I think this game would make for a great TAS. The graphics are better than any other golf simulation on the NES and it stars Mario, whats not to love. I am currently working on this game and have the first two holes of the U.S. course complete. I am wondering if anyone else shares my enthusiasm for this game, do you think it will be accepted or is this too boring of a game for a TAS? http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/663/NES%20Open%20Tournament%20Golf%20%28U%29.fcm

me, i love this game and would love to see a TAS of it. But, this would also probly be boring by some. Things to spice it up: Amazing shots from the rough Long Shots that are over OB Amazing shots from deep sand.

Off the tee, into the rough. Out of the rough, into a bunker. Followed by an amazing chip in for eagle? I'd watch it ;D I had a go at NES golf a while back. I'd like to see it so you never have to putt, if that's possible...

It would be boring for me. I suggest maybe you can manipulate the wind to come favorable, or maybe the wind is fixed for each level :P

I would love it! I played this game a lot as a kid and even though I don't like sport at all, this game kept me playing for hours ;) Go for it!

Sounds like a nice idea for a "run" (can you call it a "run" if it's a golf game?) - this naturally isn't the kind of game that you'd expect an entertaining TAS movie for, but that just means it'll be even nicer when you *do* manage to pull that off. ^_~

The first 7 holes are now complete. All par 3s are hole-in-ones, all par4s are eagles, and all par 5s are albatrosses. The 8th hole may present a challenge because it is too long to reach the pin in two shots, which means I may get an eagle instead of an albatross. Does anyone know if TAS of this game would have to include the U.K. and Japanese courses, or would a run through of the U.S. course be good enough? Heres the run so far: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/669/NES%20Open%20Tournament%20Golf%20%28U%29.fcm

I think all three courses should be included. Else it just half done in my opinion. And also I really would like to see this done! So keep it up! Awesome.

Seconded, on both accounts. You should probably include all courses, and yes, it does look great so far! :)

The U.S. Course is now complete. I will do all three courses like you guys suggest, so just 36 more holes to go. The movie so far: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/674/NES%20Open%20Tournament%20Golf%20%28U%29.fcm

That's pretty awesome. I wanted to do this one myself, but I got impatient with it. I know it's possible to get a hole-in-one on the first hole if you manipulate the wind to 9 north. after that you did a great job. it'd be great to see this finished.

I dont think this run will be published if I ever finished it. Its get very repetative after a few holes, and there are 54 holes in all. There is a run of another golf game in submissions, and it doesnt seem like it will be published. If you wanted to take over from where I left off, you can use my movie for the U.S. course and finish the other courses yourself.

Unfortunatly I have to agree with you. I just happen to like golf a lot...kicking serious butt like that does something for me. But I don't think a run like this would ever get published...

I wouldn't so sure about that - about this one not being published, that is. There's quite a bunch of videos that are repetitive and boring on the site already; personally, I think that things like Megaman X3 are simply unwatchable, for example. Of course, that's just my opinion, but the same thing goes for golf games etc., too - when someone says "this is boring and repetitive", it's just their opinion. And the "run" so far certainly matches the site's purpose when it's described as "movies of classic console games being played extraordinarily, using an emulator as a tool to overcome human limitations of skill and reflex": Classic console game: check. Played extraordinarily: check. Using an emulator as a tool: check. Overcoming human limitations: check. Why shouldn't it be published?

I've also done a few unfinished TAS on the Nintendo Golf game or whatever. This sounds a lot more fun to watch though, I'd love it for sure!

Old thread... But yes, please do submit it! I'm too lazy to watch it as it is but I guess it's great. I tried to do a run for Hole in one golf a while back but I cancelled it since it was boring to watch and not very impressing. This seems like a great movie. Some people will probably think it's boring, but as already mentioned, opinions... There are runs published here that I personally can't stand... This however would be great to watch, not only since this is probably the one game during the 8-bit era I spent most time with.

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I'm interested in this. I watched the US course hero of the day made. I'm somewhat impressed... it seemed to me like he was going for fastest overall time. Ideally, it could be nearly a minute faster through use of fast swing speed, actual club selection, and having the ball land directly in the hole (is faster than rolling around). This might be neat for a hole or two, but it would soon get repetitive. (Before I go any further, I'd just like to note holes 1, 8, 12, and 18 can all be improved by a stroke, with faster swing speed and better wind manipulation.) Since one course wouldn't be a long movie anyway, I'd suggest doing a playthrough of a course trying to make lots of "dynamic" shots, for instance, crazy draws, sand saves, or maybe aiming for an extremely obscure spot from the tee for kicks (the tiny islands on one of the UK course holes comes to mind- can't remember the number offhand). As I've hit some rough territory on Goldeneye, and I still want to TAS something, I'll make a playthrough of one of the courses and see how it turns out. Ideally, a speedrun would be fastest time to 1,000,000$, but I can't remember if there was a code to immediately go pro, and I'm not sure if it would be possible playing perfect tournaments on all three courses (60k for win + long ball/close pin bonuses, hole in one bonuses). My father and I played the crap out of this game when I was younger, I know the game very well. Plus, I'm likely going to be up all night, I'll probably a demo course done sometime tomorrow.

Small update if anyone is interested in this (lack of updates suggests me otherwise, however...), I have the first ten holes done, 2 strokes ahead of hero's test run, and a bit more "stylish". I'm currently looking into what affects the wind for holes after the first one (first being the frame you press A or START at the initial title screen). So far it seems that the score you got on the previous hole affects whatever byte the game uses for wind on the next. Unless there's some other factor for this, I may need to start over, as with the current wind I get with eagle on the 11th, albatross on the 12th is not possible.

Nice to hear you are making progress with this run. The 2 stroke improvement over my run sounds pretty cool, I can't wait to see you own the par 5's. Btw, did you decide to go for pure speed or are you allowing for crazy ball movements on the green?

hero, I've been mostly trying for entertaining shots over speed. But, the actual club selection and start of swings are perfect to the frame. As for a WIP, I'll upload what I've got right now. It plays up until halfway through the 12th, but I'll likely end up doing the 11th over, MAYBE the tenth even. It really depends on if there are other things other than your score last hole that affect the wind on the next. A hole-in-one on 11th might not be entirely out of the question, but the pin placement needs to be more to the front of the green with favorable wind. I can't remember if that's one of the possible scenarios for the hole though. EDIT: Is WIP. 'NOTHER EDIT: I've figured out what affects the wind. It's the angle you're at when the screen changes to the mario close up for a swing. Therefore, hole ten will chane a bit (though the actual shot will be the same), and I'll play around with 11 a bit and see if the mentioned criteria for a possible hole-in-one could be met. First nine will be unchanged in the final version though.

I gotta say that this is shaping up to be a really great run. I was impressed with every par five, and the hole in 1 on the first hole was awesome. I suppose you plan on doing the japan and uk courses too?

Yes, I will be doing the other two courses as well. First Japan, then UK. Japan will be the longest course in terms of shots taken, UK the shortest. I think there is something like 3 par 4s on the UK under 320 Yards, so I might be able to break 30 strokes on that course. I've found my "motivation" again for this kinda stuff, so I doubt it'll be too long before I have another course done.

Japan Course. EDIT: Something I just noticed now, hit A after the scorecard is displayed (movie stops beforehand) and see what the course guy thinks of my -40 XD
