What a great game! Still amazed to see such development for this amazing console. I was surprised by this and couldn't stop watching. I can only imagine how hard this game has been for runners, especially considering how much time you have to clear each screen (I'm guessing that is a count down timer in the upper left?). Anyway, excellent choice for a game to TAS. Yes vote.

I am nominating Sniq. All the work I have ever been briefed, or collaborated with him on, has yielded very little or no improvements against any TAS he has produced. Even though Sniq has submitted once this year, his optimization skills are amazing and my highest point for bringing him up as a candidate for this category.

At the beginning, I really didn't understand why someone would have TASed this, and then the heavy stuff came! This seems to be a progressive coarse where more and more skill is required to reach the end. Well, I like this game and I definitely see a reason for TASing it. Speedrunners must hate this game! :) Yes vote. On the technical side, I too recognize some optimizations issues, but I wasn't sure if it was game mechanics or not. Do keep trying!

This cut is amazing. I once thought of looking into further improvements, after Alyosha last submitted it. The difference in strategy is more like I would have tried, since clearing all the aliens out in a row, only makes them drop slower. Having the outside rows remain is excellent and allows faster shooting.

This may be a long shot, but it could be an empty frame past your last input. With Bizhawk, a blank input is always viewed after the last input is made. This is done to open up a spot for selecting the next button press. I suppose the only way to clear this blank frame is to open it up in a text viewer. I can do this in Bizhawk, but I tried opening up your FCEUX file and it doesn't operate the same, since bizhawk contains all the files in a "Zip" format. So, I know very little about your chosen emulator and how it records the "input" file....but that could be a place to start.

wow, I never knew a hack like this existed. I rarely watch TASes all the way to the end, before I make my decision to vote. This one...I had to see all of it! :P The only part that I was hoping to see was a split between Mario and Luigi at the end with Bowser...where one jumps over and the other walks under. That would have been neat. Anyway, Yes vote.

I have the same issue... that is why I chose to TAS this game :) it feels like a brand new way of playing the same story, but with a multiplayer component that is asynchronous and much deeper than a second controller!

On the first level at least, many enemies block your attacks until they attack first. The goal is to quickly block then counter-attack. After the first level this mechanic doesn't show up until the wrestler fights later on, and I'm swiping the sword largely to avoid hits and create space rather than outright kill. On a technical level, I am still figuring out lag frames I think, and why certain inputs required two frames of held input (chopping grass) while regular attacks sometimes only needed one tap, depending on the actions of enemies and other sprites on the screen. For safety I used a two-frame attack hold almost everywhere that I was not sure it was necessary (no lag frames anywhere). I had more time to focus on consistent timing for the bosses, which had less lag frames overall as well, but I have some stuff to learn before I optimize the run to each enemy. Some enemies also have random health I think? At least on the first level... There were also moments with multiple enemies on the screen where it was better to wait an extra few frames for a second enemy's invicibility to wear off, then attack two at once with a rotating swipe :)
Ok...great. Thanks. I also like the fact that you are focused on reducing lag. Year ago, I started to see more and more TASers focusing on lag reduction. I wasn't one of them, but I soon started to realize the beauty of reducing them and the skill it takes to accomplish it.

I usually am criticized for misusing the "Voting" on submission, but this time...this game gives me a sense of nostalgia and makes me want to relive some of my games I played way back then. Because most games do not entertain me anymore. Now to my analysis. I have never played this...so I'm not sure what I'm analyzing. I do notice that you take longer to dish out hits on some enemies, but bosses...you can deliver them immediately after the I-frames have dissipated. Can you explain this? I'm giving you a Yes vote, for entertainment...only because game-boy games, of this kind, certainly give me great memories.

