I recently came across this site, OrganicHTML and I'm fascinated by it. On the one hand, it's a fun way to waste time by just feeding it URLs to see what you get. On the other, I'm very curious to understand why some sites produce bigger/more colorful results than others. So I was hoping some of the skilled programmers and coders here might venture a guess or two or at least have fun with it for a while.

Fascinating... My guess would be it takes into account how "deep" a page is, and lets this be expressed by the length of the stalk. It then colours the stalks by which colour is dominant on the page, letting the size of 1 stalk denote how many connections can be made from that site (e.g. links)

Interesting. It actually gives a quite good looking image from http://www3.rocketbbs.com/220/soramimi.html. Quite much everything else I tried gives just grayish small stubs. http://tasvideos.org/SuperMarioBrosTricks.html assaults the viewer.

What do flies mean? (the most flies I've seen anything get is foxsports.com) Tried slashdot but it won't work for some reason. www.walmart.com explodes and starts choking my computer... (edit: www.toywiz.com even moreso) www.wtf.com generates 2 long, near-identical branches, I wonder what about the site causes that? I also wonder, what determines the direction of the growth? Some things grow in spirals, others grow straight up for a while then branch sideways... (compare sports.yahoo.com and www.target.com) edit2: wow, this makes a neat plant: 64.233.179.104/search?q=cache:ANPxa2OxW3IJ:forums.linkinpark.com/printthread.php%3Ft%3D309489+organichtml+stalk&hl=en (it's the google cache of it, which looks way different for some reason)

I think flies might have something do with Flash, only because my friend's rather simple art page, Troutmouth, gets a fly but not much else. He also has no (I think) outgoing links, which might explain his lack of vegetation.

A similar effect (only vertical) occurs when you view my review of the movie Sin City (http://www.feitclub.com/sincity.html) which confuses me because that page is little more than black and white text with no outgoing links and very few style modifications.
