Ah, one of my favorite games... your run is so fast I had to watch it twice because I blinked several times and missed the action. Yes vote, and thank for for speedrunning this little gem!
Okay, since TASing DOS games is pretty much a reality right now, what games do you think should be TASed first (or at least, not last)?
I'd love to see a TAS of the following games:
1. Metal Mutant - this underrated game is great visually, it's not boring to watch even for those who haven't played it, and it's not repetitive. I'd love to see a TAS of it.
2. Fury of the Furries - an absolutely fantastic game which is hard to play and fun to watch. Unfortunately, it seems that there are some problems with emulating it via DOSbox (not sure, maybe it's just me).
3. Blackthorne - we have Another World, we have Flashback, why not this clone? The music is great, the game is not too repetitive and as far as clones go, this one is simply fantastic.
4. Wolfstein 3D & Spear Of Destiny - no need to comment, I guess...
5. Commander Keen series - it's pretty linear, but it's fun to watch. I wonder what kind of shortcuts could be found to make TASing these games better...
6. Dangerous Dave series - see point 5, but it's more interesting and tactically challenging, IMO
7. Supaplex - a TAS of the best Boulderdash clone ever should be CRAZY.
8. Micro Machines - why no TAS of this game? It's on the consoles, and I think it will be very watchable.
9. Crusader: No Remorse - simply interesting to play and watch.
10. Montezuma's Revenge - a port of a classic game. Not sure if anyone will enjoy it, but I think this game is great, especially for a classic.
11. TES: Daggerfall - for the game that has territory compared to real life Britain, it can be finished pretty quick... the question is - how quick?
12. Eye of the Beholder series - classic hack'n'slash RPG, visually stunning in its day.
13. Shadowcaster - hybrid of linear RPG and FPS, innovative and interesting.
14. System Shock 1 & 2 - no need to explain this one...
15. Dungeon Keeper (Gold) - this unique game definitely has a lot to offer both for TASing and viewing the result.
16. Syndicate - nuff said...
Games which probably aren't the best choice of TASing:
1. Cannon Fodder - with its tiny soldiers, a TAS of this game will simply be incomprehensible, I'm afraid.
2. RTS games such as Dune 2, Warcraft, C&C - Well, they're hard to TAS since there are so many strategies (which makes TASing them interesing), but I'm not sure whether they will be fun to watch. OTOH, a lot of people played the aformentioned games, so this will make TASes more welcome.
3. Covert Action - fantastic game, but simply too long and probably impossible to finish in any realistic amount of time (I mean, capturing all 26 masterminds?)
Your thoughts?
[Edit by Bisqwit: Merged into existing thread. We don't need multiple threads for the same topic…]
Definitely A+ for effort, but for anyone who didn't play the game it's boring. Nevertheless, I'd say it should be pubilshed - such an effort shouldn't be in vain.
Looks to me that this is non causa pro causa fallacy. How a TAS of a game that's not universally considered to be entertaining (plenty of games are like that, BTW) can hurt the overall well-being of this site?
I didn't say that, you did.
There are legitimate reasons why a movie can be rejected -- a run can be far from perfect, it can be boring (while the game allows for making a more entertaining run), etc. If you think the movie itself is bad, vote no and explain why you think so. If you think that the game is bad, please think twice before voting no -- maybe people who love this game will love the run. Such is the situation of Dead Fox -- this speedrun is simply breathtaking (I played this game and believe me, this is VERY impressive), and I was really happy to see it (too bad I can't vote for it yet).
Also, in my opinion, if you find megaman games so awful, there's nothing limiting you to go on the threads and express your distaste, if you state your reasons for doing so.
And the point of me going to Megamen threads and expressing my distaste about Megaman is... ? If people like Megaman, more power to them, why should I spoil their fun? It's not like they have done something bad to me, y'know. Besides, the existence of Megaman series and its speedruns doesn't bother me at all. Why should I spend time and effort voicing my negative opinion about something that doesn't affect me at all? I have better things to do in this life, believe me. ;)
The point is that burying runs of games you don't like gains you absolutely nothing, but gives a loss to those who like the game. IOW, you don't gain anything, while some other people lose. Don't you find it... wrong?
This game is good and some of its tunes are pretty good as well. I don't see the haters' point -- if you haven't played this game back in the days, why bother watching the speedrun and complaining about it? I was bored to tears after watching the supposedly "great" speedrun of Megaman posted on this site, literally falling asleep not once but four times, but it never crossed my mind to say that Megaman speedrun shouldn't have been made -- it's just that it is much more interesting for those who played Megaman back in the eighties. Same stuff is true for most games. You find this game boring and the music bad? It's easy -- don't play it and watch the run then, but don't bury it for those who care, OK?
I second the suggestion to make a run of Jurassic Park.
I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Battletoads & Double Dragon -- that would be a sight to watch. Seeing a run of Batman Returns would also be great. And Contra Force? Man, that was a great game! Not sure about how speedrunnable is New Ghostbusters 2, but it was a very fun game and I'd love to see a speedrun of it. Monster In My Pocket is definitely a game that should have its own run. A run of Gekitotsu Yonku Battle would be a blast to watch.
Also, what about the classics -- Battle City, Adventures Of Lolo, Karateka, Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Balloon Fight, Nuts & Milk, Bomberman 2, Lode Runner, Gun Smoke, Mappy, Wrecking Crew?
I'd also love to see runs of POW - Prisoners of War, Mighty Final Fight (2 players), Double Dragon 3 (2 players), Super Jetman, Robocop (including second and third Robocop games), Captain Planet and The Planeteers, Donald Land, Mitsume ga Tooru, Saint Seiya - Ougon Densetsu Kanketsu Hen and Terminator 2 - Judgment Day
All these games are very fun to play and watch (at least for those who played them...), so, as you can see, there still is a lot of NES games to speedrun. After all, it's not only about speed, it's also about entertainment, right?
