Like I said earlier, there's already two any % runs on the site, both aiming for speed but one clearly faster due to glitching. Why didn't the previous Any % get obsoleted when the faster one was created?
It seems a very similar situation that there is the non glitched low % and the glitched low % but in this case the goals are arbitrary or diffuse or whatever, when I think the majority have agreed this is not the case. It's the fact there seems to be some senseless restriction on the number of categories that's causing the trouble, I ask once again kindly, what's the issue with another link to click on the site?
I can't see why this run is seen as being the most redundant. I personally think having 2 any% runs one going for ingame time then another going for realtime is far more incredulous.
Edit: Whilst I still maintain that additional categories wouldn't be a bad idea, to the people who argue there is already too many, how do you feel about having 2 any% runs on the site, both aiming for speed with one clearly faster?
One of better points thrown out so far.
The speed booster is abused (for good reason) a lot in the other runs, whereas this run skips it in favor of keeping as low a % as possible whilst not abusing game breaking Out of Room glitches. As such it introduces new techniques to progress through a large portion of the game, creating one of the more original SM runs i've seen in a long time. As said, all the new improvements may not be blatantly obvious to the public as a whole, but I think its been mentioned many times the target audience is people at least familiar with SM or TAS'ing in general, in which case they would be able to appreciate the high level of skill and optimization in the run.
Personally, if a game is as highly TASable as SM, and has quite a large following (Judging by a 180page topic supporting it) what is the issue with having more categories? I honestly cannot see why the site would suffer by adding the traditional low % category once again. At the end of the day, its just another page or another link for someone to click. Whats the damage?
I was selective in comparing to the 6% run as that was the run which obsoleted the 14% category; in an attempt to convey that the run was different enough not to warrant obsoletion. I didn't compare that point to the other runs as it wasn't relevant to my arguement. I could have been clearer in that though, apologies.
There's honestly been so much running around in circles and pointless stuff added to this thread. The members here are from what i've gathered thus far, intelligent, literate people.
When Saturn makes mention of a "legal/legit" run, it's blatantly obvious to someone like me who isn't a hardcore follower of metroid to know what he's talking about. Playing "Legally" through the game, i.e taking out the intended bosses and mini bosses, as opposed to skipping the majority of the game going OoB isn't a hard concept to grasp. But it is being brought up repeatedly, mostly to have a go at him as it seems. I strongly doubt he's calling other runs "Illegal" Its just being used as a convenient term.
Im my personal opinion, the run is different enough to warrant it's own category once again, the 6% glitchfest is miles different from conventional boss to boss approach.
It'd be unlikely a random passer by who has never played/encountered metroid would stumble across the video and watch it, so it's pretty fair to assume the target audience are either interested in TAS's or the game itself. I would have thought they'd find more interest in watching the games bosses being demolished as fast as possible in the way they remembered playing the game instead of watching minutes of the X-ray Scope.
At the same time, I think its unfair to claim Mmbossman rejected the submission out of any bias or feelings towards Saturn. The reasons he listed, whilst I may not agree with them all are totally understandable and well explained. If he was as impulsive and rash as to use his power in that way, he most likely wouldn't have became a judge in the first place.
Sorry to spew random thoughts without any structure, just wanted to contribute after watching so long. I really do think it'd be a shame to let this TAS die though, it was the best Super Metroid run i've seen in a bloody long time and as much as people might not think the world of Saturn (Me included) He has talent.
So far, i'd have to say I also agree with what Fabian put forward.
Haha, thanks for clearing that up. I still can't get my head around the two little black protrusions that pop out the bottom of them though!
If it's only going to be around 4 minutes long then i'd go for it mate, it has mad graphics and would be short enough to keep the viewer entertained in my opinion.
This game looks absolutely insane, do the enemies turn into mustaches?
It reminds me of the old Mario game with the pipes and the crab like enemies you stomped.
I'm not sure how entertaining it would be, but the game looks crazy enough to keep me interested. Good luck!
Methodical robotic thinking will most likely result in the subpixel and small frame optimisations.
Thinking outside the box is where the crazy tricks will be discovered! Keep at it and good luck!
Edit: Grammar and poor word choice.
I'm sure it will be special Saturn, I wasn't trying to be a sarcastic twat although it probably came across similarly.
I think SuperJupi nailed it though, it would have been mindblowing back when it was discovered.
I'm not sure what your motivation for the run is, but it can't be for the good of the community or the like as you would have shared your work and probably aided some of the more commited members working on it currently.
And I think it's also kinda unfair to claim Moozooh rips off your moves or techniques, he's consistently shown in the past that he has an uncanny knack to fuck the game over five ways from Friday, I'm pretty sure he could have discovered whatever he says he has.
I hate conflict and always sit on my arse in a backseat position, but when I read that you'd deliberatly mislead people with your frame counts to try and preserve your own movie/pride I just wanted to chirp in.
That all said and done, I do still look forward to your TAS greatly as i'm sure it will still be as impressive, if not more so than your previous work.
I've been itching to play this so bad, just waiting for the GB release to hurry up and arrive.
Strangely, when I read your first post I couldnt see the sword for the life of me. After you stated it actually was there, I went back and seen it quite easily. Power of suggestion?
I really do hope Saturn's run is the most mind blowing thing i've seen from the site.
After all the drama caused by the methods used, the bragging and boasts and then, if I understood correctly, intentionally lying about frames he'd saved incase other people managed to perfect those rooms in their own runs.
I hope it's special.
Fantastic WIP, it still amazes me more than a year after seeing my first TAS of this game (Which I found mindblowing when I seen it) people are still finding all these ways to shave off the frames.
It's a shame how some significant time savers could probably have been discovered months ago had some people been more forthcoming in their discoveries but I salute those who do share. Well done guys.
I'm not too sure what point you were trying to make Bolt, but I totally agree with DragonFangs.
I don't pick up guitar hero when I fancy a shot of the guitar, and I wouldn't go play a DDR machine because I felt like dancing.
I find it a totally different experience, the one game that does seem relatively similar would be DrumHero or the Drum equivalent in Rockband I guess.
They're just hugely entertaining(In my opinion) games that have a different interface than your usual mouse/pad/keyboard/whathaveyou.
Everyone will have different views on the subject, my dad still can't get his head around the fact someone would spend hours trying to play songs with a kid-on guitar. On the other side of the coin, I have friends who would be far more impressed with a 100% streak on cliffs of dover on GH3 than seeing the song played on a real guitar (Insanity in my eyes, the song's a work of art) but hey, some people just don't have any interest in musical instruments.
I totally agree with you and can play quite a few of the non insane instrumentals on the game on a real guitar. It's just one of those games that require skill and practise to get good at, and if a lot of mates enjoy playing it but you can outplay them all, it never gets old thrashing a song to everyones amazement.
