Super Mario All Stars is a collection of the Nes games Super Mario Bros 1, 2, and 3, and the japanese version of Super Mario 2, dubbed "The lost levels" all with updated graphics. I created this movie with snes9x, and it took me about 2 hours to make, often repeating jumps and such, testing whether, for example, jumping over a pipe with a pirahna plant in it was faster than jumping on the edge of the pipe and jumping over. I finished this game in 5:14 seconds from title to when I hit the axe on the final level, taking no hits whatsoever and no powerups. Most of my information came from the video of the nes version by Michael Fried, but the rest came from trial and error. Although he managed to abuse a few bugs in his version, most of them have been fixed in All Stars, so I had to find other means of completing it quicker. Lastly, I managed to beat my last recording by about 45 seconds. I hope you enjoy/ed this movie.

Bisqwit: Rejected, because 1) it's aims to be as close duplicate of an existing movie as possible and 2) it fails to do that.

Not correct. The wall jumping trick exists in All Stars too. It's a very straightforward port of the NES code (they probably didn't want to break existing levels - "if it works, don't fix it"). Anyway, we already have a SMB movie and I don't think we need a clone of it. This being the same game as the NES version, levels and physics and all, the movie brings nothing new to the world.

I tried applying some of my SMB hacks to the SMAS version, and found some was the same and some was different. For example, the staircases (seen before flagpoles and in other locations) have changed greatly in the code. In the NES version, the staircase are an object with a size parameter to determine how big it is. The SMAS version instead builds it from several vertical or horizontal blocks.

Personally, I prefer the SMAS version which contains better music and graphics.

I don't believe the clipping detection in All-Stars is as deficient as in the original. I recall that it is quite easy to clear the plants in 4-1 in the original, but not possible (or at least very difficult on a console) in All-Stars.

Actually it isn't possible to jump over the pirahna plants on the snes version, and if you look closely, you'll notice that in 8-4 they don't disappear when you get to the tunnel. The physics aren't the same either, you jump a lot higher and slower than in the original, and you can't jump through the sledgehammers.

Some notes... * 379 timeunits in in the exit of the first pipe room. NES could have 380 with some trying. Did you try? * The alternate pipe trick seemed to work in your movie in 8-4, so I believe it would work in 4-2 too. * You got many fireworks. Are you sure they don't waste time? * The first plant indeed doesn't disappear in 8-4. You're right here. * At 8-2, you slowed a bit too much at time=358. I know it's difficult, but it can be done a little faster... Or do you blame All Stars again? Edit: Anyway, to be clear, I repeat: I do not want to publish a clone of NES SMB movie. But if enough people disagree with me, I'll do it. In that case, I want to see some competition before deciding what to do with this one.

Well, you have to realize that we tend to be perfectionists here, so don't see what we're doing as "jumping down your neck" (yeah, I saw your original post), but as notice that there are errors in your movie that could have been corrected. You have the ability to go back and fix any shortcomings, there's no reason to not exercise that.
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

All I want on this site is to keep the entertainment to noise ratio high. Repeating decreases the former and increases the latter, I'm afraid.

We don't really consider what we're doing to be acting superior: many people who haven't made a single movie or have had their movies rejected react the same way we often do. We say what's wrong more than we say what's right because it's the former that really sticks out: if half of someone's movie is amazing and half is crap, we're going to focus on improving the bad parts. Additionally, english is not the primary language for many people here, and so while those people tend to have a firm grasp on the language, they may not be sure of the extreme subtleties of how some words might be received in comparison to others.

Blechy had some really good points there. Also, when submitting a movie you put yourself in a very fragile position (so too speak) and if every submission would get accepted, then the whole idea with submitting, voting and feedback wouldn’t bee necessary. Therefore, when submitting I recommend you assume that people will complain, even if the things they mention will be small. And I really didn't like that you accused us for acting superior. What all of us want is to help you and everyone that submit to see that things that can be improved, we don’t complain ‘cause we like it.
Bein' away for like five years, and not a single new post in the ZSNES forum... :'-(

Effort doesn't equal good results, effort is corrleated with good results. That means the harder you work on a run the greater the chance that you will produce something entertaining, but it is never guaranteed that you will succeed in doing so. It's important then, to take what is told to you here as objective feedback, and not as a direct attack aimed toward your work. This criticism will pay off in your future runs, and you'll be even more pleased with the results. :)

Try it yourself, it's impossible to get 380, the clipping detection is different, so you can't jump off the blocks to the pipe and go straight in, you either have to slow down, or hit the pipe, meanign that 379 is the fastest possible time.

Regardless, I feel that your efforts should go to a game that has not been done already, as is the case pretty much with this one.

Too bad if it's the last. Nobody is perfect as a beginner, and shouldn't stubbornly claim to be so. However everyone can improve. Next time choose your game better. :) I'm now locking this thread, since the case is finished.
