I voted "no". I don’t see anything interesting in this submission besides a technical demonstration that could be carried out near-identically in pretty much any NES game.

I do not know what is the nature of the problem you are having, but what I used a 8192-byte BIOS file that begins with the following hexdump:

Ok. I was kind of hoping for a link to a binary, but I’ll see if I can figure out to compile the binary on my system (Linux) again. Bitrot is a thing. And this needs to be 32-bit, I figure. EDIT: Alright, I got my video-encoding working again.

Where can I find an emulator that plays this movie? The YouTube upload is 30 fps, and I need a 60 fps one…

A reminder: ACE is when you either deliberately or accidentally construct assembler instructions, that did not exist in the game originally, somewhere in the memory, which are then executed by the processor. If your movie results in the processor executing instructions that were not part of the game program or which could not be generated by the game at runtime without explicit design by the player, then it counts as ACE. There are games which compose instructions in RAM at runtime, and those instructions then get executed, but only if those instructions are composed from joypad inputs somehow without restriction to what those instructions might be, then that is ACE.

Voting no. I feel that this movie did not bring anything new to the table compared to the minimum A presses movie, and the route did not diverge significantly from any% except for a couple of pits in 8–1 and 8–2. I found the turtle-pipe-climb in 8–4 interesting though. While most of the movie did 1-frame A-press jumps, there were a couple of several-frame A presses too, which made the movie category somewhat inconsistent.

J.Y. is not a pseudonym of mine, even though those are my initials. Felt like that’s something I should say. To the author: Good job! Aside from some wastefully thrown candies, the run looked quite optimized, although I did not understand some of the intentional deaths.

As a player of two published Lunar Ball runs, this looks impressive enough to be published.

Forget parallel universes, how about DIFFERENT TYPES OF GRAVITY?! Who the hell would've thought that Super Mario Bros., a game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, had different types of gravity for specific situations […]?
Apparently they thought that having varying gravity was an easier solution, than to limit differently in different situations the number of frames that holding an A button can generate thrust. As an added benefit, they got partial buoyancy in water for free with this scheme; where a smaller falling speed actually makes sense.

FWIW as the founder of TASVideos (even if I have been reduced to nothing but a cheerleader nowadays), I think the reason why we don’t automatically approve every new branch of a game is because there is potentially an infinite number of them. However, this run has a clear-defined goal, and the constraints are far from trivial, and the movie is already very optimized. Additionally, this run is very much at the core of what I set out this site to be. Impressive and entertaining speedruns that are far beyond human limits. If it were me, I would accept this run. As for setting a precedent for similar runs of other games: It didn’t happen with my walkathon run back in 2005, and I don’t think we should fear it now.

Very nice, especially 8–2. In 8–4, I was wondering, can’t you use the three goombas somehow to avoid a jump before the moving platform in the lava pit? Also: I didn’t know about the four different gravities! Interesting.

Failure. At 13:32 and 22:18 and 23:49 in the video, it accidentally erases some of the outlines, by using the paint tool one pixel off. In the picture at 27:25, it forgot to color one pixel between the rear feet. Granted, that’s not part of a dino, so it didn’t fail to color a dinosaur there, but… Nitpicking aside, fun video!

Why would that be such a bad thing in this context? Just draw a portion of the image.
That would certainly be an option. But if the subject is an animation, then you need an algorithm (or artistic decision) that decides which section of the screen to crop to. A static crop might not be the best choice.

What a wonderful run! Besides the primary glitch, you also showcased several visual glitches along the run, such as the first door graphics swapping for a frame, the game missing the opportunity for split-screen and consequently screen being jerked vertically, and Simon‘s feet showing through a door. And the movement was entertaining too. I especially liked your efficient and flashy use of the boomerang weapon.

While I did enjoy this run, the thought behind this category is an example of “you thought this is impossible, but you were wrong” category, which it fails to redeem. I would rather see a true no-hurt-enemies run rather than this compromise, even if it was much, much slower. Nonetheless, I am voting yes, because I enjoyed it.

In 4-2, the run fails to get the coins from the hidden coin block near the three goombas. Was there a reason to this? (If I had to guess, it was to maximize the time spent doing the more profitable warpzone loop.)

I don't agree with that. Tasvideos has made some political choices, and it's ok to do so. For example, using Creative Commons for movies, or allowing people to display their gender in the forum.
Man, the definition of 'political' is getting stretched so thin... Ok, tasvideos as a site does not (and imo should not) participate in any activism
I may remember wrong, but I think, TASVideos as a site has participated in activism: Back when I was the person at the helms, I once put a banner to raise awareness regarding some dangerous copyright law proposal thing (I forget the exact details). It was relevant, because it threatened the transmission of information on this site.

Political statements don’t belong in submission messages, especially if they are presented in forms of preaching. The same situation applies to religious statements. For example, if I had prefixed one or more of my submissions back in the day with this paragraph or something similar to it, how would you feel? ---- IMPORTANT MESSAGE You only have one life, and it may end at any moment. Tomorrow you might be run over by a car, or just have a brain aneurysm. Have you considered what happens after you die? Eternity is a long time. Not a small question. It is the most important question ever asked. In the Bible, Jesus said “whoever follows me shall have everlasting life”, and, “whoever is not obedient to the Son, shall not see life, but will have wrath of God upon them”. Jesus was and is the creator of the world, and will be the one who will eventually judge the eternal fate of every single person who ever lived, including you. Those whom he never knew, will be judged according to their deeds. And according to Romans 3:23, every single person who ever lived has transgressed against His will. Which side of the judgment will you be on? Jesus loves you and does not wish you to perish. He only wants you to repent your sins and to follow Him. Heed those words, and you shall be saved from the consequences of your own sinful nature. ---- I could easily say that I feel completely justified posting this. It is the most important question of your life ever, and under no circumstances reminding you of it can be wrong. Furthermore, not reminding you of that would be million times worse than not telling you that your house is on fire when it’s on fire. That’s the thing with politics and religion. Everyone thinks they are right about it and that everyone else’s viewpoints are objectively wrong. I have expressed my views about the BLM movement elsewhere, but regardless of my views on the topic, I can state that exactly as much as it would have been wrong for me to put those kind of messages in my TASVideos submissions, it is equally wrong to put political petitions in TASVideos submissions. It’s just not the right place for it.

Awesome and totally unexpected.
  • I was particular impressed by the new climbing strategies in Fireman and Elecman stages. Such a simple improvement and by no means a new technique, but very effective application. The beamless ladder-top zip is not new either; it is already mentioned at http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/NES/Rockman.html#LadderTricks as of revision 2 (2004-07-21 by me).
  • I was less impressed by the glitch in the Gutsman stage, although I totally did not expect it. (And similarly Iceman, Bombman, Wily1, Wily2)
  • Fun fact: I have not yet identified the cause of the split-screen effect. Why the game renders that way, and why it persists across stages. I think it is related to the ending; this is also reinforced by the energy bars disappearing. But if it was that simple, the ending itself would be unaffected.
  • Nice homage of my TAS, using the accelerating teleports in Wily3.
