please don't use the "code" tag to post urls. you can post the link directly, or use the "url" tag, to render the link clickable, which "code" prevents you from. also, even with copy-pasting the link, it does not seem to work. more "unreachable" than 404'd.

I do it because I don't like referers.

I find assembly quite logical, actually. You have to do everything one step at a time, like a proof or something.
Indeed... it's like you're trying to teach something to a monkey.

I like them, so please use instead of [code].

This is the kind of post which makes me download a illegal copy of a nice dictionary.

Shouldn't that be "an illegal copy"? *Goes back to corner*

Why? For reference: I honestly wish to know why P_S dislikes referrers, and I have always been a fan of brevity. This was not a case of spamming to increase my postcount. For evidence you can take the fact that I have edited this explanation in, rather than making it as a reply to a later statement.

the original link he posted seemed to be an illegal site (well I guess because the link never worked for me), so I guess he wants his post to be non-retrievable from whomever his "paranoia" makes him scared of. (please note I'm not judging, rather joking.) besides, his nickname is pirate_sephiroth :)

Please, PLEASE tell me this was a derailment of another topic that was moved, and not a thread made to specifically berate P_S over something so incredibly trivial, in what could have easily been a private message. Pirate, if you make your post do something like this:
h[b][/b]ttp://www.website.com
It won't automatically refer: http://www.website.com

How come the "Disable HTML in this post" option doesn't do that?

I did NOT create that topic, it has been created by an admin (probably Bisqwit ?) from the "ASM" topic. my post was an anwser to a post from pirate_sephiroth where he posted a link to some site, but between the "code" tags. I had to manually copy-paste it. I was surprised too, JXQ, and I hope you don't think that I have anything against pirate_sephiroth, I love you guys :) // edited : changed the first post accordingly.

Because an automatic link is not HTML. Also, [b][/b] is BBCode, not HTML, so it will not appear either.

Well, referrers, cookies and those little forms where you have to write a lot of crap just to do a silly download stores a lot of information, and, you know, that information can be compiled and then sold and blah blah blah... Nothing comes for free... you pay for stuff with your personal info, which is taken from you without your agreement. I always block referrers, cookies and javascripts, except for a few sites, like this one. It's not any kind of paranoia... it's really a boycott, like the topic says... heheh <Zurreco> since when was pirate_sephiroth's paranoia worth a few seconds of our time? hahah!

But... I don't see how referrers are a part of that...

well, it's a way to trace web-browsing, so it's another threat to our privacy.

I stand by my statement. While it may sound like a general sloth on my part, having to go to the trouble of undoing the trouble that someone goes to to not "pay for stuff with your personal info" is slightly aggravating. Having to copy/paste a coded link isn't so bad that I won't do it if I have to, but I will generally avoid links that would otherwise pique my interest if the poster went out of their way to make me have to go out of my way. ...That paragraph is full of so many crimes against prose that dead poets around the globe are rolling in their graves. We should harness this by hooking up power generators to their feet when they die, so that abominations like that paragraph will create enough energy to power a small household for a few hours.

That's up to the user to decide, there's tools for that if you don't want to transmit your referrer string, or you can copy pasta. What if I'd like to have referrers for whatever reason? I don't see why you should make that decision for us. I see that as much a threat to my liberty as telling someone merely where I was last.

You know, p_s, your name is listed on the Players page. I sure hope someone doesn't accidentally email your partially complete name to the International Association of Personal Information Buyers and Sellers. oops!

How does this compare to the amount of private information that one leaks simply by browsing the Web, period? With every page refresh you make, your IP address gets stored in about 20 separate logs, all of which can be used to trace your browsing habits anyway. Referrers, on the other hand, are ways for webmasters to tell what their audience is, so that they can modify their site to suit that audience better.
