Great work, especially with the console verification! Since I've long forgotten how I went about my second run, how "reusable" were the inputs for each stage? Were they resistant to random elements?

Will you be TASing this "all missions" run? I'm not aware of a route myself, but I've asked around on the RTA discord.

Oh, I think I didn't see that post, sorry. Anyway, I basically re-attempted this on a whim and finished it in about 3 days. I'd be glad to collaborate with you on a subsequent attempt, especially with regards to those pesky moving platforms!

Finally finished watching. 3 times in the run, the player abruptly stops moving. Once in the contest area, another in desert, then on Liz island. Was it for luck manipulation? You mentioned that you walked instead of running through grass to advance the timer slower. Does that save time compared to just getting an encounter normally? I noticed it happened in Liz Island, and only in specific parts of the island. Why is that so? Sometimes, I notice you don't use the first Denjuu to attack, and instead seemingly do nothing, before attacking later. For instance, the Octorifle fight. Can you please explain what the strategy was? How did you plan for which Denjuu to recruit? I was initially confused on why you seemingly recruited the same Denjuu 3 times in the mountain, until much later they were used in the area next to it. That was actually quite clever. Despite the areas being very long in comparison to the sequel, the run was actually quite nice due to the music.
My response is a little late, but here goes anyway. Can't remember why I appeared to stop in the contest area, but I think it was because I picked something up (I don't know what). I stopped in the desert to trigger the battle and recruit the snake thing (high Attack). Don't recall where I stopped in Liz Island, sorry, but I imagine it's either of the aforementioned reasons. I believe I chose to walk in the last part of Liz Island because my encounter timer was almost at 800, and walking that last stretch allowed me to avoid one encounter. To be honest, I wasn't able to conclusively figure out whether walking or running would be faster over a long stretch of time. Pretty sure I used an Attack-Up boost for Octorifle, since it was going to be a long battle anyway. I only went out of my way to recruit Denjuu with high (close to max) base Attack and good type effectiveness against the upcoming boss. Hope that answers your questions.

Well, trying to get every trainer to disappear that way would probably be unfeasible, especially in dungeons with a lot of them. But perhaps the glitch could be used when there happens to be a trainer around while receiving a call. So I take it there's no way to intentionally trigger phone calls?

Updated. Are there are any videos of this phone glitch? That would save a massive amount of time.

Actually I did need Zold to be at full health (195 HP) since the boss does damage in rounds of 96. 195 HP lets me survive two rounds.
Twisted Eye wrote:
Using a full health potion or two in the Knight fight to keep yourself near or inside his hitbox could possibly make that one faster
I'd wanted to follow the RTA stationary strategy, but I thought the knight was easy enough to manoeuvre around so I thought I'd try to make it interesting by using Zold, who is stronger but lacks the range needed for the stationary strategy. It turns out to be about 13 seconds faster.

MaxHP Ups...do those affect anything else, like your damage? If it's just HP/MP, maybe a couple could be skipped to save time.
I luck manip'd for them whenever I could, just to see how many could be obtained in the run. It turns out a TAS probably only needs two of them, one for the Hand boss, and one for the last stretch of the game. Anyway I gave it a try on Gambatte SVN 344 of an older BizHawk version. Successfully finished the first boss without a crash. This run can be rejected if desired.

Damn, I didn't see that TAS! Guess I should've searched for the Japanese title. Well, so far I've just reached Mayonen Land. Things I did differently are: - run from the first random encounter (saves a bit of time) - pick up the Plastic Jacket (costs a bit of time) - skip the encounter in the Pond (saves time) I'm currently a couple hundred frames ahead (and my run further includes the GBA boot animation), but I think I'm a level lower. Don't know how this will turn out. If I manage to stay ahead after the first major boss, things should be smooth sailing. Edit: Well that didn't turn out so well. Even with the Plastic Jacket, 30 HP means I die after 2 hits from the second boss, Potmania. Guess the run was better planned than I thought...

Yeah I actually haven't figured out if it'd be faster to kill enemies or just run through them, so I wasn't entirely consistent with my decisions. I think this game has damage boost but I'm not sure. Only thing I know is that I need to die after the first boss, so I have to take damage before it. Anyway thanks for the comment.

Probably a dumb question, but - assuming the game behaves the same way on SameBoy and Gambatte - is there a way to copy the inputs from my SGB movie to a GB movie?

To be completely honest, TAStudio would crash every time upon loading the .tasproj if I used the GBC core. That's the only reason. But I suppose ThunderAxe posted a good enough reason too...

Don't think I've seen this game mentioned. It's a Japan-only RPG similar to the Mario and Luigi series. Attacks involve timing based minigames which can be easily rigged, though I haven't found out how to make enemies miss. Virtually all random battles can be skipped. Battle example: https://youtu.be/PuG14v3FmDM?t=145 You get free weapons after each boss. Collecting "Pacifiers" around the world earns you weapons as well, though I don't think they're worth the time. From my experience so far, the Volcano weapon seems to be the best in terms of damage per time. List of weapons: https://www.gamefaqs.com/gba/565819-tomato-adventure/faqs/18650 (ctrl-f "-demiru") For now I'll play through the game once to get a feel for it. It's very linear game so minimal route planning is required.

