Very short run, shorter than short. The game is beaten by simply starting it.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.11.4
  • Win in shortest time on any mode

Comments

On frame 0 I needed to decide between pressing select or not to win. It changes the initial movement of the ball.

Noxxa: Delaying, pending investigating of accuracy between Atari 2600 emulators.
Noxxa: This run has been proven to be the result of emulation errors, which are being corrected in newer revisions of BizHawk. As such, rejecting this run for being invalid.

As I understand it, this run contains only a single frame of input. That leads me to wonder how viable this is to do in real time. If you reboot the console and try to press that one button at the right frame, wouldn't you just make it after 10 or 20 tries?

Even though I have no idea what kind of game this is or what the run does, I would like to ask if this conforms to my favorite principle of "end the input where no further input can make the ending be reached faster".

There's several submissions with encodes in Grue and the Workbench already, which you can use to inform yourself. You're also free to download the freeware ROM and acquire an understanding yourself.

It probably doesn't.

No, the movie that reach the ending as fast as possible is 12 frames long.

I have tried reproducing this in other emulators and I always lose. I'm pretty sure I'm getting the correct input, you can tell when the paddles both fall at the same time, but the game plays differently. In particular, pterry starts in a different position on screen. You can see this quite clearly here: The bird starts 1 pixel to the left in Bizhawk. I captured this using the Stella emulator, which has a frame advance feature in it's debug mode. The birds X position is at $61. In BizHawk on the frame the bird appears, the value is 0x4D, in Stella it is 0x4C. Other emulators agree with this position. But you don't need frame advance to see the differences, here is a another screen shot of the countdown, the number '1' is pretty clearly one pixel to the left in Bizhawk: It's not the ball that is positioned wrong either, it is at 0x55 at $5B in both. I suspect there is an emulation issue in Bizhawk.

You used the right settings? The easy mode sets the ball slightly to the right, and the numbers go dark when it counts down. But yeah it could be possible that there's an issue in AtariHawk. I know of another homebrew game, Halo2600, which cannot been beaten because of an emulator issue.

I'm pretty sure all my settings are correct, I even put in NTSC Top line = 34 so the bottom line would show up correctly. Actually, I was able to recreate the run in Bizhawk in real time after a few tries, it just doesn't work in other emulators.

You guys are insane. EDIT: You're aware you've reached the theoretical limit of fastest possible game completion?

Well, we have the minimum required inputs to reach the ending. Because the CPU player scores seven times in the movie it's theoretically possible to reach the ending in fewer frames, but that's outside the scope of our community. E: Feos reminded me that longer input but shorter completion generally won't obsolete shorter input, so I amended my post accordingly.

Fewer than one? I meant the minimal movie length, since it basically is game completion to us, as long as it leads to game completion and can't be improved. Yeah, the first ultimately unimprovable run in human history.

The W indicator first appears on frame 2442, which is what I was referring to. It's the old "inputs versus completion" debate, I guess. Granted, the playback runs for 3231 frames but there's only one frame of input, on frame zero (reset, select, and button).

The thing is, you can't submit a vaultable run that has longer input but faster game completion and see it obsolete the one with shorter input, it only happened once I guess and it was a Moons (not Stars) run.

I realized you can put inputs into Stella through the debug screen. I started at frame zero and used the exact same 1 frame input as in Bizhawk in both difficulty settings and I lost both times. So, my guess is that this game cannot actually be beaten in 1 frame on actual hardware.

It's pong, but the paddles are affected by gravity and there's an obstacle in the field of play that changes the direction of the ball somewhat randomly on collision. There's only one frame of input on frame zero, everything else is the ball/obstacle's movement combined with the AI's inability to move precisely enough to require further movement by the player.

wait for a barney hide & seek "any%" run press start, stop the movie at frame 1 and win the true fastest tas ever ? or even a "no controler%"
