I seemly hadn't made any run for quite some time, so I thought I'd make a run. This beats the current published run by 6693 frames (~1 minute and 52 seconds) due to better optimized movement and a neat shortcut.

  • Takes damage to save time
  • Abuses programming errors

Tatooine Desert: Carsick people should avoid traveling with Luke here. Luke himself also got so dizzy that he ended up taking a different route.
Tatooine Mos Eisley: Better speed management and less waiting is the key here.
Tatooine Mos Eisley Hangar 94: Speed management and manipulating away a storm trooper at the end made up for some time saved.
Death Star Hangar: Keeping speed better implies improvement.
Death Star Corridors 1: Jumping when exiting a door after entering it in my own awesome way makes up for fast acceleration.
Death Star Tractor Beam: Luke jumped, shot, blamed a frame rule and gained some frames.
Death Star Corridors 2: Luke is sick of life and tries to take care of it but got saved by a door.
Death Star Detention Center: Jumping from a conveyor belt without touching the d-pad means pwnage.
Death Star Escape: Luke uses all the skills he's learnt so far (that is, running and jumping) to overcome the previous run.
Space Shooter 1: Shooting as soon as the tie-fighters show up is an instant winning formula.
Space Shooter 2: Here Luke really shows the true power of the TAS (force? pfft...)
Trench: Shot early.

First I want to thank Randil for sharing a WIP which made me gain some time early in the run and for sharing some addresses I didn't yet have. Also for helping me in the 2nd space shooter to find out why the enemy counter sometimes ticks down even if you seemly hit nothing. Sadly this couldn't be used as much as I hoped since this makes the next enemy spawn quite long afterwards but it is used once, at the very end since then no more enemy spawns.
I also thank laughing_gas and Walker Boh for the previous run which will make it impossible for this run to get rejected due to a bad game choice, thanks guys;)

Flygon: Processing to prevent Ilari from threatening to eat my wings... or ears... or... my username and avatar combination is really confusing. See, if this was the Star Wars universe, it'd be normal for something that's called a Flygon to have brown and cream ears.
But, I'm just stalling for subtitle placement here, I'll see if I'm able to make an MP4 for once in my life.

This is bad game choice? I was pretty entertained! And the run was good! The shooting segments had me surprised with what the NES could do... I guess they didn't have 620 kilobytes of cart space for nothing. Obvious Yes vote and HD encode coming up.

As you know, I watched most of this run a few days ago. It's a little sad that the "blank shot" trick couldn't be used more, but it's no big deal. Overall, the game choice isn't that bad, except perhaps for the space shooting sections. Here's my yes vote, you improved the published run (any my WIP too, for that matter) a lot more than I thought was possible!

Coincedentally, I looked at laughing_gas' Starwars movie yesterday and wondered "Can this be improved?" LOL. I thought it was funny that this showed up when it did. Will watch at lunch time. EDIT: Okay, I watched at lunch but did not get a chance to comment till now. Work is lame sometimes. Anyhow, the run looked good. I found it to be a perfect length for such a game. And the optimization level was pretty high. Good work. Anyone up for improving Mission Impossible? XD

I'll throw another yes vote on this. I had no idea the published movie could be improved THAT much, wow. Also, I don't think this would not have been rejected on game choice today, it is a pretty cool game and this TAS rips it apart.

I just registered an account on these forums in order to comment on this TAS. I grew up with this game, and NES Star Wars is, in many ways, the embodiment of Nintendo Hard. The game is so full of dead ends, confusing pathways, and different ways to kill you that not even a Game Genie can save you from its wrath. Did I mention that you only get a few lives, and the supporting characters (yes, Han, and Leia are playable characters) have one non-replenishing health bar each? I believe I beat this game once, many years ago, and never again had the patience to try. But it is great to see this game owned so thoroughly. I didn't even know that the Princess was optional... and I'm going to guess that Han is still drinking his liver out in Mos Eisley. To those who haven't played the game, you are actually expected to make use of the "unusual" flying/falling-with-style physics to solve the platform puzzles in some stages. However, I always thought that Luke's "flying" pose looks more like a "rocking out in midair" pose. Yay.

Yeah I kept going back and forth on that one... it looks okay during the turrent shooting scenes, but not so much for the trash compactor, etc. Some of the atlas scenes aren't 1:1 either actually. If I had extra space horizontally and/or vertically than I stretched to fit. Mainly because of YouTube compression... which you already know about ;) Still want to download a good-quality version? I'll upload one for you tonight if you do.
