Yes. However, I don't think you'd see many math majors get excited if suddenly every job in that particular area became unavaliable. Sure nothing is permanent and they can go back to school and major in something else, but yeah.

Yes, the same can be said (and with a lot more emphasis) for CS majors.

Peh, I've worked in construction, I'm terrible at it. Construction takes more coordination than I have. Construction takes more skill than you give credit for. And it's skill that I don't have and I can't quickly obtain.

I didn't mind it either, I just wasn't any good at it, and I got fired after a few months.

Have there been any posts seriously discussing the bill? It's hard to remember.

Basically there will be a Gulag situation in America. Bush can call any American citizen an enemy combatant and have them killed on the spot or sent off to prison to be tortured to death with no trial whatsoever. He can do this completely legal. And don't think the gestapo he sends at you won't kill or torture you. They hire only sadistic monsters for the job. I'm sure you've seen the pictures of what the American soldiers did to prisoners in the middle east. If there was ever a time to not criticize Bush, it's now. If you are a political enemy of his, or anybody for that matter, your life is in danger. He's not getting his hands on me, I plan to be dead or out of the country before he busts my door down. I'm an American, born and raised, I believe in the words of the constitution, and I'm scared to death of my government. My constitution no longer protects me. It's been voted out. Simply posting this probably puts me on a list. Americans seem to be blind to how dire the situation has become. They'd rather watch American Idol or some stupid show on tv than stop an American dictator from being born.

In all fairness, So You Think You Can Dance is a lot better than American Idol.

The bill doesn't target legal nationalized citizens. Therefore, not everyone is 'targeted' by this bill, only foreign migrants that aren't nationalized or haven't achieved citizenship. As I said before, this isn't the best thing ever, but peopel are definitely blowing it WAY out of proportion.

Reading over the text, (admittedly only in short bits at a time), I haven't seen anything that prevents it from being applied to naturalized, or even American-born citizens. If you have, I would thank you to direct me to the applicable clause(s).

I can't link to the page directly, since it has been moved, but I have a transcript of some stuff. "no court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider an application for a writ of habeas corpus filed by or on behalf of an alien detained by the United States who has been determined by the United States to have been properly detained as an enemy combatant or is awaiting such determination." Eugene R. Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice, added that: "What it means is that certain categories of people are going to be second-raters in our legal system. You can't sneeze at the fact that citizenship has got to mean something," Fidell said. "But if I were a green-card holder, thinking about the other pressures that are being brought to bear on green-card holders, it could make me pretty nervous."

That would tend to indicate that citizens retain the right of habeas corpus.

So much for freedom... Edit: The more I read about it, the more this bill scares the living hell out of me. Basically now the president can detain indefinitely anyone residing inside the U.S. (including U.S. citizens) that is declared an enemy (at least according to what I've read). And who has the authority to make the judgment call on who's an enemy and who's not? The president, of course. So you might as well say goodbye to freedom of speech... Theoretically speaking, it takes habeas corpus and throws it right out the window for everyone. I'm absolutely appalled that such extreme legislation wasn't killed at square one, nevertheless passed. Seriously, how long before this country becomes a dictatorship? Three, maybe four years? We all know Bush is going to try and weasel in a third term (remember, this was the same guy who did not receive the majority popular vote both in 2000 and in 2004), and who knows, we might soon see legislation banning the limit on the number of terms a president can serve. Seems like a slippery slope, yes. But part of that slippery slope has already become a reality.

Here's some entertaining and possibly informative propaganda. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=1274471951 There's not much content other than a few jabs at Bush, a short history of Habeas Corpus, and some quotes from people who didn't vote for this (ill-conceived, idiotic, useless) bill, but I still think it makes quite a few good points. Hopefully we can undo all the damage Bush caused once he's out.. but realistically it'll only get worse from here. At least I can't imagine this generation's lot getting too incredibly terrible, but I wouldn't want to live here in 50 or 100 years.

That's somewhat even scarier now that that brings up those bush quotes about newspapers; i hadn't put those two together yet. Anyway, very interesting. We can at least stay secure in our 3rd amendment right not to have our homes slept in by soldiers!

I love Keith Olbermann. He seems to be the only news personality who directly challenges the president and those who lie in news *ahem* specifically FOX news *ahem*

I meant as far as personalities on big news networks (CNN, CBS, MSNBC, etc.). But I love those guys too, especially Stephen Colbert.

I like Keith Olberman too, but, I think his credibility is only slightly higher of his foil Bill O'reilly. I enjoy his show a lot, but I don't trust everything I hear on his show. For real news you can't go wrong with the Daily Show :). On a less happy note: How did this bill get passed? Franklin said it best: "Those who would give up freedom for security deserve neither" or something to that effect. Go Democrats in 8 days !!
