Surprise! Hydlide.
Hydlide is a game that is generally considered to be awful. I enjoy it on some strange level, though, and I think it makes a reasonably entertaining TAS. Our hero, Jim, must save the princess, for some reason, and defeat the bad guy. She has been turned into 3 fairies. You must collect these 3 fairies and also the 3 gems to make the boss appear.
The main challenge with this movie is that walking in most environments drains Jim's HP. The only way to recover is to stand around on grass and wait. I have tried to spread the waiting out, so in stead of waiting once or twice for long periods, I wait many times for short periods.
This, combined with the way the bosses work, means I must take damage. There are also cases where damage is taken in order to manipulate enemies.
In this movie, enemeis are manipulated in four main ways:
  • Save/load: Used once, while getting the sword. This resets the location of the WISPs and saves me from having to wait around while they pass. This also seems to affect where the key is located in a later cave.
  • Timing: Waiting before entering another screen changes where the enemies start and how they move. This game only seems to accept input every 4 frames, and sometimes the enemy formation doesn't change every possible frame. Usually, I can just change the number of steps taken on a given screen, and still reach the goal at the same time, or extend my waiting to regenerate time, and simply have to wait less next time. Occasionally, killing an enemy on a different frame will force them to spawn elsewhere.
  • Spawn Points: If an enemy tries to spawn in the same space Jim is occupying, they will appear elswhere.
  • Jim's Position: If Jim at a certain position on the screen, the enemy may walk in a different direction.
Items Skipped:
  • Cross: Needed to make the vampire appear
  • Lamp: Kill the vampire to get the lamp. Dark caves are lit up.
  • Sheild: Supposedly increases defence. I didn't notice any difference.
To obtain the Ring, Jim must kill a certain number of enemeis, then the chest appears.
Wave is needed to kill the Wizards. This is why he must take the time to level up on HYPERs and EELs.
The DRAGON fight can be done at level 5. However, it takes roughly 3 minutes. Getting up to level 8 means the dragon can be killed in 2 hits.
I regret that the final boss could not be done any quicker, but facing him in attack mode always kills Jim in one hit. However, the medicine won from the previous boss refills Jim's HP after it reaches zero. Thus one "attack" hit can be delivered. Since I must wait at some point for my life to recover, I also gain the final level before this is done, to maximize damage.
Notes:
  • The sword is gotten, but not required. It is gotten so Jim can actually do damage and kill stuff at low levels.
  • At some point, Jim's life refills while he's moving. I think it's after he gets the Ring.
  • All stategies for this game were based off observations. I didn't look at the 'guts' of the game, because I'm not handy with that sort of thing.
About Attack/Defend mode: On attack mode, Jim does a lot more damage on attack mode, but still can damage enemeis a bit on defend mode. Likewise, Jim takes much mode damage on attack mode then on defense. This is why the dragon fight and the boss fight are the way they are, and why there is powerleveling before the dragon. At level 8, Jim can survive taking a hit in attack mode from the dragon. He cannot survive against the final boss unless he is on defense mode, even at full life. The item that refills Jim's HP can only be used once.

Hah. Well, it is a bit of a jab at the thread in the general forum, but maybe not totally inaccurate. I think the movie is entertaining, but admittedly probably only for someone who's familiar with the game :)

So this game does have an ending. I always thought it was just a frustrating nonsensical romp about a forest full of everything in the world that wants to kill you.

The soundtrack reminds me of the theme from Indiana Jones. Particularly the ending tune.

voting yes, although i'm sure this will get rejected for some inane reason. I've tried to play this game many times and never managed to get any sort of progress in it, so it's impressive and entertaining for me to see it beaten so quickly

I don't know... can a movie be published for kitsch? I kind of enjoyed it, but other than the save/load trick, it was on an ironic level. Voting yes, but I think "boring movie" should be included in the description so people know what they're getting into. And if it does go that way, the screenshot should probably be "YOU GET A MEDICINE!" around frame 21300. Extra points for Engrish, you know.

