Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. with some new game modes, including a challenge mode where coins and time remaining are crucial to gaining the target score and a race mode where Mario competes against Boo to reach each level's finish flag pole first. While this mode looks like a direct port of the NES game, there are different physics and glitches, making optimizing Deluxe a very different task. This run was made by Shot313 There is also a run of the "You vs. Boo" mode.

Hello Shot313 and welcome to TASVideos. Unfortunately your TAS is slower than the current publication by a second.

Hi Shot313, Would you be able to provide some more details on how your run improves on the current publication (linked in Spike's post above)? From the encode, a lot of the movement in the sections that I would expect to affect how fast the movie is look very similar to the movement in the current publication. I haven't had the opportunity to look more closely at the inputs themselves to compare them and the timings. Any extra information you could provide would be helpful in this regard.

It doesn't.

Indeed, I quite strongly expect it to be a tie, but I will not be at home for a few days to be able to check. My apologies to shot313 if this is not the case.

Welcome to TASVideos, Shot313. You might wanna take a moment to look at this post and read what I've said. You surprisingly made an effort on this submission, which is not very often in first submissions, but as Spikestuff and I pointed out, your run is seemingly slower than the currently published run by at least one second. Look for any mistakes you may have made and try to match your efforts to those of the fastest run you can find, then beat it. I'm not sure where the slowdowns could be in this run compared to KingKappa and Denial140's. Given that they both use different versions of BizHawk (this run uses 2.3, the publication uses 2.9.1), it may be due to emulation differences. I could very much be wrong about that though (and probably haven't figured out yet that older versions of BizHawk are still acceptable to TASVideos as well). Also, I believe you submitted the extended input for the high score; for Super Mario Bros. Deluxe runs, it's usually on the last input where it ends. The extended high score input can serve as an additional download. Remember, all of this is to encourage you to improve and do better, not to discourage you. I know that at least I wanna see you improve, and I'm sure there's probably several others that feel the same. Hopefully. Nonetheless... Ask questions, get with staff, and request feedback of your run before submitting. Use the userfiles if you're certain that this run is not up to standards for publication (e.g. for WIPs). Go again when you've optimized all you can... I won't be voting for now though. P.S.: There hasn't been an optimized "warpless" or "challenge mode" submission for this game yet... Maybe you could try your hand at one of these? Just a thought.
Here is an overlay comparison (click here) that I made with not much effort (admittingly), but you should be able to see the differences between the two runs. Red: This run Blue: [6277] GBC Super Mario Bros. Deluxe "warps" by KingKappa & Denial140 in 04:57.45 Both clips are aligned so that Mario in both runs starts moving in World 1-1 at the same time. Yes, this comparison could be better. It's not perfect, but whatever works.
Yaaay, I'm an active player now! :D (as of 11/9/2024) Thanks to TASVideos for the support, they're awesome.
I'm Asumeh, semi-expert SMB1 TASer. :) Check out some of the TASes I don't submit/upload to TASVideos on my YouTube channel, if you'd like. In progress: - Extra Mario Bros. (redo) (with HappyLee and w7n) - I'm currently assisting with finding improvements before the boss. On hold; we're currently struggling to confirm that we have the fastest route. Some debugging may also help with finding glitch exits, but neither of us are experts in that field. - Record my older TASes (excluding any obsolete TASes) and upload to YouTube. - Pretty busy at the moment... Check out my other links here. (Mostly WIP hehe)