Wasn't the Sleep on Hidden Vein (2h27 in the encode) a little bit overkill ? Other than that, it looks really well planned and done.
Yes, I really wanted to avoid that one, but if I hadn't used Sleep, the White Monk would have revived the Blue Mage. And the Blue Mage is a pain in the ass to kill - the only reliable way to kill him is through his own Roulette.
Orange Claw Hammer wrote:
Using the long-animation sleep move to hit only 1 or 2 enemies, having allied units wait when it seems like they could've done something useful, etc
An entire turn with the Sleep animation takes about 16 seconds. An enemy turn lasts at least 12 seconds, sometimes up to 16 or 18. So as long as you get to deny at least two enemy turns, Sleep will usually be worth it. There's definitely room for improvement though, like for the tricky White Monk mentioned above. In almost all instances where I had units wait, I tried my best to make sure there was no better action that could be done. In this respect I consider this run a significant improvement over my first attempt (also on my YT) which had many more waited turns. Again, there's definitely still room for improvement. And yes, I simply cannot bear to watch/play this game at normal speed anymore...

I simply used the units with the highest attack power since that's pretty much the only way to beat them. The second Warrior could have been stronger than the Assassin, but he was significantly underleveled at that point - I think he was 2 to 3 levels lower, which corresponds to a rough difference of 20 damage.

On BizHawk 2.1.0 (btw, anyone have an idea why the About in TAStudio is greyed out?), attempting to save input to macro outputs the following:

I omitted the loaded assemblies since they're so long. I'll post them if necessary. I apologise if this is something trivial, but I never faced this issue before 2.0.

Sorry for the inactivity. I've submitted my 2nd attempt. I replaced the Humans with Vieras this time. Almost every segment was improved, except for Totemas and final bosses, where I took longer due to lower levels. http://tasvideos.org/forum/t/19420 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvTbUXnGqpI The combo idea could be interesting, seeing how I have two Warriors that can benefit from the Mythril Sword. JP at the end game, however, is far from 10, so I don't know how well that would go. Edit: I recently considered using Aim: Vitals, which has a 5/101 chance of reducing enemy HP to 1. Unfortunately it doesn't work on bosses. Edit 2: By my calculations, Combo would make the final bosses slightly faster, but: a) at the cost of a much slower Materite Now (Totemas would use up JP, and the enemies start very far away from you), and much more menuing/re-equipping/AP watching b) only the Estreledge Bangaa really benefits from the 5x multiplier - everyone else does <30 damage due to their low levels c) it would be a one-time use, so only one of the final bosses (preferably Li-Grim, of course) would be faster Granted, it could potentially take Li-Grim from a ~8HKO to an easy 2HKO. I'm just not sure if it's worth all that extra time.

Temp encode can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvTbUXnGqpI Also, I neglected to remove all the empty frames after the last input, so the time of the last input is more like 2:49:51. I will upload an edited bk2 file if necessary. Sorry about that.

Yes, but I'm not interested in such a run. If I were to do this game, I'd only use the pachisi glitch and nothing more.

Facing doesn't affect damage. I never bought consumables; I was selling them. Yes, my laws were not planned out optimally. Time was wasted due to bad laws at Desert Patrol, Hidden Vein and To Ambervale - the last set of laws is particularly horrid. Antilaws could be a great idea, but I'll need to check if story missions give out Antilaw cards. Famfrit is Magic based, and Montblanc stops gaining significant Magic after switching out of Black Mage, so I doubt Famfrit would be useful past Diamond Rain. The second Human (Rooster) became useless towards the end, so I'm definitely scrapping him, or replacing him with someone more useful. However, having a party of 5 (initial 4 + Bangaa from Dueling Sub) makes me ineligible for Race Wanted missions, so I'll have to find another way to get a recruit. Gadgeteers have abysmal base Speed, so I don't think that's a good idea. It takes Montblanc a bunch of +2 Speed gains (as a Thief) and +15 (Tiptaptwo) to just be faster than the main Bangaa. Kotetsu can be obtained very early (Type 2 = earliest after Desert Peril). And I agree, the Jagd Hunt turtle was terrible. Again, the only sane way to get an Assassin is through Race Wanted, so that would require me to rethink the party, especially since Huntmoon starts only on the 61st day. But Assassins are that good, so I just might consider... What enemies do you have in mind for Poison? None of the early game enemies struck me as exceedingly difficult. Sick Knuckles arrive at the first shop upgrade (in my run, after Antilaws).g From what I've read about RTA runs, Lini and Cheney are the only ones worth getting. Cheney is much more useful due to his ranged Ultima, 4 Move, better Speed and better weapon (Gastra Bow > Pearl Blade), but he requires a bit more time to obtain. Right now I'm considering the following options: - initial 4 + Dueling Sub Bangaa + Cheney - Marche + Montblanc + initial Bangaa + Dueling Sub Bangaa + Viera Wanted Assassin + Cheney Thank you all for your comments.
