There's been some debate on whether PCSX2 movies should be stable enough for movie submission, but it appears PCSX2 has greatly improved their tas tools over-time. And the hacky plugins to make games work is starting to get some treatment. Like they're finally removing the hacks. A developer who was helping dobbiestation is now assisting pcsx2 team with removing hacks. So could we look into this again? I mean, dolphin has serious desync problems. Maybe PCSX2 is better in terms of sync reliability.

Stop creating these topics about "potential emulators" being allowed on the site. First, it must even be possible to rerecord with them. Second, it must be stable and reliable, proven as deterministic. We won't be doing research to answer your questions about them if you don't know whether they meet any of those requirements or not. It's like asking "Will a PS6 emulator be allowed? Will it be any good?"
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Ok, so if I completed a movie in pcsx2 and it synced well for anyone who tried to sync it on their machine, and with a handful of games completed with no sync issues, would that be acceptable? Reminder that upstream pcsx2 does support tas tools. And for a while now too. And recently its had a number of fixes. And most of the hate towards pcsx2 is its over abundance of hacks. Like I said, they're fixing that. Again, I'll complete some movies without having to splice or anything.

I dont know that yet. I do work full time at a very physically demanding job so I don't have lots of time on my hands. I'll do my best.

PCSX2 does have AVI dumping and rerecording built in, at least as of 1.7. The avi dumping is VFW based and supports RGB32 or YV12 colorspace dumping. I just tested the AVI recording and it works fine. I don't know about potential filesize issues like splitting, etc.

I still don’t believe it’s reliable in syncing yet, and I dont know how I feel about a hacky emulator being newly accepted to the site. Just because an emulator exists doesn’t mean it 100% has potential.

Waiting for 1.8. TAS tools should be ready by then and I'll give it a try. There are plenty of games to choose from.

Can you for the love of everything stop pushing trash? No you can't because you love to push trash for no bloody reason and it's obvious (with a track record) that you never check stuff yourself. I gave reasons as to why. I've repeated myself multiple times to you about it. Woops gave you the reasons why. These reasons are still 100% valid at this time. Enough is enough. Stop it InfamousKnight, this is stupid. Ok even though Woops talks about it in his post I'll just give the short summary of AVI Dumping. AVI Dumping has been part of PCSX2 for a long ass time. How reliable is it? Flip a coin. Heads; it crashes. Tails; it dumps.

Just out of curiosity: Why does it have to be AVI, from all possible video container formats that exist?

Because every encode made for the site is made using avisynth

Those issues are old. Lots of things have been fixed since then(and are not using hacks). Its almost like you didn't even read what I just said. Dolphin had the same issues.

You quoted my entire comment and yet you ignored the first two sentences of what I wrote. Some of the reasons from a year ago still apply today you're more prone to desyncs in PCSX2 compared to Dolphin. So don't you dismiss those comments, again they're still valid. And sure I'll go into the Dolphin comment. Stopping trash from entering will stop us from dealing with a second headache but this time we plugins boi. Sit down, and be patient of DobieStation improving and getting Hawk support.

Both emulators are desync-prone because there is bunch of stuff you should take care of while and after recording a TAS movie. JosJuice described the units somewhere (either at bugs.dolphin-emu.org or at some PR on github) which might affect the stability of a movie playback. And nobody knows exactly what is the culprit of desyncs. Savestates on both emulators don't save all the active parts of File Systems which is the main reason why, for instance, Wii games are very desync-prone. Their structures are different. Hence, the same game can go well with PCSX2, but not with Dolphin. It's too early to discount PCSX2. We need to test both emulators with a set of games. However, I don't know how illustrative such a test will be. And yes, DobieStation has all the chances to become a better competitor. It's very important for him (and Hawk) NOT to fall in the same desyncing pit as happened to PCSX2 and Dolphin.

Hawk won't fall into that "desync pit". The core is waterboxed, and doesn't desync, by design.

I suppose my question is "why does it need to be PCSX2 specifically?"

If you want a PS2 emulator you have a short list. PCSX2 is the only open source emulator with reasonable game compatibility. DobieStation in BizHawk is a stalled WIP and for the purposes of this discussion should be considered as "may never happen." I hit a roadblock that I could not pass and I have no idea how to resolve it. Even if resolved, it's very slow and not very accurate, although shows signs of improving.