Ahaha, that was great. I especially like the part where he's leveling up in the dungeon for some odd reason. It's like he's killing people by playing tag. XD Will I watch this movie again? Probably not, but throughout its duration, I was thoroughly entertained. And I haven't even played the game before. Yes.

Hmmm, for odd reasons I quite like this movie for most parts. I feel that it is well done and entertaining and deserves a YES from me... though like NecroVMX i don't think the movie will get published. That aside, I enjoyed it, and I have to admit given the constraints of the (stupid and ridiculous) game, it was well TASed.

I've never played this game, and to be honest i probably won't. I think what Inzult has done is that he has made something out of this game. I enjoyed the first part of the movie enough to scrape a yes vote from me, however, i think that the repetitiveness of the final boss will hold this one back. One thing i liked was that the movie still appeared optimal even with all the stopping and starting, a very difficult feat, or perhaps that was just the voice in the back of my head saying "if Inzult could make this any faster or more optimized he would." In short, good job says me, but i'd be surprised if this gets published.

Wow, this game made a nice run, eventhough it doesn't seem like it. I was fairly entetained throughout the run, I'll add in one yes vote.

I agree with both quotes. It seems like they couldn't afford a real composer, so they used the chief's father who likes to play christmas carols on a keyboard, or something to that effect. It's a nice little movie. Nothing outshining, but I liked especially effectiveness on how you collected experience for the character. And for a programmer like me the game looks like a nice idea although nothing novel. However, the waits in this movie were way too long. 80% of the movie was waiting for hp refilling. I fastforwarded over them, and I was still bored. My vote is "no".

Thanks for the comments, guys (especially the positive ones—go Hydlide!). Some mixed reactions, which is sort of what I was expecting. I'm really quite hopeful that a run for this game is acceptable. The way the comments are coming, though, it may be a tough choice. And I agree about the music. I can't stand it.

I liked it. The movie wasn't too long, and the playthrough doesn't make it seem as bad as I've heard it being. My favorite part was in the dungeon near the end constantly dodging the monsters. Personally, it was more entertaining than a lot of other RPG based runs on the site

This was actually nice, despite the horrible game. The level-up sequence has to be the best i've seen for any RPG... like inverted arkanoid where the balls come from below and you catch them instantly with your paddle. Or something. Ehrm. The final room killed the run. Running around for how many minutes and doing nothing just to get health? Stupid. Skipping that, I quite liked it. It will get a weak yes just because I'm feeling so nice today.

Hydlide's one of those interesting cases where the game was already QUITE old when it got its North American release. Like, five years old. I think FCI published it in '89 'cause they wanted to follow Dragon Warrior and FF for some reason, even though neither of those games actually did all that well outside of Japan. It's actually quite a classic in Japan. There were times when bad music, crazy-simple combat, and ridiculous level grinding were the acceptable standard in JRPGs. =) Voted yes!

After having a lengthy explanation given to me in IRC, I've decided to vote Yes. I liked the game, but it kinda sucks when you had to add in so many waiting periods and whatnot in order to do this so quickly. Oh well. It would be excellent if the explanation of what happened in the game was expanded from brochure mode to novel mode: specifically, on the dragon fight and the final boss fight.

There were a lot of games like Ys back then, but none of them aged nearly as well. Which makes me wonder if there was ever any progress made on a PC Engine rerecording emulator. Ys needs a TAS badly. =(

Why not TAS the NES versions? Yeah, they're in Japanese, but we're not going to be reading the text anyway.

Victor made a lot of changes to the game for the Famicom version. The end result wasn't bad or anything, but it's not nearly as streamlined as the PCE version. The PCE version is really the only one with a balanced experience system. In the original game and all the other conversions, you have to do a LOT of level grinding, which isn't good for a TAS, needless to say. Plus the PCE version has that freakin' awesome soundtrack. =3
