Introduction

Ninja Gaiden for Game Gear is quite unlike that of the NES version or even its cousin on the Master System. It has a similar (but simpler) feel as the Master System version, but has the wall climbing element of the NES game. I chose this game because I wanted to TAS a Game Gear game, and ninjas are always cool. I thought it was a decent game for TASing though not as spectacular as the ones for SMS/NES.

Technical Mumbo Jumbo

I used Dega 1.16 with the Mame Core to make this movie. After figuring out that is requires python 2.4/2.5 and not 3.1 (shakes fist) in order to run python scripting I used its built in Ram Monitoring feature to find and monitor these addresses:
D600 - X on screen position C423 - Boss Health
There weren't any noteworthy tricks/glitches to mention here. Special weapon maintenance is the key to this TAS. Bosses receive 2hp of damage instead of 1 with special weapons, so managing which weapons I have and conserving force are critical to optimizing.

Final Boss

The final boss has 3 forms. The first 2 forms can be exploited to conserve special weapon power. If you do a regular attack, there's a small frame window where you can do a special attack that causes the regular attack to do 2 damage AND hit the boss for 2 more.

Thanks

SonikKustar for suggesting this game. I assumed it was the same as the SMS one that I already TASed but it was an entirely new game. I would have never tried it if he hadn't mentioned it!

Flygon: Replaced Flowplayer module with higher quality YouTube module. sgrunt: Replaced YouTube module with Flowplayer module to show latest version of run.

klmz: Delayed as the author implicitly requested due to discovery of minor improvements.

adelikat: Replaced submission file with one that contains a new final level. The submission is 708 frames faster, mainly due to a new trick I discovered on the final boss this time which is explained above.

klmz: As the first submission of this game, its quality is good enough, and the audience feedback is very positive. Accepted.

I saw this on adelikat's SVN and was quite entertained. Yes Vote. TASVideos sure has had a lot of TASes that seem to stand out from the crowd lately. This IS indeed the third GG submission afterall.

Thanks for the encode, sgrunt! The run looked good! Though, why didn't you save your last special weapon shot for the last blow of the final boss so you could end input earlier?

Entertaining run. It looks like it's mostly easier than NES Ninja Gaiden. The last boss battle reminds me a lot of Galbalan, the last boss on Ys III fo SNES. (Yes vote)

Not bad at all, supplying a HD and downloadable HQ (Even higher quality than Grunt's edition!) encode soon. Since I suck at making a commentary regarding runs, I'll just stuff a Yes vote here and run on my way.

I liked this entertaining TAS of a short game with nice music. I suggest this screenshot (frame 17284): I use Windows, so I didn't follow the guidelines to create this image. But there is another reason that prevents my example from being used, and it has nothing to do with frame choice. >_>

Link to video YouTube edition uploaded. HQ version will take a while to process, because well... it's the HQ version, it's going to take a while to process. Don't expect me to make many HQ encodes in future, I think I'll be leaving them to encoders with Quad Core CPUs.

Ryu looks so awkward in this game, like he's always about to fall over. However, this was a fairly pleasant watch. It's nice to see that you don't get the same knockback from damage that the other Ninja Gaiden games are known for. Out of curiosity, though, would it have been better to save more weapon power for the last form of the final boss? The shots from that boss seem like they produce a lot of lag, so I would've guessed the weapon power would pay off most there. EDIT: Zeupar, I finally caught why your screenshot couldn't be used ;-) I'm amused that a Spanish ROM synced just fine.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Download your HQ encode here. Grunt, are you able to upload this to your Archive.org collection? I'd do so, but you didn't upload it to the Speed Run archive... For the curious, the HQ basically means it's been scaled by 2x in both directions, and downsampled to YV12 using point sampling... this basically means it ends up looking the exact same as RGB dump. It's worth noting that the only reason this is bigger than the SD encode is because my audio bitrate is far higher, for some reason my video stream is smaller than Grunt's SD encode, I'll talk extensively to him about it. For people wanting quick comparison images taken from my computer (Your mileage varies from player settings to player settings), click below: My HQ encode Grunt's standard encode The status bar and Ninja are the most affected with the standard encode. Edit: For kicks, I uploaded the HQ video onto Dailymotion. Link to video

Pretty interesting. The way in which damage seems to not really affect Ryu was a little underwhelming, but I enjoyed all the boss battles. Especially the clairvoyant look of that porthole battle.

I didn't use a Spanish ROM. The letter ç isn't used in Spanish. But yeah, you spotted the problem. :P

This run doesn't seem to be optimized well, especially on the last level. Could the author please elaborate the health/weapon management on the last level? EDIT: I found something that might be a time saver: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1425599377/avoid_damage_and_do_glitch.mmv

I'm a bit surprised that Adelikat hasn't posted in this thread at all. I guess he's been busy with something else?

I enjoyed this movie, which is rare for me in a 'run-right-for-justice' movie. So, yeah, definite yes vote, stands out in the crowd of RRFJ movies.

Ok, I updated the submission with a new final level. Its 708 frames faster than the previous. The trick klmz posted saved a few frames but wasn't useful in any other place. Redoing the final level I saved about 100 frames total from various small improvements. When redoing the boss fight I discovered a trick to allow regular weapons to do 2 damage and allowing me to conserve a lot more special attacks. More special attacks mean a much quicker boss fight.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects
