I was wondering if someone could tell me or point me to a site on how some of the things in this video occured? For example not running into any monsters and almost constently getting critical hits. I remember playing Dragon Warrior back in the day but never had this good of luck heh.

That's the nature of re-recording. All those monster encounters or missed hits were erased and done over.

That's the nature of re-recording. All those monster encounters or missed hits were erased and done over.
I get the re-recording, and it certainly seems possible that it could be done with this. But when I watch the AVI, it differs radically from when I play the FMV. The game never gets critical hits on the metal slimes, and consequently the player is killed. Maybe I am doing something wrong. I don't want to accuse anyone of cheating without proof, but I know there is a game genie code that allows for every hit to be critical, and it seems odd that the AVI and the FMV don't agree. Is there a reason I could not recreate what I saw in the AVI from the FMV? John Ratliff

Yep, there's a reason - you have the wrong version of the ROM. The US Dragon Warrior roms versions that I know of are, using GoodNES notation:
    Dragon Warrior (U) (PRG 0) 50.4 KB Dragon Warrior (U) (PRG 0) [h1] 50.35 KB Dragon Warrior (U) (PRG 0) [h2] 50.42 KB Dragon Warrior (U) (PRG 1) 50.4 KB
Of these, Genisto's run will only work with the (PRG 1) version, the others will invariably desync in interesting ways. Good rom sites such as *CENSORED*, *CENSORED* or *CENSORED* usually offer a choice of version.

just watched the latest dragon warrior 1 movie, it blows the old one away, i was musing on it and i thought, in the next dw1 movie a good thing would to do would be to buy a wings sometime early on, maybe fight an extra battle to afford it, use the wings right after killing the dragonlord to save the long trip back to the castle. just a thought.

That'd mean killing another Goldman (after going to the Inn, as it's hard to beat one on Level 7 with no equipment and I must keep as many herbs as possible) and going all the way to Kol (without a death shortcut) to buy the item, which would add at least 3 minutes ... and only save about 1 minute at the end, so it's not worth it. One way to beat my 24:03 time by a few more minutes, though, would be to kill the Dragonlord with Hurt (11 hits and a lot of luck manipulation to make it work), which would save 5 minutes there by making the fight not last forever with 1 damage hits ... but I'd have to get there with enough MP, which would require getting Erdrick's armor (and a longer path) and going up to Level 8 or 9. That'd take less than 5 minutes for sure, but I'd have to find the shortest way to do it ...

If I remember correctly there are some wings behind a bunch of doors in the bottom right of Rimuldar. If you fought an extra goldman wasn't a problem you could kill him and just buy keys with your extra money to unlock the doors blocking it.

yeah since you have to buy keys anyway that makes sense, and with the right manipulation to get criticals, goldmen aren't so bad

Well, he only has enough herbs as it is to make it through the barriers at the end, adding the goldman would probably make it require too many. Plus, he might need two trips for the keys (as you can only carry so many), so it might not be saving any time.

I can use Heal before fighting the Goldman, I regain the MP after I die on the way out. Beating another Goldman would add about 25 seconds, then 3 seconds to buy 2 more keys (I'd have 5, can hold 6), around 20 seconds to get the chest ... to save just about 1 minute at the end, so that should be worth it. I actually got something planned that should save about 2 minutes and half in total, still without getting Erdrick's armor (but going up to Level 8) ...

Nope, hehe. I'll be shortening the Dragonlord fight a lot, now that I found a way ... the rest before that will be a little longer, but all for good reasons. After some more thinking, if I got everything planned right, I might even be able to get it under 20 minutes.

I applaud your commitment to an incredible movie that nonetheless will conclude with unbearable tedium. I wouldn't have the patience.

excellent video, one thing that could save a few seconds is that you can get to a goldman sooner, there are there wooded squares right below rimular that contain them, then you wouldnt have to walk all the way down the screen. also, the last fight is very tedious, i had no idea that hurt could work on the dragon lord. even if it doesnt save time, it would be worth it to use a few more hurt spells on him to cut down on that fight

what about a dragon warrior 2 movie, this game is longer and harder than the first one. i played this game on the super famicom remake. -on super famicom you can control the three characters. -on nes i think that you can control the first characters and the others make random actions (time for luck manipulation)

No, you control all of them in Dragon Warrior 2 (NES) too ... only Dragon Warrior 4 in the last chapter doesn't let you control the other characters. Dragon Warrior 2 might be interesting to try after I'm done, but it's definitely much longer and will take a lot more planning, so I don't think I'm up for it yet ... I started my improved run yesterday, I'm not that far into it yet but I got to Level 8 and can beat a Goldman in 2 hits (just barely), now I have to make them give enough gold and the rest will be fairly easy ... until I try to make Hurt always work and do maximum damage, but alternating with normal attacks at the right time should help. Also killed the first Metal Slime in one hit with no equipment ... I beat all 7 of them without healing (went first against 4, couldn't get the others since the odds were too low), but I still needed 2 herbs to get Erdrick's Token. Doesn't matter too much though, I'm still going to have 6 when I'll really need them at the end

i look foward to seeing your next run, it sounds like it's gonna be even better dragon warrior 2? that game has a LOT of backtracking...it would be a long movie no matter what, it would take something REALLY special for the movie to be worth it. i do want to see more rpg runs though, the first 2 ultima games for nes, final fantasy 1 and the like that'd be pretty cool.

Not a lot of backtracking, actually. Just a couple times to get the Water Crest and Rubiss Charm. The rest of the game is pretty straight-forward. If luck can be manipulated in dw2 as effectively as dw1, then that's definitely special. Avoiding as many battles as you want, always landing tremendous hits, putting enemies to sleep, enemies dropping items, that's all great stuff. Unlike dw1, there are more unavoidable battles which will require heavy luck manipulation to win at low levels. I'll start a new thread with the basic itenerary in case someone wants to pick up the project.

I'm now up to the Dragonlord, but I'm stuck until I can find a better way to make Hurt work like I want ... the odds for it to work (1/16) and do 12 damage (1/8) and not wake up the Dragonlord (maybe 1/2) are really low. I kept getting either 5 damage or 12 and waking up, even anywhere near 12 seemed too rare ... But everything else up to that point went great, a 19 minute run is very well possible if I can get the above to work.

Scroll down, there's a thread for DW2. A couple of us have messed around with it already, but I'm putting the project on hold until I finish FFMQ. DW2 is going to be a lot more difficult to accomplish. More things have to be manipulated in combat, since you have 3 allies and enemies can drop items.

How do you manipulate the luck in these games, Dragon Warrior especially... I beat DW when I was like 10, and every so often i get nostalgic.... looking for new and innovative ways to do it.
