This is my "all items" run of The Legend of Zelda. I collected every item in this game which cannot be lost, spent or anything else. So actually I didn't pick up every item possible. And I just need to collect the strongest item, if some item is replaced by a better one.

Techniques used in this run

Glitches

Screen scroll glitch
This glitch allows to warp from one side to the other on the overworld.
Going inside blocks
It's the same input sequence as the screen scroll glitch. It's possible to went inside blocks and save time by being 8 pixel ahead before bombed entrances or burnt bushes opens and to bypass obstacles. I also used this to walk on water.

Luck manipulation

Enemy behaviour
The enemy behaviour can be manipulated by entering the room a frame later or by pausing the game with the Select button for a cost of at least two frames. They can also be manipulated depending on which position Link is, this means the enemies are going to follow Link.
Item dropping patterns
The items which the enemies are going to drop are depended how many enemies where killed. There's also a value which gives a good item, such as a fairy, bomb or 5 rupees.
Gambing game
There's a simply four frame rule.

Individual level comments

Start to Level 3

It's simply the same as the current published any% run. I got the wodden sword and went straight to Level 3

Level 3

And again there's no much difference to the published any% run. I've collected bombs, Raft, Compass and the map. A game restart sequence is used to save time.

Level 3 to Level 4

I had used a reset to the starting screen, then I went to the gambling game and got 210 rupees for stuff. In the shop I bought the blue candle.

Level 4

There's nothing special, except that I manipulated some enemy to drop 5 rupees, I need to colled 32 more rupees from enemies so I don't need to get them from the overworld.

Level 4 to Level 1

I went directly from the fourth dungeon to the first one. On the way I bought the Enemy Bait and collected one heart container.

Level 1

After entering the first level I went into the room to the right and collected the key. Then used a restart, exit and entered the dungeon again. This is a glitch which opens the first door without using a key, so I saved one key. I collected the bow which is used then in dungeon number 8. Overall this dungeon wasn't very hard.

Level 1 to Level 8

After beating Level 1, I used another reset. I collected three heart containers, 100 rupees and the wooden arrows before I actually entered the eight level.

Level 8

This dungeon required some tricky enemy behaviour manipulation. I collected the magic book and magic key which means that I never need to pick up keys again. It was not possible to do another damage boost before the boss, because the enemies before the boss room wouldn't let me bypass.

Level 8 to Level 2

I went to Level without doing anyhing special.

Level 2

This was some easy level. I spent all my bombs and there weren't any enemies which drop bombs, only them in the room before the boss. But I used the blue candle instead, it also makes the run a bit different. I also got 12 rupees in this dungeon.

Level 2 to Level 5

First I collected the last heart container from the overworld, then I went to a secret place where I got 100 rupees, this is faster than getting the 100 rupees from the gambling game which can be reached earlier. I collected the letter and went directly to fifth dungeon.

Level 5

I glitched level 5 heavily, but it's only a graphical glitch and it will almost vanish to 99.9% after beating the dungeon. In the room where I collected the bomb upgrade, I harmed the old man which made the fire attacking me and this saved a frame. And it wasn't possible to pick up the triforce with full energy.

Level 5 to Level 7

I let Link blow the whistle a few times and warped to the third dungeon. On the way to the seventh dungeon I collected another 100 rupees which are used later for the second bomb upgrade. To mention why I did this damage boost from the fire I put somewhere in the beginning after the screen with the entrance of dungeon 3. I wasn't able to make this enemy appear on another position so I used the fire to bypass.

Level 7

In this dungeon I got the second bomb upgrade.

Level 7 to Level 6

I got the master sword and went straight to dungeon 6.

Level 6

This was some hard dungeon, cause I ran out of bombs and need to pick up the rest of the 32 rupees I need to get 102 rupees.

Level 6 to Level 9

I bought the enemy bait a second time, at this point the item can't be lost again.

Level 9

I manipulated the enemies very well to damage boost everytime it was possible.

one thing that I don't get is why you bought the bait again. It is not a permanent item...

The bait becomes permanent after it's used in dungeon 7. The moblin in this dungeon takes it away. Afterwards the moblin is not in the game anymore so there's nothing where I can use the bait.

But then you can also argue that the shield becomes permanent after a certain amount of time because there won't be anything in your path that can take it away anymore?

There are like likes in the third to last room. I guess you could argue the big shield is permanent for two rooms if you wanted to though.

After reading everyone's posts, I regrettably want to withdraw my yes vote seeing as there is a pretty valid uncertainty if the author really achieved 100% or not.

While this is still somewhat a hot topic, and before this returns to the depts of the regular forum topic, I would like know what people would then consider to be necessary for the 100% definition. Should it have: meat? big shield? potions? I haven't heard anyone about potions... on the one hand it can be seem as hearts or bombs, just an item that can be used and is thereby lost... on the other hand, big shield and meat are also items that can be lost... in the second quest, even heart containers can be lost... And what about obsolete items such as the white sword, blue candle, wooden boomerang, blue ring? A TAS of this game is a lot of work, and you cannot expect someone to make another 100% TAS on the off-chance that a small majority agrees with the particular choices you made. There has to be some kind of general concensus.

