I believe Donald Trump has a decent chance of getting us all killed within just four years. Even after dodging that bullet, it seems like only a matter of time before we manage to kill ourselves. I've never been so pessimistic about the human race as I've been this last month.

I meant that whole "when technology becomes superintelligent and makes everything perfect" thing. Updates itself faster than we can handle, has its own superconsciousness, etc. etc.

I know what the singularity is. I mostly agree with Patashu, but I was merely pointing out a practical hurdle immediately in front of us...

More likely the exact opposite. The relationship between the US and Russia has been getting worse and worse during the last years because of the economic sanctions that the former (and the United Nations in general) has been imposing onto the latter. There's a reason why Russia has been so brash during the last years, and making so much noise. They are not happy. Trump has indicated that he wants to mend fences with Russia, while Clinton apparently had no such intent (but the opposite). Keeping Russia happier is probably for the good of the entire world, but especially Europe. As a Finn, it doesn't exactly make me feel relaxed to see time and again how the Russians are talking about invading Finland. If Trump is able to placate Russia in any way, and make them a bit more content, I'm all for it. That in itself trumps (hah) the other things that I strongly disagree with about Trump's views (such as climate change, healthcare, separation of church and state, etc.)

I'm skeptical Putin is going to be "placated." The Russian game plan is to gain power by dividing the West. And it's succeeded so far. So now we get to motivations. Why does Putin want the West weak? I doubt the answer to that is terribly comforting to anyone. And I really doubt that Putin is going to just sit on his hands once the EU falls apart.

How many examples of that can I get, before the "situation" in Ukraine has started?

When do you consider the situation in Ukraine to have started? With the annexation? Or with the election/attempted Russian assassination of Yushchenko in 2004? Some other time?

With the events that resulted in the civil war. Which actions of the Russia before then were examples of dividing the West? Or you can put it differently. Which actions of Russia not related to Ukraine were examples of dividing the West? You can answer both questions separately if you wish.

I was avoiding replying because it would be off topic. Now that the thread has been split, I guess I'm free to do so: Finland is fucked. Rather than drag out the political discussion, I'll just say enjoy this while you can: Link to video You guys are going to need every ounce of defiance you can muster.

Not related to Ukraine is different from occurring before Euromaidan. For instance, covert support for Trump and Brexit is a big one. It's hard to say either of these are directly related to Ukraine. Especially if you consider the Foundations of Geopolitics, which is apparently used as a textbook in Russian General Staff Academy. (Link is to an ancient revision of the wikipedia article, prior to the Ukrainian "situation.") Primarily, the Russian goal for the UK is to separate it from the EU, and for the US is to stir up racism and extremism. Additionally, Finland should be absorbed into Russia. Just letting the Finns in the audience know the endgame here. Putin isn't going to be placated.

Cool, good one, nice meme. Also, completely not at all how anyone rational thinks. Anybody with half a brain* knows that the election wasn't directly hacked by anyone, Russian or otherwise. The real issue is that it has been proven that the Democrats were hacked, which lead to leaked information that completely damned Hillary Clinton, and someone could easily argue that these leaks persuaded a lot of voters over to Trump's side. *"anyone with half a brain" is still only about 25% of Americans That someone is not going to be me, because arguing with anyone who even slightly supports Trump would be like bashing my head into a brick wall until I cracked my skull open, but I do firmly believe that these leaks were basically the final nails in the coffin for Clinton.

Seriously though, we have got to a point where two sides cannot talk to each other. The fact that we now live in a world where anyone who disagrees with us is at best a troll, if not a stain on the human species, is deeply saddening - more saddening to me than an election result which is only relevant for four years. About the election itself I am certainly disappointed (though not all that surprised), but I refuse to be "butt-hurt", to assume as though this is the end of the world as we know it, as that is exactly how the alt-right wants me to feel. Well I'm not giving them what they want. Mankind survived Hitler and so ought to take Trump in its stride. Happy Christmas!

So in other words some good old investigative journalism was done, and the truth was revealed to the public. Is that bad, somehow?

"Don't feed the trolls, Samsara" isn't supposed to be an open invitation for all of them to come out of the woodwork.

My point with things before the Ukraine "situation" is that things after that can at least be explained by fear and internal crisis. Like, after the US, as Obama said, have "brokered the deal" when the somewhat legitimate Ukrainian government was replaced by one appearing from elsewhere, it made sense to expect NATO missiles/ships in Crimea, so a referendum was initiated in there. The latter wasn't perfectly legitimate, but the government of Crimea didn't seem to consider the new Ukraine government legitimate either. Then we all know the story. I'm not saying those are the actual reasons, but they can make sense. This is why I asked about stuff not related to Ukraine and the resulting crisis: such things could not be explained that way, and I'd like you to elaborate on that kind of stuff.

Trump's big crime is the fact he is offensive, that's it.He is no persecutor of minority or whatever you want to believe he's,guy just got painted like that so Clinton could seem more palatable. He may be rude but that doesn't mean jack for actual policy. If you wanted to,you could find material to say Hillary is just as rude if not more. Link to video Not to mention Pizzagate, lol http://www.counter-currents.com/2016/12/another-slice-of-pizzagate/ Buddy,Trump won because are tired of having to watch their every word for FEELINGS of college students. The timing of the leaks was definitely relevant though.

Grassini, I get you are trying to base your arguments on memes like this little comic you posted. Nowadays terms such as ''racist, sexist and homophobic'' are being used a lot in a sarcastic/satiric way such as you did there, but if you stop to think seriously about it, there is no mistake in claiming Trump is all of these. Just google his name next to this words and you will find a lot of video content that ends any discussion about it. Everyone should see how serious it is to have a president with this kind of ideology, it's not a risible complaint as you try to make it look like. You must know how disgusting and messy Brazil's politics are since last year, USA is an example of how it could be much worse.

I wholeheartedly endorse this comment.

Grassini entered this thread by characterizing posters as "lefty liberals". While I don't take umbrage with the phrase, he certainly meant it as an insult and it added nothing to the discussion. Since then, he posted a rage comic, a conspiratorial video, reference to an absurd conspiracy, and another comic. I'm going to abide by my "don't feed the trolls" statement, but he is not raising the level of discourse in this thread.
