Hi all. Pretty new here, but I've been lurking like forever. So what happened to this game? I would be very interested in seeing this game mastered to perfection. It might be a more entertainment-oriented run than a speed-run if I was to do it. But I really need to know whether or not someone would actually consider watching it, and whether or not a pure entertainment run would fit the concept for this site? I have never made a TAS before, nor do I know how to do one, but I've checked out the FAQ's a couple of times and I'm a quick learner so, yeah... I just recently bought it from the Wii shop, just to get a little of that nostalgic feel - and I can already honestly say that with some luck, one can do all sorts of crazy shots; bouncing the ball off of a tree or cactus and into the hole (I nearly managed to do that just by playing on the console!), doing all kinds of crazy albatross shots, and just generally make it a fun, but in consequence not a speedy, run. Even if most people are opposed to such a run I might just do one afterall - if anyone is interested in seeing the run I will upload it and PM the link. Oh, and sorry for the old bump but I've read that it's better to bump rather than making a brand new topic
Here is your treeshot ;) At any rate, I would be interested in seeing a TAS for this. I think a movie aiming for entertainment could work for this... when going for speed, on would probably need to unlock metal mario somehow to get the absolute best scores... which would be problematic. If you decide to do this, good luck on it :)

That´s-a wonderful! In fact, you have some very interesting clips on your youtube channel, Myles. Have you considered doing a TAS yourself? I haven't been planning much so far. I'm actually currently stuck with my own theory, that a speedrun can always be better; a speedrun can always be obsoleted... but the thing is, an entertainment run CAN'T be obsoleted. How can you "beat an entertainment-run without the speed-factor? You just can't. Perhaps in hindsight Mario Golf, or ANY kind of "competitive based" (sports)game, just isn't cut out for a TAS :/

Thank you. That's a common question. I consider TAS now and then, but just playing on console has gone so well for me that I haven't found a reason to switch, not yet anyway. I agree with you. Just when you think a run is maxed out, someone finds a huge new time saver and the run is obsoleted again.

Hello everyone, I am the little new guy and I decided to probably make a TAS of Mario Golf as my first one. Now, before I start, here is THE question: what do you want to see in that TAS? Some things I could do: -Whole tournament and aim for entertainement (and hoping to get 1500 points with first 5 courses to unlock the last one). -Speed golf and aim for ingame/real time. -Mini-golf and aim for fastest time or entertainement. -Ring challenges -Something else? So yeah, I would like to get your comments on what YOU would like to see, and what would make an acceptable TAS. I decided to TAS the first hole of the first course, for fun, for understanding TASing techniques and for understanding game's mechanics. Here's the .m64: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/757843073/Playing%20Around.m64 I would like if you could check if my video works and if my technique wasn't too bad. Some things I saw while doing that quick run (well not that much 672 rerecords): -Code input to get all characters (and 5/6 courses) is really annoying to enter. I haven't tested everything, but fastest way I found is to hold each button for 5 frames and release for 1 frame. So: V,V,V,V,V,,V,V,V,V,V,,<,<, ... -Wind is hardly manipulable. The manipulation is done by pressing start at a different frame at the press start page, and by navigating in menu items. Though, even by manipulating, you often fall on the same wind. In about 20 tests, I got the wind I used in that test once, a 9m front wind twice and the rest was a 17m front-side wind. If anyone finds a reliable way to manipulate it, you'll be my hero. -I first thought there are a load of different shots you can take from a given position. You can change clubs, change shot power and change alignment (big with joystick and small with direction pad). Then, I noticed it wasn't true. There were in fact WAY TOO MUCH positions, when I remembered you can hit the ball at different positions by holding Z. 10000 different positions of that too, for each of the previous. So yeah, testing them all by hand would be pretty futile. Even with a bot it would take forever I think. -The game is really cheap. Look at my failed chip in frame advance to see what I am talking about. I posted the run with the failed shot to show that purpose. Yeah, the ball fell in the hole, but not. -I would need a good video plugin (with settings preferably) for that game. I don't know much about them, and only finding some plugin took me 20 minutes earlier and it has some minor graphical bugs. So yeah, that's all I have to say for now, so any comments on whatever pertaining to that run would be appreciated.

