Well, here is what happened with the bomb method.(I have not done the latest one) I got there maybe a second faster than last time but guards appeared like last time. I am hoping this time, the guards wont :)

I managed to bypass a navi text in MM using a very simalar method to what Pirate did. Unfortunatley the movie desynced and I'm now on desync number 25. I'm confident that a slightly better superslide in DM and a superslide past the second owl and the cancel trick in HC will get you to the moat early enough. I'm also sure that during the cancel switch that Link will be able to roll instead of running forward slightly.

You should be able to. Since that owl is a ground trigger. I take it your going all the way back to the first owl conversation. That must be painful, but then again you've done it before you should be able to do it again. Try and take damage from the leevers on the way to the Spirit Temple.

Most likely, since that is also a ground activation

the first owl being skippable is nice, but really why bother starting all the way back there but leave all the slowness in the deku tree (like for example landing on the useless switch at the bottom of the web). Besides, the first owl does not effect the time to get inside the castle, since beating dodongo's cavern resets the time to noon.

it can save like 15 seconds of text skipping. And by the way, nobody has helped me with posting a .m64 that can get past the 1st owl, so I just might have to start from there.

The switch wasn't useless, it helped with the infinite sword glitch. Although now you could do the web skip if you can figure out what's going on from the movie that was posted awhile back. And restarting from the owl would be cool anyway, since I, too, desynch there.

Well, if he did go back and redo the web skip, he could pretty much paste on everything he did from entering Ghoma's chamber to when he reaches the owl. It's not so bad. Most of it would be waiting for text to pass. I wonder, Guano, are you fast forwarding through unskippable cutscenes when you're recording?

So I take it that .m64's are finally hex-editable now?

I second the vote to redo to include the web skip

So... I'm starting to believe there are TWO desyncs... one after the owl and another at dodongo's cavern. Guanobowl, if anyone got past that owl, it was with a savestate. [lame] mupen has corrupted the movie file. I vote for restarting from there.

Depending on the weather outside, and if I'm wearing socks or not, I can get past the first owl. the random desyncs for me are the first owl, and the gerudo cucoo jump. but, usually if I rewind a few seconds (from a savestate made that playthrough, right before the desync) then sometimes it works. the only thign that never works when I'm using an opengl video plugin is the dodongo entrance.

If you're going back to the first owl then you would be as well redoing the deku tree with improvents. A potential trick would be to see if its possible to get hit by the gold skulltula into the uber water and swim in the deku shrub room using the vine glitch, unlikely but worth a shot.

I too am for redoing starting from deku tree to include to the faster skulita everyone talked about and the web skip.

Well you guys can suck a tree. I guess I'll redo. And I swear to god if any of you little minions on SDA or here find another trick after I get done with deku or Spirit, I will personally hunt you down and murder you with my bare hands. :)

....he's STARTING OVER?!? WoW. Score 500000 cool points for determination. But reguardless, how's the guard problems going to be fixed? Or is the route going to change?

My advice, keep multiple m64 files that finish at the end of a sequence or cinema so you know where to paste in the hex numbers if you have to redo something. edit: given the game isn't dependent on exact frame numbers.. then forget it.

I've restarted my run 8 times now... but since Z64 is a harder game to TAS and has been experiencing desynchs then yeah I give you a high five. I still think that restarting is difficult time wise and emotionally (I should know) but that the results are worth it.

Make sure the desnycing problem is fixed this time. I think there should be some more testing on the guards appearing. Like get sun's song and make it day time to see if they're not there just to check. Then try going in close to night time to see when they actually appear so you'll know for sure if you just need to make it faster and also you could tell exactly what time you have to make it in by. There still needs to be more testing if you can do forest as child without the game getting stuck. If you could do this, would that make a different optimal route where you don't have to race from dondigo's to the castle?

Yeah, but most of your restarts were because of improvements you discovered. GB is starting over because of a route error or desync. Quite a bit more emotional (imagine starting over, and doing the same thing w/out many known improvements), I would imagine. (Not saying that your DKC2 run isn't a great display). I admire your persistance GuanoBowl!

So the web skip is not considered an improvement? Could have fooled me then...
<Zurreco> if so called professional players cant adapt to every playing field, theyre obviously not that great
