If you've ever played Pikmin, you can probably imagine how cool a TAS would be for it... I've been playing Pikmin 2 a lot recently, and I can see it becoming a recommended video (when GameCube games start being normally Tool-assisted, if ever). There's so much to do in each stage, splitting up your captains could make for some pretty crazy multi tasking, and precise aiming of pikmin for killing enemies and even drawing out patterns on the ground (like spelling out words) would all add to the awesomeness. Oh, plus, there's time limits to each day, and an overall time limit in terms of days taken to complete the game. So that would be another interesting factor, minimizing the amount of days.

Have you seen the speedruns over at SDA for these games? They are very very entertaining.

Well, when there is a good function GameCube emulator, I'm sure TASes for these would be much more entertaining. :3

Considering how much I would like to see this game TASed, are we getting even close to a PS1 emulater?

There are PS1 emulators, but the games are called ISO's, and are huge in size. From what I understand, they're pretty unreliable.

I think the "bouncing pikmin trick" could be used: 1. Throw a pikmin into a wall thats just bigger than you. 2. throw the pikmin into the wall. 3. if you did it right, the pikmin will get stuck in the wall an reptedly go through the throwing animation in the wall. 4. if you put your circle on a enemy, the enemy dies because the game thinks that you're still throwing pikmin. How to get out of it: 1. actually throw a pikmin 2. change captain 3.leave the current level It works on my gamecube so I don't think I'm crazy.

I might have a look at doing a Challenge Mode TAS, see how many pikmin i can make XD (not for submission, more just for the fun of it) By the way, is challenge mode only unlocked after youve passed the game? i cant remember.

Challenge mode is unlocked when you get a certain key in the main game, it is in one of those holes that you go down in. I can't remember if it was a key, but it's an item.

That's how you unlock it in Pikmin 2 (a key in Citadel of Spiders), but he was referring to Pikmin 1's challenge mode. Pikmin 1's is unlocked when you collect all three types of pikmin in the main game. Also, hasn't every area other than Distant Spring been maxed already?

Yea, in theory every area has been maxed save for distant spring, BUT it might still be possible to get extra pellets from the flint beetles with a bit of luck manipulation so who knows? from what i remember the current distant spring record is 620

I love the Pikmin series. These games definitely need to be TAS'd. While getting every piece and treasure is great, it'd be interesting (for me at least) to see someone managing to harvest every possible collectible (treasure and beast) in Pikmin 2 (if only just for laughs).

What do you guys mean by maxed, and what does '620' go by? I know the real-time records can be improved with TASing, if you mean number of days then I would understand. A Pikmin run here should not use just the 50 minimum required, and use as many as beneficial, right? Even if it still takes 9 days, it seems like the real time could be improved by a good amount with a larger force. There's plenty of time to farm more pikmin on the second day while the other 24 reds are destroying the gate at the begining.

In Pikmin 1's Challenge Mode, your score is based on how many pikmin you grow. Every area except Distant Spring is already maxed because they get every pellet/carcass in the area.

Exactly. And with tool-assistance, i think maxing distant spring would be a real possibility.

I wonder if you can finish all of the forest of hope on your first day there in a TAS...

I wouldn't mind seeing TASes of these two games once the Dolphin Emulator is stable enough. Who knows when that's gonna be, though.

pressing A while running in both games gives you a small speed boost, I think this can be abused in TASing.

I want to see how fast you can get all 30 ship parts. I've seen it done in 9 game days on SDA. Could it be done any faster? Pikmin 2, Get all the treasure (including the dumbbell by needing 100 purple Pikmin). I'm demanding a run faster than 8 game days (SDA record). Maybe 7. The Challenge mode appears after getting the key from the Hall of Spiders. Get all perfect with 2 players. The "e-Reader+" levels can only be done with the Japanese version of the game.

You can't get a run faster than 8 days by "going faster" (if you watch the run, every day ends long before sunset). For the first 5 days, you get a new type of Pikmin each day, the last of which are Blues, and every area requires Blue Pikmin to complete. The only way I can see it going lower is either by A. Getting to Emergence Cave on Day 1, or B. Getting Blues on Day 3; neither of which personally seem that likely.

I'm sure it's possible to finish in 8 or even 7 days if a good enough route is used. A one day completion of either distant spring or forest navel seems fairly likely. Also, if my testing is correct, it appears that it is slower to walk diagonally instead of completely staight forward. At least this appears to be the case in Pikmin for GC.

It doesn't seem possible. The thing is that, in total game time, it can certainly be reduced. But, with the ways days are made, it's really hard to lower it. Unless there's a TAS exclusive trick that makes completing certain areas in a single day, Pikmin can't be completed in less than 9 days.

I'm also very interested in Pikmin 1. Everyone says it is very unlikely to beat the game in less than 9 days, but with a tightly optimized TAS it might be barely possible. I'm not planning to make any TASes for now, though. Good luck to anyone who tries it!

Well, this is an interesting development. Perhaps sub-9 completion wasn't as unlikely as we thought. Link to relevant post

They are even talking about a possible 7 day completion. Maybe TAS could get that. Interesting. The question is would something like this even be worth it for real time or wold it be a seperate game time run?

While watching that video in the thread, I kept pointing to the screen shouting 'AWESOME!'. Glad to see a cool glitch like that being used.
