The one question I've not seen answered - is it possible for RTA runners to pull this off? From what I remember, it would be a 1 key + 1 star run (unless someone figured out a reliable way to get past the sub). However, I'm curious if, now that its possible, if someone is developing an RTA route.
RTA runners are doing 0 star runs for years now. The trick sucks, but it's not impossible.
This new stuff, however, is out of question for any RTA runner.
For now. I wouldn't totally rule out finding an RTA viable moat skip.
Opie, making TASes just to practice isn't something anyone has a problem with. I'd suggest simply making runs, and showing them in the relevant forums, or on a YouTube channel, and not submitting them, you could try TASing games TASed by others too to see how close you can get.

ABC is fascinating on a technical level, but would only make for an interesting run if the "walk in place for 10 hours" stuff is cut out.
"Max coins" has no entertainment value on any level and would be received incredibly poorly, especially for Super Mario 64 and its magical ability to gain twenty times more votes than 95% of the submissions we normally get.
Just doing it any% would cut all of the stupid long glitches out IIRC.

That video demonstrates that the moat skip is possible, so finding a faster way into VCUtM probably wasn't a priority yet. It's clear in the video that the wing cap is not a fast way in, since they indeed needed to collect 10 stars (the video skips the collection of those stars, but the HUD shows 10 stars).
I think he's referring to the "zigzag" strategy, before Tyler Kehne found a quicker route.

I guess I'm used to pannenkoek's PU navigation where he seem to have to walk on the spot for a while to move, presumably due to the lack of an A button.
IIRC no a button makes losing speed far far slower or something.
Never forget that packer is gonna upload the TAS to his channel and not share a penny with the Japanese TASers, again, btw.

I'm not taking a dig at snark here. I just mean to point out that you're being really unfair there.
Plus whatever the arrangement is the Japanese TASers are clearly fine with it.
How well have you guys figured out what causes crashes in PUs? If you have to constantly console test and re-test parts of the run, that'll surely make a ton of extra work.
Edit: Sorry to clarify, I was talking about a 120 star run in terms of a ton of extra work.

Surely it should be based on if the faster text makes up for (in entertainment) for not understanding it, so it depends on things like the amount of it, and how likely the viewers are to remember it.

The prevailing thought is it's not an exploitable glitch, but instead it was a cosmic ray bitflip. The Y position does not seem to have changed to the ceiling, but instead to a value that is a single bit flip from the original Y value.
The solution is obvious. We just need someone to code a universe emulator, and then someone can make a TAS in which Super Mario 64 is played on an emulated physical N64 and the RNG of the universe is manipulated to produce the cosmic ray consistently (the system requirements for such an emulator could be a problem, but should not be much worse than BizHawk).
You'd only need to emulate the console and cosmic rays, QRNG is hard to emulate though.
So looking forard to this.
