Konami's little Contra game beaten in 11:06 with FIRE! ;) 272 frames (4 seconds!) faster than my cancelled submission.
  • VBA-rerecording-14 used (works fine in latest version)
  • Used "Allow Left+Right / Up+Down" option.
  • No password and warp used.
  • Abused programming error with L+R / U+D option.
  • No hit taken.
  • Aim for fastest time.
This is Konami's little platform shooter game released in 1991 for Gameboy, it's just the same as Contra except for the title. There's 5 stages to go through and 3 weapon power-ups; I chose Fire Shot because it's the strongest weapon.
I decided to go over this game again, I knew it was improvable because I didn't get around to look at enemies' health in memory. Now I did this time ;) And also I ensure that it's fastest possible.
This new improvement is 272 frames (4 seconds!) faster than my cancelled submission. The area where I improved was less jumping and viewing enemies' health. The jumping cost 1 frame behind. Viewing enemies' health helped me to find when to begin shooting and make sure shots are landing each time.
Thanks to hero of the day for his comment on L+R / U+D glitch, and thanks to Nitsuja for his modified VBA.
Here's the table again; the timing is done for each stage when the screen turns white when a stage is completed and the end of movie.

Enjoy the movie.

Nach: There is a place or two in the movie which looks sub optimal, but on testing myself I see it isn't. Accepted.
Flygon: Clearly this movie wasn't so optimal. Added in a YouTube module.

After the elevator on level 1, is there a good reason to not stay on the right? Does the boss activate on screen scolling instead of character position? You are ahead of the screen after some other elevators.

Aye, every bosses activates on fixed screen position, it doesn't matter where the character is (as long as he's between center and right end of screen), and start moving as soon as elevator event has unlock vertical camera scroll. If I wasn't after the Fire Shot upgrade, I could stick on right edge. The other elevator you speaking, are you refering to the one on stage 5? It was done in order to get to the robot boss as close as possible so I can kill quicker.

Hm, in the final level there's one point where the game lags from too many enemies because hatches in the ceiling spawn flying "cells", wouldn't turning around for one frame and killing them be faster?

I checked, it's not lagging there. It's the same pixel moving as if there's no single enemy on the screen.
