  • Complete Super Mario Bros. with Mario Backwards almost the entire time.

Comments

Hi! I'm William Brown also known as LaryDLobster (don't ask why....I mean you can if you want ;) ) and this is my first ever TAS run :) I watched a TAS on awesome games done quick a while ago and I always wanted to try. I finally got around to it so I got myself and a emulator with a goal in mind, to complete Super Mario Bros. quickly (not necessarily the fastest) with Mario backwards almost the entire time (including the underwater section). Everything I did in the run I figured out on my own by playing around with the emulator and with some previous speedrunning knowledge from watching others speedrun. My run may not be the fastest as I don't particularly know all the fastest routes, but I believe it met my original goal. My favorite part is when I moon walk under Bowser (Take that Bowser!!). I hope you you guys enjoy my first TAS run and I am fully open to, actually I encourage, suggestions as to how to make the run better and faster :)

Stage by stage comments

Stage 8-1

At one point I intentionally lose big Mario to get invincibility to jump through a goomba just to clear that up.

Other comments

Again I greatly encourage feedback. I want to become a better TAS speedrunner and your comments would help a lot. I really hope you guys enjoy my first run :)
And remember I'm a Lobster, I'm ALWAYS better with butter...

Noxxa: Claiming for judgment.
Noxxa: Hello LaryDLobster, and welcome to TASVideos. For a submission of a game by a new runner, this run actually does not look so bad in movement; I see you handle movement mostly well considering your "jump backwards" goal, with fairly little slowdown in moving towards the right, and you have some reasonably creative ideas like taking damage to save time a bit later on (although I am not entirely convinced it's faster than just slowing down a bit before the Goomba). However, it still does not make for an acceptable goal choice, and still contains some suboptimal things, with especially a very slow 4-2 strategy which I am certain would be much faster by, for instance, just using the vine. So, I am rejecting this run for bad goal choice and visible improvements.
Better luck next time!

And watching Mario move backwards is interesting, why?

Hey there, Lary! Glad to see a new face around here! Unfortunately, I will have to vote No on this, due mainly to it being slower then the currently published run by over a minute. http://tasvideos.org/1715M.html Still, you seem to want to learn, and I appreciate that! Next time, post in the relevant topic to get feedback instead of creating a submission immediately. That way, you can ensure that your run looks and feels optimized.

Yea, cool, amazing, totally giving it a yes. If anyone needs assistance, that was sarcasm. I voted No.

I don't know I just think its funny to watch mario backwards the whole time. Especially when he is swimming backwards.

Hey William, welcome to TASVideos. While you have provided an interesting concept, unfortunately it's something that can be done a lot faster then this. [HappyLee, one of the supreme SMB TAS'ers will attest] It's not a bad first try, but unfortunately it warrants a No vote. But please don't be discouraged, as this is the 1st step in a positive direction. Please feel free to check through the resource pages for this title and other future ideas as they will prove to be invaluable on how to implement tactics to their fullest. Also, please don't be afraid to post WIP's in the forums to get feedback and suggestions on how to make the most of your TAS and experience. Afterall, despite our quirks, this is a community who is happy to help one another for the all common goal of success and happiness to all who view. Best of luck in your future endeavours. You definitely got the spark :) Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Oh by the way, please don't double post unless there's a lengthy amount of time between posts. You can edit the information in your post, and the IRC will be notified regardless.

Also if it is too much to ask can someone watch my run because I don't know how a TAS of mario is timed. I don't know if I stopped my movie in the right place so I don't know if the time above is accurate. Any help will be appreciated :)

Lary, I watched your run. The proper stopping point of this TAS is frame 18959 (when you touch the last axe). This puts the run at about 5:15. Regarding backwards Mario: The goal choice "Mario Backwards almost the entire time" isn't clear, since it doesn't precisely say when Mario can face forwards and when he cannot. Watching this TAS, I can't say what it is either, since there are more than a few places where Mario walks facing forward. In addition, plenty of alternative goals for this game in the past have been rejected in the past; I think "Mario facing backwards" (including backwalking Mario) is not significant enough to warrant a new category and would be rejected. Regarding post editing: There is an edit button on all your posts, in the top right corner of each post. It is customary to edit your post instead of posting again (double posting), if no one else has posted in the meantime and not much time has passed (such as, not more than 6 hours or so).

The current WR seems to be 4:57! Vote no.

Quickly I thought there was something I didn't get, but while I was watching the video I thought of something. I don't think anybody precise that so I'll try: the website isn't meant as a leaderboard. That being said I really don't see the point at creating a new "Backward Mario" run (but I'm not the first one to point that out). 'NO' vote for me and, if I may give you an advice, you should try yourself on a game that isn't consider as one of the most optimized TAS on the site so you can get a bigger chance to be published / to beat the time in place :)

Does the submission page not link to the submission rules or something? I get the feeling many people submit TASes without understanding that they shouldn’t unless it’s a new record.

Haven't watched the run, but I wanted to say that it's awesome how many people are welcoming LaryDLobster to the community and treating him kindly. This is just one reason why I like this community so much. edit: Perhaps it would also be a good idea to make more clear that TASvideos isn't a leaderboard record site (Top 10 rankings, etc.).

Movies are timed from the emulator's simulated power-on until whenever the recording is terminated. A common newbie mistake is to leave the recording running after no further input is necessary to complete the game. As FractalFusion pointed out, this was a mistake you made. Not a big deal, though.

Oh give me a break, I've been bored out my brain checking other newcomer submissions that I need at least to be a derp once in a while, while expecting others to be constructive. That target was reached because the people who I expected to be helpful were bloody helpful. Ironically enough, I did end up watching it and by the time I watched it people's comments came rolling in on what to do.

From my experience as a member of this community, I discovered that feedback (also the number of it) depends on game's popularity and strangeness of final time (you may know what I mean).

I agree! Most often, the well-known franchises (Mario, Sonic, Pokemon, etc.) will attract the largest crowds due to familiarity. An unusual final time also draws attention, on a smaller scale. It kind of reminds me of MMA. A card featuring the likes of Georges St. Pierre will draw almost a million PPV buys, while a bout headlined by flyweight champ Demetrius Johnson (arguably the pound-for-pound most technical fighter) won't draw anywhere near as much. Anyhow, I'm veering off-topic. LaryDLobster, I hope you're encouraged to continue TASing! There's many cool titles out there (NES, and otherwise) which have yet to be TASed.
