Samsara: I literally heard of this game for the first time about an hour ago. Apparently it's a homebrew game? Public domain or something. Someone longplayed it. Maybe it was a shortplay. Let's compromise and call it a mediumplay. Sounds good.
In lieu of actual comments about a game I know nothing about, I'm going to tell you all a story. A grand story, passed down to me from my grandmother, and to her from my grandmother's grandfather, and to him from my grandmother's grandfather's second aunt twice removed. Join me as I whisk you all away to a whimsical fantasy universe and sing unto you the story of this run's creation:
<arandomgameTASer> SamsaraTF: TAS the first level and I'll TAS the rest
Ah, what a wonderful story. Very much prophetic in the olden days. I hope that you too will pass this down to your children and keep the tale alive for as long as humanly possible. Records of this tale shall be recovered by superhumans, millions of years from now, as a sign of how life in our time used to be.
True to our glorious tale, I did indeed TAS the first level in about 10 minutes and arandomgameTASer TASed the rest in about 20. Why did we do it? I'm not sure. I don't think I'll ever be sure. Did you know that "Chase" and "Vault" have the same amount of letters? Now you can't unsee it.
Stage by stage comments
lmao
Can we get real here for a sec
Samsara: No. Well... okay.
Movement is fixed, game's all about minimizing squares walked on. Video games are art. Ferris Bueller gifs. I'm too lazy to find them. I spent more time writing this submission text than I did TASing the game. What am I doing with my life?
Alright, bud.
I would let slip anything but this part. How the flying raisin does collaboration take motivation?????
There are people on this website who collaborate. You know why? Because it actually helps to collaborate with someone else. It gives collaboration to not be stuck in your little corner, go out, tell people 'Hey guys! I'm TASing this cool game!' and it only motives you more.
When you have people working with you, collaborating toghether to destroy a game, at the end of the day, you'ill be much happier, you'ill be much more fulfilled than if you did something alone. And there's really no secret. Hell, collaboration can even attract more people to watch, to appreciate (even though they're not working on your project, such as on IRC), and I've never seen one single person say "Well, being on a team, working with others to achieve a common goal takes too much effort.."
Base line is: being in a team is great. Check it out.
everyone else on this website might be upset about being told that they don't TAS intelligently.
I’m sorry if they’re upset but it’s a fact.
No.
While it might be true that you are able to prove that you TAS intelligently, you are not going to prove that everyone else on this website is not TASing intelligently!
There are tons of suboptimal TASes published on the site… that is what I mean by “not TASing intelligently”. You could change “intelligently” for “properly” or whatever other word you feel like. It’s an irrefutable fact that many published TASes could easily be optimized more.

Don't you think that collaboration is intelligent TASing?
Sure. What do you think happened in the only TAS I was able to finish and get published on this site? I’m also collaborating with Suuuper on a Mario Kart DS all missions TAS, and I have a partner backing me up on Advance Wars: Dual Strike as well (STL). This answer also goes towards xy2_.
What I meant by “collaboration takes motivation” is that I can’t possibly go into every Workbench submission or posted WiP and start helping people with their TASing about a game I do not care about in the least.

Everything takes time to get good at, even TASing, a great way to stop a lot of people from keeping trying to get better at something is being so insulting. Sounds like your issue is more with the what is being allowed to be published, maybe better taking that up with the judges.
Nice ego fest ALAKTORN. get really mad when I watch Pacman too.
For the record, this was mostly meant to be a joke submission. Looks like you missed the joke. I don't post suboptimal TASes, and neither does most people on the site.
If there IS a suboptimal TAS you know about....why don't you fix that?
Cancelling this submission.
effort on the first draft means less effort on any draft thereafter

Found a new strategy on level 2, goes over empty squares only 6 times (as opposed to 8 times), which saved 19 frames. My ending trick only saved 1 frame for some reason, so 20 frames saved on level 2 and 3 frames saved on level 1 (with the ending trick).
Could you post an input file please?
I figured out your ending trick: pause and unpause right before a level finishes.

Good job. I was trying to come up with a mathematical solution to Pacman puzzles so I could prove my 6-empty-steps solution was perfect, but I suck at maths. Was also still trying to just randomly improve the solution, no luck there. I’ll upload the file, but you should be able to replicate it yourself very easily now.

Edit: Found a 7 empty steps solution to level 3 (old was 9). Should save roughly 19 frames again. Edit: 19 saved in-level, 1 with the pause trick; 20 total. 43 frames ahead of the old file. Level 4 starts at 2168, old was 2211.
Edit: Submission is dead but I’ll keep perfecting it. Level 5 in 9 empty squares (4 left side 5 everything else), old was 14 squares. That should be 41 frames improved at the least. /// Improved 48 by strategy, 1 by pause trick; 49 total. 92 frames ahead of the old file. Level 5 starts at 3073, old was 3165.
Really weird, I’m getting different enemy behaviour with the same strategy on 2 different saves in level 4. I’m getting the less spectacular dodge in the TAS… /// The blue and orange guy have 1 place each where they can go either left and right or up and left, respectively. Weird… /// Tried changing the “RNG” with different inputs on level 3, but level 4 stayed the same. Kinda sad I miss out on a nice dodge…
Run -> Nah.
Submission text -> Meh.
Discussion thread -> Yes!

@Zeupar: There’s a difference between frame optimization, and strategy. All 3 of my SM64DS published TASes use massively different strategies that weren’t found at the time the previous one was made.
Your level 4 is quite different, although the general idea is still very similar. Everything else is either the same or has irrelevant differences.

Might be relevant in terms of level 5 if we are getting different “RNGs”. I think I’ll work on that tomorrow.

Oh, I thought that finding the optimal strategies for a video game was one of the most important parts of the process of "TASing intellingently". I mean, if one isn't good at that, their TASes will probably end up being among the "tons of suboptimal TASes published on the site".

Strategy finding has actually nothing to do with TASing. Most strategies used in TASes come from the RTA community (have you seen Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door?), or are otherwise found in a non-TAS setting. Playing a game frame by frame doesn’t help very much with coming up with new ideas and effective ways to do things, what it helps with is to get all the inputs frame perfect and optimizing the game.
For another example, before TASing a level in Chase, I run through it in real time and figure out the best strategy. Only then I start TASing.

In a game like SM64DS there are so many more strats and glitches, many take years to discover and understand, that there will be large improvements. There's a difference between standard gameplay routes, and complex series of glitches.
I mean, look how quickly he found improvements. His comment was overly harsh, but you're being silly.

This is the best I can make:
Figuring out the best route is just testing all possible routes.
Level 1:
Level 2:
The player starts where the arrow is; enemies start in circles with "e"; the distance (number of pills) is the number next to lines (0 if no number); circles with dots have pills;
This looks more like the actual level than the drawings I made on paper.
I didn't make other levels yet.
Figuring out the best route is just testing all possible routes.
That’s not very helpful.
As are your and my posts. Just post those kinds of things, when you have something better to offer, because this kind of problem is not exactly trivial (given there's an adversary)...
All syllogisms have three parts, therefore this is not a syllogism.

Lol, I thought it was funny. You shouldn’t care about the adversary. I don’t when making my strategies. Chances are it’s possible to manipulate them, or there is an equal solution done sligthly differently where the enemy isn’t in the way. Edit: The only level so far that can’t be done perfectly due to enemies is actually level 1. The more complex the level is, the easier it is to manipulate/avoid the enemies.
