how you didn't just beat the game, but you cleared everything off the screen in doing so. That's just SOOO a nice touch. YES vote.

Playing the movie back again, I think I can see how the constant pausing interferes with watching the movie... I'm going to try and make a new version with less manipulation (but I don't know how successful it will be, so I'm going to leave this submission here for now).

I read the submission text, and I watched the movie... but what are the exact goals of the movie? (As in, what would someone need to do to obsolete this movie?)

Goals of the movie: Clear the most difficult level in a B-type game (19-5). Clear all blocks in the level. Finish with a Tetris. Fast as possible.

^That's good enough for me. Yes vote. I'm inspired to make a hack of this game that drops random subliminal messages in place of "PAUSE", so during TASes you'll be compelled to murder your parents or eat at joe's or something.

Those aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Special sauce indeed.

Okay, I tried to make a better version (read: less pausing), but I couldn't replicate the result of this movie without a roughly equal amount of pausing. About the choice to end with a tetris: If I didn't get a tetris (and simply got the lines any other way), there would be extra blocks remaining. As every piece that falls consists of 4 blocks, and the number of garbage blocks is preset, there is no way to avoid this except by getting a tetris. So, the "get's a tetris" goal is not necessarily arbitrary - it is in fact required* to achieve the much more entertaining goal of "clears all blocks." I hope this information clears up some of the controversy... *Note that I could simply get two 2-line clears instead of one 4-line clear to achieve the same effect. But, it would waste time from having to watch the animation twice.

Ok, I voted yes. The goal of clearing all blocks sounds strange, but makes perfect sense in this mode. It might just be the only way to make a TAS of this mode which makes sense. I do think you should edit your submission text, and delete the "I finish the run with a tetris (it wastes a little time, but I think it adds entertainment).". It appearantly didn't waste time. I think you should add a Aims for fastest time. Btw, this is a missed opportunity for a TAS of the original gameboy tetris. It also has a B mode where something similar is possible. Now, a there is no real objective for that game to make it distinct of the other tetris TASes... Too bad, since I kinda was hoping for a TAS of that game.

Okay, submission text edited. I guess I wasn't thinking hard enough about whether getting the tetris saved time, but it's fixed now.

If you want to make a version with luck manipulation without pausing, try just waiting (with the game unpaused) before holding down. I think that works to manipulate luck. If not, never mind. I enjoyed the movie enough to vote yes, by the way.

I found it a bit disturbing that you paused every five seconds. It gave me a headache. And couldn't you save a few frames, because you mentioned that you changed the music. Other than that I liked it. Let me think whether to vote meh or yes.

I'm halfway between yes and meh, closer to yes. It's Tetris, you beat it fast, but the pauses were constant and sometimes seemed longer than necessary compared to the published Tetris movie.

If you don't change the music, does that change the rng to be more manipulation friendly? What about delaying a piece's landing? Either way, I enjoyed it so yes.

First of all, the music change wasted 1 frame, not very much in the grand scheme of things... Regarding the pausing, I agree that it gets a little intrusive at times. I wasn't sure if I should submit this run because of all the pausing, but I decided to submit it anyway to hear what viewers had to say about it.

Hmm, I'll have to investigate that... since I'm not going for a high score anyway, it won't matter that much whether I hold down all the time (unless it starts to waste a lot of time from the blocks moving slower).
