“Well, I’m glad they spelt laser with a Z, because that’s how you say it. You don’t say lais-er.” - AVGN, 2011
About the Game(s)
Action 52 is an unlicensed game made for the NES and Sega Genesis, featuring - you guessed it - 52 different video games. The NES version was published in 1991, whereas the Genesis version was published in 1993. Both versions were published by Active Enterprises.
Lazer League is game 39/52 in the NES version of Action 52. You play as an orange spaceman on a jetpack who's flying through a space city to destroy a green mothership.
About the TAS
This TAS aims to complete both levels as fast as possible.
Bootup
After waiting through the Action 52 cutscene and a little bit of menuing, gameplay starts on frame 967.
Gameplay
At the very start of each level, we hold R for 60 frames. This is to shift the spaceman to the furthest X position the game allows and is a setup for the boss fight at the end.
Since this game, among many other Action 52 games, is essentially an auto-scroller, optimisation is very trivial until we get to the boss fight. All we have to do is survive. Sometimes we have to move slightly up or down to avoid oncoming spaceships.
Each boss fight takes 94 frames starting from the first shot. The mothership takes 24 hits to kill, with 50 points gained for each hit. There's a 6 frame delay after the 1st hit because we're backing off from the mothership, but every hit after that has a 4 frame delay, as that's how fast the game allows us to press a button, due to it lagging every other frame. In Level 2, the mothership moves a bit faster, meaning we have to hold L for more frames, but it doesn't affect our shooting pattern.
That's all from me. Thanks for reading.
DrD2k9: Mostly an autoscroller. Boss fight optimization seems good. Accepting.
