This is the best thing I've ever seen on tasvideos, period. Not only it deserves a "yes" vote, but IMHO, also a star or a moon, or whatever is the tier for perfect things such as this one.

I've seen it a few times, thanks) I even rewatched it a few days ago, trying to see if I missed any glitches that would prove helpful for Sonic 3 speedrunning. It's actually quite hard to find anything regarding Sonic 3 alone, since S3&K is so much better in every aspect, but I read this whole topic as well and found a few very useful tips) I also watched every video on Sonic Center, but a lot of them are S3&K as well.

Thanks for the explanation =) From now on I'll be starting a new movie each time I make another try. The glitch is actually quite surprising and makes perfect sense. Super Sonic flag is something alright xD Too bad it doesn't do anything really useful for Tails. While I was speedrunning I happened to find a lot of strange glitches in Sonic 3. For example, if you do this glitch https://youtu.be/rJrEpfby_yg?t=9m31s (shown in the video on the left, which is my run for the 1/8 of the tournament) in the wrong way, starting moving left while offscreen too early, you can either softlock the game, or the screen will go dark and either start the multiplayer music or there'll be the sound of counting the score, and the score will be so high it'll give you two one ups and a continue, and after the invisible score is done counting, you'll be loaded back into act 2 of MG, but the background will be all glitchy. I believe that this glitch is actually a screen of a perfectly completed special stage, that can get the same effect if you collect all the rings in it.

Hey, guys! I have a very worrying problem. I happen to stumble upon a very strange glitch in Sonic 3 (Sonic 3 only, rom: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - U[!]). http://rghost.ru/8JL6Xx7mm here's a savestate in which this glitch is present. I'm currently training for a Sonic 3 tournament and while training I sometimes trigger this glitch. So what's the glitch is about: in the glitch state Tails can break wall by simply walking through them, without any need for spindashing, like Knuckles. The other thing that glitch breaks is invincibility monitors. If you break a monitor nothing will happen. No invincibility. And also this glitchy state remains until you reset the console/emulator. It stay even between zones and acts. Even after dying or entering a special stage. This particular one happened when I chose the second save slot and started a new game with Tails. And I figured out this glitch is present after I've beaten the first act's mini-boss. I spindashed through the first wall on my way, then there's another wall that leads to a special stage right after a tunnel. I switched to running phase instead of rolling, meaning not to break the wall, but it broke anyway and I got into the specail stage. That's when I realised the glitch activated again. It's just driving me nuts. This glitch is so irritating when you do a live speedrun. Does anybody have any idea as of what on earth triggers this nightmare?

Sorry for not being clear, I didn't mean I can't connect to yours, I meant I'm a web-developer without any ftp servers of mine, what a poor developer I am xD I connected to yours without a single problem instantly =) And it's 14% done. Hope it won't take long.

If you know what is FTP, here is a temp account Hostname: yamato.averkov.net Username: zenon Password: 743124 Read+write access is available for anyone. Web access: http://yamato.averkov.net/
Sure I do, thanks! I'm a web-developer myself, have to use those constantly) Don't have access to any right now though. Uploading now, I'll let you know when it's done uploading.

Would it possible to transmit your same encode file to me somehow so I couldtry upload a copy to my own channel, please? I don't care where people view it or if other want to use it on their channel, I would just like to have it available on mine for the sake of completeness.

Thanks for adding our encode to the topic, but could you please swap it with this one? We figured we had an audio desynch in the end so we fixed it. Link to video

Sure a "yes" vote! Me and my friend Razor were so amazed by this run, great job! Also, here's our encode of this great run. Not the atlas one, but hope that'll do =) Link to video

Sorry for stepping in with this, but just wanted to share this little piece I came up with. Goal is to make all GOAL signs appear in the S3&K bonus area. Not a speedrun, but still an (I hope) enjoyable superplay. Link to video

Hello there Sonic TAS experts! Razor and I have stumbled upon an optimisation problem in our ringless S3&K run. Please, can you help is finding a solution? Is there any way to get Sonic killed in the very beginning of Act 2 without waiting for the time to run out so we can skip the tube with rings? Anything would help. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry if this has been posted, but could this way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTuAlx4EdZw be used by Sonic and Tails to bypass Act 2? I think it could lead to a little improvement. Sorry if I'm wrong or if this has already been discussed.

Thanks! As for new techs, I highly doubt it. The game is nicely programmed, so we only found one glitch to make Knuckles go through objects using Tails as his partner, but I don't see a way where it could be useful to obtain any extra speed.

