I loved this game as a kid. My mom may have been one of the most 1337 people on the planet at this game (I think I am the first person ever to type that) and it was the first game I ever enjoyed watching someone else play. I'm delighted to find out it exists for GB. I'm going to start a run for it right away. There are 99 levels, but on the plus side, you can luck-manipulate where the crystals are, so the levels would be completed fairly quickly.

I think it'd be too repetative... plus too much time on bonus screens. This is probably better suited for a playaround.

N008 question: What's a playaround? On another note, I think this could stay interesting for at least 30, if not 50, phases. New enemies keep popping up. At phase 25, there's an infuriating enemy I call "fido", because he looks like a dog head and follows you everywhere! However, when you're moving slow, you can fire a shot which stays there, like a mine, and blows up something following you.

[sarcastic]Thank you for your relevant post.[/sarcastic] I think the run will be either 30 or 45 phases, more likely 45. I figure I'll map out the fastest route to all the crystals, then figure out what frames I should shoot at to take out enemies. I figured out a way to turn on a dime. Suppose at frame x you're going up, and need to go down. x: ^ x+1: ^> x+2: > x+3: \/> x+4: \/

There are 2 potential goals this movie could have (beyond "aim for fastest time). 1. Kill as few enemies as possible without wasting time. 2. Kill as many enemies as possible without wasting time. Personally, I like #1, because it makes the player seem totally indifferent to the enemies. Traveling around, totally untouched, and with only the occasional shot fired? Oh yeah...

If you're going for as few enemies, you should do a full pacifist run, with no bullets fired, which IMO would be much more impressive. I played the original of this game and loved it, and I think if done right it could be very entertaining.... but you'd have to throw a lot of effort into entertainment (ie tight circles around enemies while getting crystals, getting a long trail of those follower enemies to chase you in a line, etc). I've never played the gameboy version, but if it has the giant crystals that appear every once in a while those could maybe be manipulated to appear more often and fly in a desired direction. Let me know when you have a WIP and I'll try to get you some helpful suggestions.

This is the problem with the pacifist concept: There are a bunch of enemies, starting in level 6 and in many other levels, that look like blobs of jello. They are programmed to sit their fat butts on the nearest crystal. As a result, the run would have several minutes of waiting around for the enemies to go away. I've been looking around for ways to optimize the crystal collection. My dad is a math professor, and he teaches about optimization problems, so he told me about the Traveling Salesman Problem. It seems there are some good computer programs out there that can solve the problem perfectly for up to 50 points to go to. So I'll be using those a lot (Every level, probably).

Won't this create an infinite amount of problems for each level? And I think infinity times 99 is an even bigger infinity.

I checked (I.E. asked chamale) and "there aren't infinity problems, just googleplexs". so, it could be done.

Well, obviously, it's only going to be reasonably luck-manipulated. Remember, the Pokemon Gold run would be several minutes faster if a 3/65535 chance was manipulated at one point, but that would be ridiculously hard.

You mean Pokerus? I don't believe you one moment. At most it's maybe a few seconds.

Maybe you are in the Ẃrong topic today. On topic to the off topic statement: Yes, I believe that you are correct. On topic: could it not be more optimized Ẃith maniplating it so the crystals appear all beloẂ you?

The probability of manipulating THAT is about 1000000000000000000000 to 1 For level 1. For the higher levels, the chance is 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 to 1. In any case, one of my goals was to not luck-manipulate crystal position because it's more entertaining that way.

Thank you for proving to us that the forum template can indeed be stretched with long numbers.
