Thanks for the elaborate response, Marzojr! I knew about most of the tricks you mentioned; the exception is the one that disables zipping in FBZ1, I didn't know such a thing was possible! :O After all these years I'm still learning new things about this game! The glitches and tricks that only skip small sections -falling through a floor to a level just below, for example- should be fine, my goal is determining which ones allow for breaking entire levels. personal opinions fall into the matter, which makes things even harder. By the way, I wish you all luck with the Knuckles any%, it should be top priority since the Tails% was made in 2014. I'd love to help, but my experience with TAS is near 0. I'll see if I get to it in the near future.

That Sonic 1 run had a very ambiguous goal, and the Sonic 2 run wasn't different enough from the any% to be entertaining. The run that should be taken as a reference is this one, actually published!: http://tasvideos.org/3378S.html This "no zips" run by Aglar has a clearly defined goal -zipping can be defined without ambiguity- and entertains the public by showing much more of a very broken game. The goal of "no zipping, underflows or slope glitch" would certainly bring new life to TASing Sonic 3K, where almost every level is broken by one of those techniques. There are a lot of other techniques to use, with their own great entertainment value. After the recent Knux treasure hunting runs, I'm just eager to see runs that show more of the games :P

Congratulations for your recently submitted TAS, Evil_3D! It was a pleasure to watch it (especially Oil Ocean 2 :O), and I'm sure whatever you do with this game is going to be even better! By the way, now that "alternate goal" classic Sonic TASes are becoming more commonplace, I want to know if there is interest amongst the experts on making a "Glitchless" category TAS for this game, akin to Aglar's Sonic 1 "no zips" run. I think this game would benefit the most from it... but it would take the most work to do, of course. Speedruns.com defines "Glitchless" for Sonic 1 speedruns as "no zipping, no underflow, no slope glitch and no clipping through solid floors", Zurggriff should know since he has a few RTAs submitted on that page. I think we could apply this to Sonic 3K, maybe without the "clipping through solid floors" since it is arbitrary and hard to define accurately. Zipping, underflows and the slope glitch are the causes for most broken levels, so a category without them would bring new life to classic Sonic TASing. What do you think?

Very nice run! Voting yes of course. By the way, you can collect a star in 8-2, have you tested if it's faster?

A suggestion that's just come to my head: instead of saying certain runs are "better than others", we could use symbols to mark the best thing(s) each movie has to offer. Viewers should be able to put the mouse over the symbol to se a short description of it, or click it to see a list with all of them (like the current "Tiers" page). With this system: -Stars could still be used for the absolute best movies of the site, like they've always been. -Movies with a high entertainment value could be still marked with moons, and other fields like speed would get other symbols; for example: a Sonic shoe for speedy movies (either by time or by character movement), a wrench for technical feats... - Symbols would be combinable. For example, a fast AND technical run would get both a Sonic shoe and a wrench, etc.

Nice! :P Levels are getting way less linear from now on, let's see how they turn out. About Act 3, is there some special strategy to TAS it, or is it just holding right and jumping?

I definitely think entertaining shouldn't be the only deciding factor: there are a lot of movies of excellent quality that don't get accepted because they're repetitive or dull, but they're still good examples of TAS. Now, is this basically the tier sistem you're suggesting? I understand it this way: -Star: best movies in the site, highlights. -Moon: entertaining movies (though not of star quality). -Vault: pure speed runs, regardless of everything else.

Well, I'd say the most consistent point to stop the time in Boss Acts is when the boss music stops (in other words, when you lose control of Sonic), but I guess that's okay. Thanks a lot for the quick answer!

It's nice to see people workin in such an awesome Sonic handheld! Keep up the good work! By the way, isn't there a way to measure in-game time in Boss Acts? Or at least an approximation, it's already pretty awkward that the game doesn't show it.

Zenon, are you going to try doing this with Knux, wherever it's possible? His gameplay is very different of Sonic's, it'd be cool to watch!

It seems to me that there's room for roughly 3 runs of the game.
In such case, "No cannons" seems the best choice to me. Otherwise, a Mini Mario-only run would also be nice to see IMO, his floaty jumps could be used for some awesome tricks!

^The recently rejected "No cannons" run would surely show something different, and other than that... I'd have to see a "No coins" TAS to judge it, but I don't think it'd make much difference from the any%.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1ccD8KGMNk&feature=context-chv Have you seen these videos uploaded by youtuber ApachaiHapachai? They're amazing! Anyone wants to try an optimized no-Rings TAS of any level?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdthW4UIV_M&feature=plcp Here's a Small-only run for reference (No powerups actually, it also avoids Stars). In my opinion, this run isn't very fun to watch after having watched the any%, there aren't a lot of differences besides more levels. What I think would be interesting is a Mini Mario run: you'd obtain a Mini Mushroom right at the beginning (it may require starting from a saved game) and keep that form until the end, which means no deaths and no additional powerups except Stars. It'd make levels a bit more interesting with those high, floaty jumps!

^If that's just micro-clips, there's absolutely no reason for it to be considered. Getting that nitpicky isn't going to help, a no-BS run doesn't have to be technically perfect, it'd get overly complicated, and perhaps more boring. I'm now very determined to end this nightmare, so I'm giving you all a list of the most predominant/biggest run-breakers, IMO the only ones that need to go: -No zips, no horizontal underflow. -No gravity-related bugs. -Players don't (pass through terrain/get ejected in the wrong direction). -Player 1 (Sonic) doesn't go over the top of the level/screen (the latter for looping maps). -Player 1 (Sonic) doesn't pass through offscreen sprites. -Players don't move during the intro or any score tallies. -No death. Feel free to reword these sentences or point out any problem they might cause. Other things that may look bad, but are just one-offs, shouldn't hurt the whole movie, such as the AIZ2 cutscene skip (doesn't even count as in-game time) and the Knux fight (is also dumb without Tails, as seen in Sprintgod's). I know many of you want more "low-glitch" Sonic runs, please consider this!

^Okay, I think a pretty good wording for that could be "Player doesn't get through terrain". Through is the key word, it allows terrain blocks to eject the player normally, but not to let him pass through to the other side, which is what we don't want. Someone tell me if there's any problem with this. And, by the way, the full list of objectives for a good looking run would be rather long...

Rather than going by actual, technical glitches, I think we should consider things that look alright and things that don't, regardless of glitchiness. For example, any watcher wouldn't mind high slope jumps, because they don't look silly and add style to the run, but going through walls, of course, doesn't look well at all. The problem now is writing objectives that would take care of the silly techniques, because forbiding zips still leaves room for going through walls, as seen in Aglar's run.

http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10210&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 Here's a topic about a Glitchless Sonic 3 run from two years ago, but it generated many problems (What is exactly a glitch?) and I don't think marzojr intends to revive it at the moment.

Hey Marzojr, how's that Newgame+ TAS going? Do you think there's some way to use DMTM's recently found zip in MGZ2? Link to video

What I've seen here is awesome, Maria, but I'd like to know your vision of a 100% run of Sonic Advance: Will you play with all four characters? And will you play the special stages with everyone or just Knuckles? All of this could feel a little repetitive, since the levels are the same for all characters, and only Sonic needs the emeralds to fight the extra boss. I fully support this, but it may not seem like a good choice of run.

You have some great points there, Paused, that could work quite well! I really want to see someone interested in TASing Sonic CD, but as WST said, this game's physics are completely different to those of the main Sonic trilogy, so not many TASers will be up to it, I'm afraid. It's even difficult to find Sonic CD superplays on freaking youtube!

And you were right. But skipping the holograms would be throwing away entertainment potential, and wouldn't look "complete" to me.