Link to video Finally we get back to our minimum rings challenges. Although this time it's not gonna make a zero ring run, but we still hope it will be nonetheless enjoyable to watch. We also tried to make it as interesting as possible using different characters if it's not essential to use some particular powers. Ocean Base Act 3 - 3 rings are located in the narrow path, which can be hypothetically avoided using Knuckles, but he can't avoid three rings in the beginning of the level. Twinkle Snow Act 3 - 1 ring blocks a hole, the alternative path has three unavoidable rings in the way. So we choose the least of two evils. Cyber Track Act 1 - 3 rings are placed in the way along the transporters. Act 2 - 1 ring is in the narrow path. Act 3 - 8 rings are collected because of the transporters. Altar Emerald - the 3 rings are collected during a cutscene. Total of 19 rings. The goal was to create something interesting to watch, if you're looking for a pure speed optimization madness, this probably isn't your thing.

The image on the header says "Tool Assisted Superplay". Not speedrun. It's basically the same thing, and at the same time they are quite the opposite. So we're doing runs which no human can ever do in their life. Proving impossible to be possible. TAS tools are helping us to plan every move to make it happen. I see nothing wrong, since as every other TASer we just make the impossible possible. Granted we have no time or knowledge to make those runs as optimized as possible, but many people still find it very fun and entertaining. As long as there are such people on this site, and I know there are, we will keep posting to make them at least a little bit more happy. I really don't think it's crime. We're not stealing spotlites from anyone, not submitting our unoptimized movies. We're just sharing our movies with people, who enjoy them.

The only way to see an optimized run is for someone who knows a whole lot about optimization joins us. As for me, I find it very boring to optimize something. My personal taste and joy lies within creating ideas about ways to make the challenge possbile to complete. Searching for glitches and making the run entertaining.

Sadly, it's not possible (at least for the two of us) to clear the whole S3&K with Knuckles without using arrow buttons. So we decided to make a little bonus video with the walkthough of the levels in which it is doable at all. Hope you enjoy it =) Link to video These are the places which made our walkthrough six acts short: [/video]

Is this possible in S3&K, as well as just S&K? I love the concept, anyway; it's very different from the other runs, and if it were optimized, it'd almost certainly be accepted. Great testrun/routeplan run even as it is.
Yeah, we tried to think of something fresh, yet doable and this came up. But this concept is quite tricky since one can't actually prove it possible until they try. Sometimes you just look through the map and everything seems fine, but you stumble upon a tiny problem you can't get past no matter how hard you try. We started off with the idea of doing a S3&K run, but there was a problem in Hydrocity Zone Act 2 in the very begining. In the place where fans get you up high. The only thing that is needed to be done is press left for one single frame, but it's definitely prohibited in our run by the rules we set. And we have no idea how to avoid this problem, since you can't even glitch through walls as it requires pressing arrows as well. We are pretty lucky to be able to clear at least the whole S&K game. A lot of things worked to our advantages.

Fantastic. I would vote yes on this if it were submitted, for sure. Lots of creative solutions.
Thanks =) Although we wouldn't even dream of submitting something since we lack optimization A LOT xD

We've stumbled upon a tiny yet very annoying problem in our "A,B,C"-only aka arrowless aka broken D-pad challenge. There is a rather imconvenient situation in Flying Battery Zone Act 2 There is a splitting passageway which leads to two almost identical and terrible routs. And thouse routes have that particular problem along them. The highest we could get was 2574 and you need to be at 2572 to squeeze through that little gap in the ceiling. During our attempts we came up with a few decent ways to gain speed using jumps and gliding only, but in these partivular places they've only got us that far. So here we are, in need of help because thouse two pixels of height are almost the only obstacle in trying to make a successful arrowless walkthrough of S&K part. We'll be very grategul to anyone who can help or at least give it a try. Thank you so much! EDIT: We TASed it so hard, but scrambled those two pixels with terrifying precision. So - problem solved :)

And I actually made my version of this level. I used level-select, so no power-ups for me. As you can see, a few places could've been improved if I had a mask. Link to video

Do you mean that now it's alright for this game to finally have its moment of glory and a TAS? These maps sure look helpful, although I have no idea of who would possibly create a remake of this run, which is pretty good, but still needs a tiny bit of improvement. Man, wish I didn't have a full-time job and a side project to work on. 'cause I have a feeling I might've pulled this TAS off, but I have too little time and too little knowledge about optimization. It's really not my stuff xD I'm good in finding glitches and optimal routes though. And I sure wish the origianl author could make another improved version.

Actually I like this game a lot more then the Genesis version. Hardcore rules) I think Genesis one is a bit less complicated, thus less interesting. I like the way the author got all the diamonds in that little amount of time, though I also came up with a way to shorten the time spent on 5th level. Me and my friend Razor tested it out and we both proved it possible to cut at least one whole minute and five seconds off. You just need to get hurt by a bird and thus you'll be sent flying higher onto the platform where the monkey is sitting. And voilà! No need for that huge and time-consuming river journey. If the author was to do that improvement, I think it would be just great.