Personally I think that meat is not required to get again, the big shield shall be gotten once it cannot be lost anymore from whatever now can make it be lost (I forgot, I haven't played the game in a long time), the letter shall be shown to the old woman and that items that are superseeded by other items (white sword, blue candle etc) are ok to skip in favor of the better item. But I still found this TAS highly entertaining, and my yes vote still stands.

You can always lose the shield, as it gets eaten by Like-Likes, a monster which I'm pretty sure shows up in even the last dungeon in the game.

You can always lose the shield, as it gets eaten by Like-Likes, a monster which I'm pretty sure shows up in even the last dungeon in the game.
Of course they do. There will always be like-likes in the game, but the moblin which takes away the bait never returns, even with a reset.

The game's title screen shows a list of all treasures. Collect each of them at least once plus all eight Triforce pieces and you'll have 100%. Yes, that's a lot of work: but a Metroid 100% run is expected to have every single bomb upgrade, and a Castlevania 100% run is expected to have every single monster soul, and so forth. I'm willing to accept that getting (e.g.) the Red Ring counts as both rings, since it gives you the effect of both and they use the same inventory slot. My problem with the interpretation that "you can't lose the meat a second time" is that in the Second Quest, which is on the very same cartridge and also TAS'ed, you can do precisely that. So this means that the definition of "100%" is different between the First Quest and Second Quest, and that strikes me as inconsistent.

Interpreted strictly, this would mean you'd only need to get one Heart Container, rather than all of them; IIRC, the Heart Container is only present in that list once. I certainly wouldn't count it as 100% without all of the Heart Containers; I'd also require discovering all the "warp stairs" locations in the overworld. Other than that, for the little my opinion is worth, I'd be inclined to agree with this definition for speedrun purposes. (There's also the question of whether it's still 100% if you get one of the Heart Containers and then give it up later to buy your way past a locked door. I'd say it isn't, but there's rationale to disagree with that.)

about the obsolete items, I'll still use the "as powerful as Link can be" concept. Using Ocarina of Time as an example, no one would count the Giant's Knife as a necessary item, skipping right to the Biggoron's Sword. Potions? I guess it would be part of the 100% run, but it's so useless in a TAS.. But, then again, the shield is as useless. And the 100% second quest run should NOT lose any hearts.

The shield is less useless as having the piece of meat a second time. At least you can walk head first into some enemy projectiles without being hit, which could theoretically be useful. (If useless means not being used, then stuff like the power bracelet, magic wand, book and magic boomerang are also useless.)

For comparison, my general rule of thumb (applied to most games, not just Zelda) is: If you could explore the game again, would you be able to tell that the "lesser" item had not been gotten? Using the White Sword and Magic Sword as examples: if you get the Magic Sword without having gotten the White Sword first, and then go back to the cave where you would have gotten the White Sword, is the White Sword still there? If so, I would say getting the White Sword first would be mandatory; if not, I could probably be convinced that getting the White Sword is not necessary for 100%. Similar things could apply for the Blue and Red Rings, and the Wooden and Magical Boomerangs, and so forth. Enemy Bait, potions, shields which are eligible to be eaten by Like Likes, and things like the Giant's Knife are IMO all different types of consumables. I don't have a single, easily-described rule for whether - and, if so, how - consumables should be counted towards 100%; by and large I would say "you have to get at least one of each, but you don't have to keep it", but I would also make quite a few exceptions to one half or the other of that.

Admittedly I've never seen it really used that way, or had much success using it that way myself, but the idea is there.

I used the bait once in Level 2 to manipulate some enemies.

It's come to my attention that the formal definition for 100% in Ocarina of Time does state that if an item is upgradeable, you need only to collect the strongest one, if skipping the intermediates is possible. If this definition is applied to the original game, that makes it permissible to skip the White Sword and the Blue Ring. So if that is what we'll go with, then the submitter is fine on that, regardless of whether I like it or not. Still, there's the matter of the Big Shield to debate over. Also, for the record, I don't care about consumables in the Zelda series for the most part, since in most games, they go in Bottles, which are a concrete acquisition that doesn't go away; so exactly what is in your Bottles, I don't care, as long as you have all four. This game though, since potions disappear from the inventory entirely when used up, I don't know what to say on those from an objective viewpoint (although subjectively, I'll assert again that I don't personally care).

I'm sad that this run got cancelled. Of course I have some personal bias about NES Legend of Zelda, but: The luck manipulation and combat was very precise, and it was fun to watch. A great deal of effort was put into this run. I like this variant/ruleset since it shows many rooms and areas that the other runs do not, and it's not too long and drawn out. I feel a run where all keys, bottles, full rupees, full bombs, big shield, white sword, etc. need to be obtained would make the run too long, too redundant and would overstay its welcome. I would rather have seen this run published as a 'full inventory run' or name it as everyone sees fit, and then the debate could continue regarding goals and improvement and what categories or rule-sets would obsolete this tas.

Getting all keys wouldn't make sense, because the magical key is obtained. What do you exactly mean with full rupees, full bombs? Having 16 bombs, 255 rupees in any point of the run or finishing the game with 16 bombs, 255 rupees? I'm not sure this will work with rupees, but it's way to arbitrary. Getting the big shield and potion would make the run slightly longer, there would be only a change in the rupee route.

255 rupees is a pointless goal, I don't get the purpose at all. All bomb upgrades should be an obvious yes, as well as getting the big shield. I don't get any discussions that want them skipped, I see no logic behind it.