As I've said quite a few times I think in this thread, I would certainly be interested to see a TAS of this movie. If you can unlock all characters by using a code, I say go for it. It would certainly be nice to see the best play with the best character. It's hard to say what the best goals for such a movie would be. Speed golf might be nice, as it's easy to compare and compete with one another. Ring shot might also be nice, I remember having quite a hard time to complete some the the challenges there. This might also allow some crazy shots. I don't think minigolf would be really interesting. I think the movie that miles posted on youtube where all minigold holes are completed in one shot shows all there is to show. Nothing particularly impressive that a TAS can do with this mode I think. I was also wondering if it's possible to manipulate or change the camera view of the shot. I know I like the shot where the ball it tracked from behind best, as it shows best what's going on. If possible it would be nice to get that camera angle as often as possible. Either way, good luck! I hope you can produce something submittable :)

I thought about it some more and I think I will go with the ring shots. Speed golf is easy to compare but I think it will lead to a pretty boring TAS as it will almost always use the same technique. Also, the run won't last forever that way. Also, I think I will also go for entertainment rather than brute speed. I will aim for less number of shots, but I will try to make them the most enjoyable I can. I know that movie won't be really comparable, but like I said, speed isn't a good goal is such a game. I'll see what I can do with the camera. I know the wind is hardly manipulable, so I have no idea if it is going to be doable. Input from other people would be greatly appreciated, as I am making the run for you, not only for me.

Well in that case, take a look at these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JwvyqlExK4&feature=PlayList&p=9CFD13D81FD608D9 EDIT: Also, you might wanna use this link: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=9CFD13D81FD608D9 Youtube playlists just don't work the way they used to...

I haven't seen a lot of action going on with Mario Golf on TASVideos. I didn't even think there was a forum on this. I've recently become interested in maybe TASing this game. I've seen some TASes of Mario Golf on YouTube. I've find that the most optimal ones were uploaded by TempestWay. He has uploaded several. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pTbwteferk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPEUqavlIJ4 These are just the first two that I happened to find.

I seems speed golf with Metal Mario would be the best option. Though you'd have to do a run to unlock first. Edit: Also, the fast-forward feature should be used when watching the shots land.

I don't know if the unlocking run is necessary, Weatherton. D-Pad Down, D-Pad Down, D-Pad Left, D-Pad Left, D-Pad Left, D-Pad Right, D-Pad Right, D-Pad Right, C-Down, C-Down, C-Left, C-Left, C-Left, C-Right, C-Right, C-Right is a code you can use at the "Press Start" screen to unlock all of the unlockable characters, including Metal Mario. Also, why not tournament mode?

I have a WIP to show. Actually, it's more like an "old branch", since I recently restarted. I got over 2/3 of the way through the game about a year ago before sort of fizzling out. I didn't use the code to unlock everything, as I feel the game is more interesting without it. Metal Mario allows too many Par 4 Hole-in-Ones, which is theoretically more impressive but in practice is just more monotonous. Having to contend with the actual terrain between the tee and the hole more often showcases more gameplay. The goal is to collect all Tournament Mode trophies. Maple Unlocks after 50 holes, I do the courses out of order because Maple can save a stroke on Koopa Park 17, but surprisingly can't get fewer strokes than Baby Mario on Yoshi's Island. Part 1: Toad Highlands Part 2: Shy Guy Desert Part 3: Yoshi's Island Part 4: Koopa Highlands Part 5: Boo Valley (first 8 holes) I recently made a breakthrough that allows much more efficient botting to find solutions for holing the ball. With the help of this bot, I restarted and already saved about 141 frames within only four holes. Restart (first 4 holes) If you want to see the movie files and scripts, They're on Github. EDIT: And I just noticed the somewhat discouraging claim emerald000 left about luck manipulation of the wind 10 years ago. Well, that's just flat-out wrong. It's a frame-based RNG that can be manipulated simply by stalling in the previous hole. There seem to be certain times the RNG doesn't roll forward (such as the menus, and the leaderboard screen) but it's not that hard to manipulate.

Why didn't you get a Hole in One in Hole 3? Is it just not possible to do?
