In short, I’ve not done any more of this run. Exams and other interests have gotten in the way but recently my motivation for TASing has been rekindled. However, I’ve decided to complete a different, shorter run before I go ahead with this. I daresay it shouldn’t take too long to finish now that I have some extra free time. That isn’t to say this game has been completely neglected. New discoveries have been made and the game’s mechanics are understood better now. There are a few other things I’d like opinions on, but they can be sorted out later. I'll get around to it eventually, honestly. :P

Thanks for responding. I sure hope you'll get around to it because I'm almost certain this would be one of the coolest TASes on the site once it's completed.

That sound glitch is pretty damn awesome. My picture is actually from a glitched-up Yoshi in a giant empty room. :P I found that most of them can be accessed from the left, right, left warp on the level select screen, after being in different 'rooms' in levels. I can't find any smvs, but I thought this was pretty funny too.

OK, seeing as I have no intention of making a non-glitched any% run for this game, I may as well post this here. It's a series of shortcuts in 6-6 which virtually skip the entire level. smv The shortcuts were not found by me; I received a private message one day from a user on this site named Romi, who showed me them. This test, however, was made by me. As for optimisation, it's pretty poor compared to current standards, but the smv does its job in demonstrating the tricks. Maybe somebody will take up the run one day? Assuming it's still a valid category...

I recently started learning TASing, and, being a YI any% speed runner myself, have taken interest in improving Spezzafer's now vastly outdated run (both in terms of entertainment, and tricks). New tricks: traditional wall jumping; spitting an enemy into the wall and bouncing on it; more 1-1 skips (2-1, 2-4, 3-1, and 4-7); arrow lift teleporting; and other basic route changes. I also tried to incorporate most of the other standard optimizations that were missing from Spezzafer's run (slope acceleration trick, hitting bottom of goal ring, pipe jumps, etc). Yoshi's Island is a game with enormous potential for showing off, and as such, another reason why I've been interested in improving the old TAS was simply for entertainment value. Blame Trihex. Unfortunately, due to the fact that this was my first TAS ever, there are a few areas where I learned how to better optimize something after the fact (such as running along the moving platforms in 1-8). Additionally, as I am only interested in entertainment value, there were a few areas where maximum speed was sacrificed to pull off various tricks (not interrupting a triple juggle, for instance, or being forced to pick up a star due to collecting a lot of red eggs). I am also uninterested in spending hundreds of hours retesting certain strategies that require large amounts of trial and error, in the interest of actually seeing a finished Yoshi's Island run (looking at you, Nxcy/Baxter! :PPPP) By the end of world 2, it is approximately 5,000 frames ahead of Spezz's old run. Hope everyone enjoys it, and huge thanks to Nxcy for teaching me basically everything I know. Speaking for myself, it would be nice if you didn't overuse the 1-1 skip, as it's boring to see the same level completed multiple times. Trading speed for entertainment is generally an accepted practice, although I do see the other side of the coin, which is that any artificial restriction on using it is arbitrary. As for your WIPs, watching them now. Could you post your SMV on DeHackEd's Microstorage script? http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php

I totally agree with you about not overusing the 1-1 skip. There's only 4, so I decided to go with them. I think 4-7 might be faster without the skip, too. If there were any more, I would have chosen not to use them. As far as I know only a handful of levels allow 1-1 warps, which is fine with me.

Very good job! I really liked the way you jumped over the second boss and pushed him to where Yoshi were suposed to fall! Keep up the good work!

Quite frankly, I'm blown away. I don't know half of those new tricks in there, and the execution of those was stunning. Please, do keep it up.

Carl, that was truly amazing. Some highlights for me: -Juggling 4 eggs -Shooting all the ghosts to form a vertical line -Eating the circular arrow block and glitching on top of it -Wall jumping antics in general It's great to see a newcome tackle such a difficult game, no less do it this well. My only concern is that you go overboard with shooting Yoshi's tongue vertically, but otherwise keep up the good work!

Juggling the four eggs across the pinwheel thingie was definitely the hardest thing I've done so far @_@ I'm determined to at least try juggling 5 at a time during one of the other autoscrollers though!

A part from the fact you take a red coin in the first castle, this is superb. Especially loved the rythm game on 1-5 :). For the red coin, you might be forced to take it, like the flower in 1-7, but I dunno. Keep up the good work !

Great run, there're many interesting tricks in addition to walljumping. I especially liked entering the flipper from opposite. And excuse me, have you mentioned vanishing Bullet Bill Shooter (in 2-7) somewhere?

Thanks for the compliments. The vanishing bullet bill shooter is just a consequence of too many sprites being on the screen at one time. This is very common in Yoshi's Island, and can happen to all sorts of things (goal rings, red coins, etc). Nxcy suggested using it there, and I adapted it with using the giant egg to create a lot of stars. I actually use it in real time during my speed runs now.
