Please read the FAQ. It is prompted in at least two places on your "post a topic/reply" form on these forums. Why? Because it answers questions, of course! Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) -> Which codecs are used Also: Next time, try to post a better thread topic. I would have suggested "Which codec is used?" for this topic. "Question" does not help searching this thread in a list of topics.

Thanks Bisqwit and Zurreco. EDIT: I see what codecs, but where do I get them?

Where, exactly does it say where to get H264? I see X264, but that seems to be a DOS-thing. Anyone care to shed some light on this?

H264 is a standard. A definition, how video is encoded. It is words, graphs and documents. X264 is an implementation of that standard. It is the program code which can be installed and utilized. There indeed exists a console program about X264, but what you want is a codec (a service usable by a player), not a program. I assume you are running a Windows operating system on a Pentium-class computer. Could be wrong, but it is a fairly common choice. In that case, you should look up the "Windows solution" on that page: http://tasvideos.org/CodecProblems.html#windows_solution_ffdshow_ . As for a player (which is required to utilize the codecs installed in the system), try one of these Windows players: http://tasvideos.org/CodecProblems.html#windows_

I'm curious: Whatever makes you think that?

x264.exe launches cmd, probably confused that with dos.

You have to use x264 in mencoder or it does nothing by itself.

Since I got a new motherboard (same processor) and new (better) graphics card, I'm now getting random pauses in the (edit: any) video occasionally. The sound does fine, and the video catches up after about a second, but it happens pretty frequently. This didn't happen to me before. I'm using Media Player Classic and ffdshow 12/30/3006. Does anyone know if ffdshow has a place to control its CPU priority, or have any other ideas that might relate to this problem? Thanks in advance.

that's probably because in 3006, the retro-compatibility of ffdshow will be lost, and that your (yet new) computer isn't enough for this late future. on a more serious note : try to deactivate every option, except "post-treatment", and set this last one to the minimum. if every video on your pc lags, it might be a driver or codec problem. try updgrading or downgrading them.

Try using VLC media player, that seems to work very well with any video.

JXQ, devmgmt.msc, make sure your front side bus drivers are loaded properly (No yellow question mark that says SM Bus) EDIT: Well, if that fixes the problem it justifies this being my 1337th post
