First of all I just wanna say great work on smb2... closer to perfection with each try... One thing puzzles me though...How is it possible to doublejump with Luigi the way you do in version 6...some kind of bug or what? cheers!

Bisqwit, were you the first one to find that glitch or did you read about it somewhere? If you discovered it maybe you should send an email to David Wonn about it and maybe he'll put it on his website

I discovered it by my own, but later found out that David Wonn has listed it in his glitch collection. For details, read this irc log from yesterday... <Nach> and how do you do that luigi multi jump? <Bisqwit> It works with anyone, not only with Luigi. <Bisqwit> When you jump just before an enemy so that game actually thinks you did collide with the enemy, it sets a "on ground" flag on and you can jump again any time before you start falling. <Nach> ah <Bisqwit> But the enemy you use must be not spikey - i.e. you must be able to stand on it. <Bisqwit> Otherwise it sets a "you hurt" flag instead of "on ground" flag :)

Maybe you should make a tricks video for SMB2 where you really abuse this glitch a lot to do some cool stuff. Maybe you'll even find some other glitches that can occur as side effects from this glitch.

I do that already too much in v6 and I plan to make a v7 that doesn't use it so much. (The 4-2 level would look cooler if I didn't "cheat" in it so much.) But I am going to find a way to use it in 6-3 - instead of going below the rock (via quicksand) I'm going to go above the rock. I just have to pick a shyguy, place it on a tall pillar and use the doublejump with him. It's challenging.

I wanted to give props to Genisto for his great work on this run. I also have a question. While I think I understand the "double jump" glitch, how were you able to "hover?" By that I mean the many occasions where you run off of an edge but instead of falling you simply float, like a jump. Did you just make a tiny jump or is there a trick to it? Similarly, I am not sure how to jump up vines.

It's Princess' special ability. Anyone who has played SMB2 should know that. Princess hovers when you are airborne and press A. You don't need to have jumped to do it.

You can jump from a vine when you are just about to fall from it. It could take a few tries, but it's not challenging.

I knew you could jump and hold A, of course! I didn't know it could be done at any time, jumping or not. Because of the "perfect reflexes" in these time attacks, it looks like she is simply walking on air at times.

I think that collecting the key in the jar before jumping over the hole in world 1-2, and then kill the Birdo with the key may be faster than simply wait for the egg... Introduice this tech may gain a few second for the total time, and add a new cool stuf in the video...

Last time I checked you can't carry items via doors in that game...

I tried it yesterday and it is possible... I made it on my NES game, PAL version and in Mario All-Star SNES Rom... it is possible... maybe jumping over the hole carrying the key is not doable fast with Peach but with Luigi I think it's ok...

Ok, I remembered wrong. You're right, it's being done in the 7-2 level too. Maybe it applies to other kind of items only.

I didn't tested other items and don't think that may be really usefull... but the keys always go through doors...

Finished Super Mario 2 at 8:44. Just re-doing the last level to get in an extra second. I wont have time to finish Tiny Toons until the weekend. Not sure how long the last few levels will take so I cant compare times. We'll see when I finish. [Edit by Bisqwit - moved this thread to the games forum...]

Cool, did you find any major new glitches or strategies?

Not really any new glitches, but several changes in strategy: -Used the tag team of just Toad and Luigi. -The major time saver was using Toad. Toad runs much faster while hes holding an enemy. He also picks up and throws much faster. My original intention was to make a "Toad only" run. -For 1-1, I found that the old waterfall shortcut was about 4 seconds faster than climbing all those vines. -Used Toad for 1-2. I did it just to show that Toad can do this level fast as well. Suprisingly, Toad finished this level faster than Luigi or Princess. -Finished all the bosses much faster. -Made time improvements from Genistos run on all levels except 7-1(hate this level), which we tied. Thats about it. I managed to get the time down to 8:43. Tried my hardest to get POW blocks or Starmans to the bosses, but couldnt pull it off.

I just published Sleepz's Super Mario Bros 2 timeattack in 8:43. When I started working with a timeattack for this game in January 1 2004, I had no idea that it can be done in under 9 minutes. I was long struggling to get it even under 10 minutes. Here's a brief history of what things I have discovered (or seen others discovering) at SMB2 during the making of these timeattacks, in cronological order. - Luigi is not the best character to play all levels. - Jumping from a vine speeds climbing significantly. - Holding A while falling slows down falling, especially with Luigi. - The ceiling has a nice passage that can be abused in 7-2. - Ostro's egg spitting rate must not be slowed down by throwing eggs a it. - The ceiling in 7-2 has a greater passage that can be abused a lot. - The world 6 is faster to play than the world 5, after all. - The doublejump trick - saves time in 1-2 and 7-1. - Ostro's magic ball can be grabbed in air - saves time and looks cool - A block can be put bouncing to induce damage faster. - Toad runs faster when carrying something. - The waterfall shortcut in 1-1 is faster than the vine way, after all. Plus a myriad of very local optimizations. Hmm... hope I didn't forget anything.

I just wanted to say I really dig this new run. Sleepz' use of Toad was really cool, right from the start. I loved jumping into Birdo (or is it Ostro?) and grabbing and throwing the egg almost simultaneously. Also, I'm not sure I exactly understand this "juggling" phenomenon, but it looked great on Level 6-3. Great job.

The block bounces off from the character's neck and hits the enemy once per each bounce. It was an awesome finding first applied by Genisto.

Welcome to the world of "is it a bad translation or done on purpose?" The ending and the instruction manual refer to the egg spitting creature as ostro and the ostrich looking creature from world 5 as birdo. The NES Atlus from Nintendo (collective player's guide) has them reversed. It would also make sense to call the ostrich looking creature ostro. Because of the confusion, my dad used to take care of it when telling bedtime stories. There once was a two headed bird, one head was called birdo, and the other ostro... I showed Bisqwit's first run to my little brother when it came out, and commented look how fast he beat birdo! His reply was "what does dad's old story have to do with this movie?"

I have never heard an explanation for ostro's name before. I tried to look it on dictionary (when I was a kid), but it didn't reveal anything. And until now, I didn't even know the english name of that bird, ostrich. It does make some sense. However I'll continue to use those names as they were written in the instruction manual, because that's how my brain has already hardwired them :)

Sleepz: I just saw the movie, incredable! I absolutely love it. One of the coolest movies I ever saw. A true imbodiement of Bisqwit's words "Act like you own the game". This now ranks up there with Castlevania :D

I thought of the egg-spitter as "Birdo" and the running bird as "Ostro" because that's how they were described in Nintendo Power, a "magazine" I read religiously at the time. Of course, there's also the undeniable resemblence between the running bird and an Ostrich. The egg bird, on the other hand, doesn't really look like anything. Also take note: the end credits describe the giant crab boss as "Clawglip."

I just finished level 1-1 in my SMB2 speed run and I beat Sleepz by about .5 seconds. What's even cooler is that I used Toad in 1-1 :)