The SUper Boulder Dash release by Electronic Arts loads considerably faster. assuming bizhawk supports .g64 images, it should boot. if not you can convert this .g64 to a .d64 and it should still work. there's fault in the protection checker where if it fails it will keep retrying, and then continue and load the game anyway. whoops! This is without a fastload cart. if action replay v5 NTSC is attached as well as the .d64, nearly any disk release of the game will will load very rapidly, and faster than this one. But with no external hardware, this one loads fastest. It is indeed the same game, just with an extra EOA logo on the title screen.
I usually end up using a tape version, because most of the disk images tend to be "cracks" and I would rather have an official release, over taking a chance on a version that has trainers and other non-related content (with cheat prompts). As for the Fast Load, that would be only for Disk Drives...where all Pins were used on the cable...instead of one. The Tape drive had its own socket, which was painfully slow.

I had to think about this and I finally figured out an exact number! I have a ton of backup files and I found the last BK2 before I started running the BOT. It has 109678 re-records in it. So, if you add 6472, which is the amount of work done to create the "Template" inputs, you would get: 116150 re-records. This includes 3 "run-throughs" (after discovering more each effort on optimizing this game) and all the RNG input creations for the templates needed for the BOT. Thankfully, I kept good notes and retained all of my project backup files.

Samsara, I'm really sorry. I found a dumb mistake on the last Cave that improves this run by 132 frames. While I was at it, I removed that ending input from the bonus cave. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/75368131588809927

If there's no manual TASing in this movie, we will have to nuke the rerecord count. We do that for botted rerecords so it doesn't mess with statistics on manual ones on the site.
The only manual inputs come from two different efforts. 1. The first round was manipulated manually with a different method before it was visible. 2. The "Solving" inputs were made manually, upon finding a desirable pattern. So the only BOTing occurred to get different patterns to show upon the next round, by injecting D/ Right-Left/ A-B inputs alongside of the "Solving" inputs.

FINALLY!! I've always wanted to see this one done. Would have done it myself by now, but I really wasn't sure how to even go about C64 TASing or how to find the correct version of the game or anything. I thought about attempting a run of the GBA version, but that wouldn't be very ideal since the screen size is so small. And I even thought about running the Wii VC port.
Well...thank you very much. I am well aware of your effort on the NES and have watched it to see how the C64 and NES compare. As you aware, the two are dramatically different in mechanics and how the game runs the obstacles on each room.
CtrlAltDestroy wrote:

No objection to that. It only confirms that I picked a good game for showcasing.

I see that you used a bot to manipulate the amoebas. I assume that the amoeba AI here is nothing compared to the NES version, which was eventually solved and found to be very deterministic (it had to do with objects touching the amoeba blob that changed its growth pattern, and number of free spaces around the blob that sped up its growth rate). So if I take a stab at this game, I'd be more than willing to try using your bot to deal with that cave.
How about this...look me up on Discord and we can talk.
CtrlAltDestroy wrote:
I might be in the minority here, but I'd also love to see a full-game run. I know of the precedent set by the NES run of running only loop 4 as the "hardest difficulty", but there's a rather huge difference between the C64 and NES versions of the game: whereas the NES version increases the difficulty of each level on subsequent loops by loading the base level and running a script to make small tweaks (a blocked passage here, an extra enemy there, and so on), the different difficulty levels on C64 are practically entirely different levels from one another, requiring drastic changes to the routes and strategies. I estimate that such a TAS would take about 30 minutes more, but I don't think that fans of this game who have waited so long for a TAS would mind watching that.
This was a concern of mine. After talking with a few people on the judges thread, I treated this game like I do others...where I choose the most difficult level to TAS.
CtrlAltDestroy wrote:
About the ending input thing, personally I would consider it a perfectly valid speed/entertainment tradeoff if the movie hits the reset button (assuming one exists on the C64, which I'm not familiar with) to return to the title screen and leave the viewer with the music.
I'm really cautious about following the rules. Since Samsara and the staff have come to a conclusion on the final input, I would certainly choose to end the inputs earlier, since I strive to find everything that is allowed by the rules to make the time as fast as possible.

Question for the Judge: Do the rules support a "dead end" situation like this?
I took a look at the run and had a brief talk with other staff and we're generally in agreement that the final input isn't needed here. It's a looping game with the final input leading to the next loop, it doesn't lead to an ending or credits or anything final, so it isn't necessary to include in the input file.
Ok, that is good to hear. So do you want me to remove it or will you handle it?
